Pablo: Dude. Italy is coming with fire, cuz this is one of the top tracks of this year, fact. There is this grit and trap-inspired style to Mahmood’s singing that makes the song arresting. Even with this being the most urban and youth-oriented Italy has gotten in the contest, it still possesses that Italian high-end mouthfeel that makes “Soldi” cross all boundaries. The clapping in the chorus is going to be the stadium moment of the year, and the Arabic lines makes it feel personal to both Mahmood and at the same time, daring for Italy. They are gunning for the crown, and they could just get it.

Antranig: Mahmood possesses an instantaneous likability and that immediacy bodes well for “Soldi” at Eurovision. The opening bars capture your attention before Mahmood even starts singing. The “come va” hook, paired with a strong beat, is insanely catchy, even for a non-Italian speaker. Add in the clap sections in the chorus and this is so memorable. Mahmood is undoubtedly capable of another magnificent result for Italy.

Kristin: It took some time for “Soldi” to get under my skin. At first it was hardly a bleep on my radar, but after some more listening sessions, I suddenly found myself in the kitchen, chanting the chorus from the top of my lungs, whilst baking a huge dose of Biscotti which I intend to send Mahmood. Italy might just win this year, for “Soldi” is immensely catching, the clapping is perfect for doing a little flash mob on the dance floor at Euroclub, and Mahmood himself is simply mesmerising. Italy has a slam dunk again! Grazie mille.

Robyn: It’s “Soldi” and everything is good. Mahmood deftly mixes R&B and hip hop styles, with hints of Italian magic. The audience-friendly clap-along is a brilliant hook, but there a hidden delights, like when the soaring strings of the pre-chorus come crashing down into the darker chorus. Best of all, “Soldi” is personal. Mahmood has put himself into the song, far removed from a cynically written “Eurovision song”. If Italy can get the staging right (and they don’t always manage this) Soldi could be a very strong contender for Italy’s first Eurovision win in almost 30 years.

Ron: This is probably one of the most modern songs this year. With great beats and a catchy chorus (and clap-clap) it’s not a surprise it became one of this year’s favourites. The first time I heard it was at the national final performance in Sanremo. Back then I didn’t really feel the song that much and I must say there is a gap between the studio version and the live performance. It’s not that Mahmood is a bad singer, but live the power of this song is getting a bit lost. Yet, it is one of the big hits of Eurovision 2019, no doubt.

William: Musically, linguistically, emotionally — there is nothing else like this at Eurovision. Mahmood takes us on a proper journey. There’s heartache and sorrow and a bit of anger. But there’s also a strange sense of joy and the sense of a young man on the move. Classical but contemporary, structured yet structureless, this is a unique song with a very big heart. It deserves to do well.

By far Italy’s best and modern entry at ESC. Fingers crossed they finally win!
The best song in the competition. Only apparently just a catchy song, is incredibly sophisticated in structure, it’s heart and brain together, tinged with bit of anger yet joyous. It takes more than one listen to get all the subtleties&charms. A daring artist and great performer, the chance for Eurovision to give the audience a true star.
On February 5 I listened for the first time this song and I immediately said that he would win Sanremo.. Now I hope that a dream will come true, but then we’ll talk about it on May 19..I will tell you if it is realized ?
Soldi is the perfect winning ESC entry! The verses start telling you a story that takes you to that bridge with the piano section. This part specially creates an expectation that bursts in the chorus with that indispensable “clap-clap” -an element that is not cheesy at all but has been carefully placed at the right moment. This is my no. 1 this year out of all 41 songs. I love ‘Soldi’ so much. it grips you and moves you right from the first listen. The clap is infectious and something that you will remember. This is potentially the best entry Italy has ever sent to ESC. This is one of 3 songs I get winners vibes from and hope that it does amazingly well on Saturday (Sunday for me). My score is 10/10. This song immediately stood out to me at San Remo for being totally different-sounding and edgy, yet it took the jury a while to warm up to it. Once they did, the public was controversially overruled, and sorry to Italy, but thank goodness Rai decided to go with Mahmood and “Soldi”. This is memorable, artistic, technically challenging and emotional, all at the same time. It would be ironic if a song that “doesn’t really sound Italian” were to win the ESC for Italy. Like you, I’m worried the public, in particular the persons who will listen to Soldi for the first time the 18th of may, might not understand the song and its deepness; for Italy it would have been better to perform Soldi during two nights, not just in the Final…
About sanremo’s jury, instead, the President of the jury after the end of Sanremo said they loved and voted Soldi as the best song of the Festival since the first night.

