Earlier in the month, press reported that international pop icon Madonna would perform as an interval act at Eurovision 2019. While the new has been confirmed by the artist’s management, she hasn’t formally been confirmed by the EBU — but fans are still excited and are wondering what Madonna will perform.

And now we may be a little closer to getting an idea of what the material girl will take to the Tel Aviv stage. Madonna has released her new single “Medellín”, the first single from her upcoming album Madame X.

The song is a collaboration with the Colombian singer-songwriter Maluma and sees Madonna again incorporating Latin-American style into her music.

“Medellín” opens with a dreamy introduction, where Madonna sings about being under the influence and regressing back to her teenage years. In the first verse, Madge’s vocals deliberately have a digital effect to help conjure up the dreamlike state of the lyrics.

The chorus brings a stronger, sassier feeling, as Madonna intones “Ven conmigo, let’s take a trip/Ven conmigo, I’ll be so good for you”.

Madonna — always with an eye for trends — even puts some ASMR style into the song, with her whispered “one, two, cha-cha-cha”.

Maluma adds some masculine energy with his sensual rapped and sung parts. Sometimes he feels like a traditional duet partner, other times more a partner in crime, getting up to no good with Madonna.

While “Medellín” is rich with a Latin American flavour, we don’t know if this is what Madonna will take to Tel Aviv. The single is the first release of Madonna’s 14th album Madame X, due for release in June.

In a promo video released earlier in the week, Madonna spoke of the artistic vision behind her new album. Madame X is a lot of things:

“Madame X is a secret agent. Travelling around the world, changing identities, fighting for freedom, bringing light to dark places.

“Madame X is a dancer, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a mother, a child, a teacher, a nun, a singer, a saint, a whore and a spy in the house of love. I’m Madame X.”

Which raises the question — who will we see on stage in Tel Aviv? Which Madame X persona will rock the interval show? “Medellín” may be serving us Latin American fantasy, but will la madame deliver something different for Eurovision?

The Madame X album has a European connection — specially in Eurovision 2018 host city Lisbon, where Madonna has kept a home in recent years. In a statement she explained, “Lisbon is where my record was born. I found my tribe there and a magical world of incredible musicians that reinforced my belief that music across the world is truly all connected and is the soul of the universe.”

But in a month we’ll know what side of Madame X Madonna will be taking to Tel Aviv, for what is sure to be a memorable interval act.

What do you think of “Medellín”? What sort of performance would you like to see from Madonna at Eurovision? Share your thoughts below!

You guys are tripping, this song is way more original than Replay or She got me, it uses some “latin” cliches but is also fresh, I just don’t like the male voice much but I was expecting way worse! It’s a 6.5! :p

Omg that song is BAD… if she performs that song in ESC then I will NOT be happy…

Seriously? Taking a pill? And then a “zip” of what exactly? I hope this is not even remotely glorifying drug use. The guy has Carribean accent, Medellin is inland. What’s the story of Medellin anyway? This song is WEIRD.

I hope she’s not there. For me it would just take away from the actual show. Look at 2016. There was more hype about Justin Timberlake than anything else. And let’s be honest, love, love, peace, peace was better than him.

She used to be a pioneer, now she’s just jumping on the bandwagon, a bit too late even.

On first listen, I like it but don’t love it – it started well but has no chorus and went on way too long. It’s at least better than Give Me All Your Lovin’. I’ll give it another chance, but I hope the album is better.

“Discúlpame mi amor, sé que eres Madonna, pero te voy a demostrar que este perro te enamora”. This is beyond pathetic.
Sorry, Madonna, I respect you for what you have achieved and the influence you once had, but if this single is the best you have to offer now you could have better left Madame X unreleased
