It has become an annual tradition for Germany to host its own Eurovision show in the run-up to the contest, with panelists ranking this year’s entries. And in the first songcheck the countries of the first half of the first semi-final as well as host country Israel received their scores. And after all scores were in, Cyprus‘ Tamta came out on top.

About the German songcheck

The songcheck has taken place every year since Lena’s triumph with “Satellite” at the 2010 contest. Hosted by Alina Stiegler and Stefan Spiegel, the hosts discuss the entries with a panel of experts, and also bring in comments from readers and viewers.

The 2018 programme sees some familiar faces as show guests. Germany’s commentator Peter Urban, radio host Thomas Mohr, Jan Feddersen, “Dr. Eurovision” Irving Wolther, Marcel Stober, Constantin “Consi” Zöller, singer and actor Isabel Varell, moderator and DJ Larissa Rieß, actress Kathrin Ingendoh, YouTuber Freshtorge and members of the Olivia Jones family join the two hosts. Besides, our very own William Lee Adams and Deban Aderimi are once again part of the programme, too.

A new feature of this year’s songcheck programme is the addition of a fan expert. Back in March, Paul Klur from Dortmund won the voting on their website and thus joins the other guests.

First show rankings

In what’s considered a close race, the panel’s scores somewhat mirror the bookies’ favourites. Cyprus’ Tamta leads the table with a score of 7.6 from the public, followed closely by Slovenia (7.4) and the Czech Republic (6.6). Host country Israel comes in a bit lower with a score of 4.9.

# Country Avg. Audience Stefan Alina
1 Cyprus 8.8 7.6 10 10
2 Slovenia 8 7.4 7 10
3 Czech Republic 7.8 6.6 8 10
4 Hungary 6.5 6.3 5 6
5 Poland 5.9 5.4 7 8
6 Belarus 5 5.2 3 3
7 Israel 4.7 4.9 5 5
8 Serbia 4.1 4.9 3 6
9 Finland 3.8 4.6 2 4
10 Montenegro 2.9 3.7 1 3

It’s really fun to watch. The “experts” should also give a score . I love listening to their comments including William and Deban 😉

It happens. Anyhow, the number you see there is only the difference between upvotes and downvotes, it doesn’t show how many upvotes and how many downvotes your comment gets. Plus, your self-esteem and confidence shouldn’t depend on upvotes/downvotes.

Unrelated, but Dina (Portugal 1992) has just passed away.
It’s always sad to loose someone from Eurovision community. Especially a person as energetic as Dina was.
RIP, thank you for your music.

It’s worth noting that everyone (the public and the hosts) gives points from 1 to 7 and then 8, 10 and 12 like at Eurovision and not just from 1 to 10. I’m happy that Sebi got so much appreciation. The chat was full of love for the song <3 The German songcheck shows are very enjoyable and I love Alina and Stefan, they're quite funny and likeable. But I'm scared of how Iceland and especially Portugal will be rated… It's not gonna be very good, Portugal's score will be a disaster.

There was this Swedish language Finnish songcheck programme with 3 panelists and they rated a few songs from semi 1 today. Two of these people gave Portugal 1/10 and the third one gave them 2/10. Estonia was the winner of that night.

Estonia???? Oh well… Also 1 or 2 for Portugal is a joke, but I guess everybody is entitled to their own opinion.

I’m not German but I wanna think Sebi would get 12 points from Germany if they were voting in this SF (ala Hungary 2013)

I mean… Everyone in the chat loved Sebi, we might give some Televoting points to Slovenia in the final.
