She’s the Ukrainian singer who almost made it to Eurovision 2019, but in the end she didn’t. Yet, rather than wallow in any sadness from events earlier this year, MARUV has continued full steam ahead and released the music video for her Vidbir 2019 winning entry “Siren Song”.
The video starts with MARUV walking down a hotel hallway. Wearing black from head to toe, and sporting a short slicked-back hairstyle, the singer instantly draws us in.
She eventually opens the door to her hotel room and lets us in to experience her world. And there’s no place we’d rather be!
MARUV – “Siren Song”
Once inside, we see MARUV and her four backing dancers werking every angle and position imaginable. Sat on a chair, laying on the bed, or in the bath, the Ukrainian star is fierce, sultry and sexy all tied together into one explosive package. Bang!
The moves incorporated into the music video are often adapted from those that we saw at the Vidbir semi-final and grand-final. They’ve taken almost everything that fans loved from her two performances and added in some stunning new visuals.
Unfortunately, the iconic ‘leg gun’ movement only makes a very brief appearance at the start of the first chorus.
MARUV is definitely a visual performer. Through her distinctive live performances at Vidbir she has earned a wave of new fans across Europe, and around the world. This continues into her music videos, where we get to experience her artistry in full.
With the music video for her previous single “Drunk Groove” recently hitting 100 million views, it’s clear that her star is far from burned out. She may not be going to Eurovision 2019, but we can’t wait to see what she has install for us next.
Volodymyr Ostapchuk Parodies MARUV
However, MARUV wasn’t the only one who released a music video for “Siren Song” today. Eurovision 2017 host Volodymyr Ostapchuk has uploaded his own parody video of the song.
The Ukrainian TV presenter has long been a fan of the track, even dancing to it in the kitchen when making food. In his take on the music video, he first comes across two men from the “Department of Fighting with Eurovision”. They persuade him to sign a contract without reading it first, and declare he must now represent Ukraine at Eurovision, but as a woman.
Volodymyr proceeds to change into the clothes provided for him, after making sure he’s cleaned himself up in the bath first. He works the “Siren Song” choreography to the best of his ability before adding in his own rap verse at the end.
MARUV and Eurovision
After experiencing some rather uncomfortable questions during Ukraine’s national final earlier this year, MARUV went on to secure the victory at Vidbir 2019 and seemed set to take “Siren Song” to Tel Aviv in May.
Unfortunately, MARUV later criticised the contract that state broadcaster UA:PBC imposed upon her. Talks between the two parties broke down, and the singer confirmed she would not be appearing on the Eurovision stage this year.
This eventually lead to Ukraine’s withdrawal from Eurovision 2019, after both the second and third placed acts from Vidbir refused to step in for MARUV.
However, we may still see the star performing at Eurovision in the future. During a recent show in Tel Aviv, MARUV told the crowd that she was interested in going to Eurovision in 2020.
She has previously stated that she would only represent Ukraine at the contest.
But, having also revealed that “within a day [of winning Vidbir] I received offers from three different countries to represent them”, is there still a chance that we’ll see MARUV waving a different flag on the Eurovision stage?
What do you think of MARUV’s music video for “Siren Song”? Are you still upset that she won’t be appearing on the Eurovision 2019 stage? Do you hope she’ll make it to Eurovision in the future? Let us know in the comments below!
I cry. This would have been such a great winner! Why Ukraine? WHY?
because she is pro-russian
That’s how I play chess too. In my underwear, manspreading. 😛
am I the only one who thinks Russia will pick MARUV to represent them next year, just to put their thumb in Ukraine’s eye
Yes, you are the only one!
Ukraine’s eye doesnt watch ESC as attentively as in previous years
out of all countries that could withdraw ukraine decided to ROB us of the epic experience that would’ve been seein maruv’s eurovision performance….. i don’t even particularly like siren song but whew her aesthetic is sumthin else
Maruv just decided to slap the Nut Button and film what every 1950’s, god-fearing man thought the lesbian agender was.
well her world is certainly messed up
I’m a simple man. I see MARUV and I press like.
This video got me pregnant and I’m a man XD
Honestly it’s such a waste the broadcaster said “Nope let’s not win eurovision and just withdraw”
She refused to sign the contract. And she didn’t want to actually go to Eurovision from the start.
So it’s only 50% their fault.
I’m getting Beyonce ”Haunted”, Madonna ”Justify my love” and American Horror Story:Hotel vibes, and I’m all for it! Amazing.
Is she the sexy bomb that Loboda sang about
her time has passed…
Her time hasn’t even started…
We are not worthy
I actually loved the 2017 hosts. The only really cringy one was Timur with his English. In 2018 the only good one was Filomena. The Catarina lady was the worst since 2005. She screamed out everything in a really bad accent.
Oh my
One thing bothers me. I like this song and don’t really care about visuals. But…
Do you remember Polish entry 2014? Literally everyone was enraged by “over-sexualized” women. Heck, even now people are saying that it was way too much. But noone have any problems with way more “provocative” staging from MARUV.
I’m just curious what’s the difference.
ESC fans are tolerant about s e x if it’s about L G B T.
The difference is that the universe brought by Maruv is much more coherent. It’s about siren, about attractive women but powerful because of their power of seduction. Moreover it sitcks to Maruv style. On the other hand, I found it a little too “basic” for Poland, but I don’t know about other Cleo’s other songs so it’s juste hypothesis
The girls from Poland are natural/organic, and are more happy than girls like Maruv.
BANG! Slay! BANG!
I DEMAND we have MARUV represent Ukraine next year. What a loss this was such a breath of fresh air this entry was…
total slayage realness honeeeeyyyy
