Starting on Saturday our interviews with the Eurovision 2019 acts will be coming thick and fast with the official start of Eurovision pre-party season. But ahead of that we just had to catch up with one queen before the madness begins. She’s serving “Better Love” and we are here for it. It’s the one and only Katerine Duska from Greece.

The 29-year-old was recently in London and stopped by the tony neighbourhood of Fitzrovia to have a kiki with our William. They shared drinks and unpacked the stunning music video for her entry.

First things first: What’s been her reaction to the overwhelmingly positive reaction from Eurovision fans?

“It’s really moving,” she says. “I’m just really happy that people are liking the song so much. Their faith in me is a huge honour. I hope to do them justice.”

She’s not actively following the Eurovision betting odds, but she can’t escape the fact she’s among the Top 10 favourites.

“I try not to [look], but it’s kind of hard not to when you’re on Instagram and you get mentioned.”

The writing process took Katerine “a month or two”, during which she collaborated with Leon of Athens, a Greek indie artist who is based in London, and David Sneddon — a Scottish singer who has worked with Lana Del Rey, Mika and The Hurts.

“We got into the studio in February and we had to deliver the song in two weeks. We were working 16 hours per day on this track. We were losing it. We were like, ‘We need to listen to something else!'”

“In the beginning it was a chord progression from Leon of Athens and then I started working on the melodies and adding some chords. And then he came up with some melodies and David came up with some melodies. I mainly wrote the lyrics myself….’Better Love’ was David’s title.”

The notion of finding a better love is somewhat universal and applies to people across all backgrounds. She wasn’t targeting anyone in particularly, but rather unpacking her own experiences, which relate to men and women, young and old.

“To me this is a song that is my own personal thoughts on what social norms mean and what conventions mean. It’s really about not following that conventional path and finding that better love for yourself.”

“What’s true to you and fully embracing it with total honesty. Once you achieve that then you can establish that better love in your relationships with other people.”

“She was really working it with the veil. I freaked out. I messaged her right away.”

“[The director] doesn’t really like to talk about the inspiration behind her work because she doesn’t want to limit people’s imagination.”

She’s been inspired by a lot of Renaissance paintings. I’m sort of a motherly figure in this video, but not only. I don’t want to limit it.”

“I just love that it’s so empowering — it really has a strong female identity. Women are so multi-dimensional. Unfortunately in today’s pop world all these dimensions are not equally protected.”

“I hope people see that through the video….they all have their own character. They all play their own role.

Are you loving Katerine as much as we are? What surprised you most about this diva in the interview? Do you think she has a chance to win it all? Let us know down below!

The song may be good, but the music video just doesn’t leave me a chance to see this. Firstly, it looks like a commercial for disposable menstrual products. But that’s not a problem itself. The problem is too much pink, with no other colours. Well, actually there are red and some pastel colours, but after 30 seconds watching they all start to look like just another nuances of pink. It’s absolutely awful and makes my gorge rise. So I just can’t stand the music video, and because of this I may understimate the song. Sad.

I ‘m so damn proud of our girl! Not only a gifted artist, but also such a beautiful personality. We (Greeks) couldn’t ask for (or even dream ) anything more this year. Thank you Katerine

I appreciate when country doesn’t play safe and tries to bring something different to the table. Adding the fact that this year’s Greek entry is well produced and Katerine is charming they have my vote.

She’s just stunning. So eloquent and open, but at the same time down to earth (and boy she can sing!). Someone I would love to talk with.

I didn’t expect her to be so charming tbh. She has the song, she has the voice, now some extra very well deserved points for the charisma. Love her

I was pleasantly surprised to see how well-spoken she is. Her voice is beyond this world and the song is incredible and suits her voice well. Greece did a great job this year and deserves a great result.