At the beginning of the Festival, being almost unknown and with a song that it’s the contrary of Sanremo festival and italian song tradition, he said he could arrive even last … but he decided to dare and to go to sanremo with Soldi and not with other more traditional song
Every single year I adore Italian entries and this year is no exception! The song is well crafted, with catchy and haunting melody, easy to sing and play with (soldi *clap,clap*), in addition to that Mahmood is really a charming and charismatic guy with emotional baggage from the past that he delivers on stage in a great style. I wish him all the best, go and snatch the trophy! 🙂

I’ll put my seemingly shocking opinion out there – I don’t think that Arcade will top this poll. It should, but it won’t. Arcade is a beautiful song and most Wiwi Jurors will probably respect that. The score will be high, maybe 8.00 or even 8.50. However, there will probably be those who will call it ”another boring ballad” and I doubt the score will exceed 8.80. Wiwi Jurors have a tendency (as a group, not each individual) to rate ”bops” higher than slow songs of the same quality. For example, an amazing bop will be 8.25, an amazing ballad… Read more »
Unfortunately, I have that same feeling, Colin. Most scores will be 10’s and 9.5’s, but there will probably be a few 3’s or 4’s that will bring the score down.

I’m still afraid that The Netherlands will win though because so many people seem to like it and it seems to have an appeal which I can partly get, but not to the same extent as others. I think Soldi deserves to win because it is super original, magnificently sung and it is in Italian. To me, countries that have the courage to send songs in their own language should be rewarded in one way or another
I am Italian, but honestly this year there are a lot of good songs. I wouldn’t get mad if Slovenia, Portugal, Netherlands, Iceland win over Italy (actually I will be very happy for them), even though I hope for Mahmood.
We shouldn’t be so drastic: it’s a competition, nothing more.
Then… what do we do with the UK and Ireland? Reward them or punish them?
Also, let’s be honest. Italian, French, Spanish, Portugese… are nice languages that allow making songs that are pleasant to listen to, but other languages (Finnish, Dutch…) have some quite uncomfortable sounds in it and are much harder to listen to. A song just has to be a good song, no matter in which language it is written
I think someone suggested a while ago that some spots be reserved for English songs (5 for example in each semi-final) The first 5 English songs would go to the final and then the other spots would be reserved for non-English entries. I don’t think it’ll ever happen, but to me Eurovision should not be the Badlywrittenkindofenglishsong contest.
I’m sorry but I have to fully disagree. That system would not make any sense. There have been wonderful entries in English and pure trash songs in other languages and viceversa.
You have the right to disagree and I respect the fact that you have a different opinion. To me, however, sending songs in English without adding a local twist (be it instrumental, or with the content of the lyrics) kind of defeats the purpose of Eurovision. I think an example of this could be the song Sister this year which was meant to be taken as a Swiss entry first and ended up being performed by Germany. I was so happy when Mahmood won Sanremo as it was my favourite by farrrr! Love Soldi and I don’t have anything bad to say about it I mean it’s amazing and one of the best Italian entries of all time in my opinion! 9.5/10

Italy was very good last year. Good song, good lyrics and impecable interpretation by two tremendous singers. Thankfully ppl at home understood that. This year Mahmood’s song is one of the weakest entries I have known from Italy with the most annoying chorus ever. Musically: 4/10, performance-wise we’ll see how it goes, but if he does the same as in Sanremo… Well… Expectations must be kept low

If only Italy had better staging. I was shocked by the performance and just can’t watch it again. I.don’t.understand.what.happened. It was perfect in San Remo. It was not the juries fault imo, they watched the same show as the rest of us.
The staging was really unfortunate but it still deserved to win in 2017, it was the best song by far together with Azerbaijan.
It was my favorite to win. I didn’t like any of the top 5 that year.
I don’t think the people gave occidentalis karma more points than the juries either. To win in eurovision the whole package has to work or it has to be a very weak year. For Occidentalis karma both the performance he delivered on stage and the staging did not work. He looked really scared and lost on the stage. To win Mahmoud have to give a fantastic and credible performance, have a staging that fits the song as well as a really god song. If he delivers these three magics he will win.
The first year Italy came back it was the juries – not the people voting that made them reach second place. Each year is different.
Indeed, good point. I think Italy has yet to find the perfect formula that pleases both the jury and the public. Hopefully this year would be it, but the competition is very fierce and the fact that Italy sings always in Italian (which I applaud) is always a handicap, unfortunately…

Occidentali’s Karma did finish a very respectable 6th but would have finished higher if the staging had been similar to Sanremo and concentrated on Francesco – it was just too ‘busy’. The staging of Francesca Michielin’s song the previous year was just bizarre and cost her several placings. Italy 2016 and 2017 still remain my favourites of both years – no disrespect to Salvador who was a disserved winner on the night. Looking forward to some new music from Francesco very soon!
This entry has it all for winning – song, singer, lyrics, controversy, charisma, all is here! Let’s hope for equally impactful staging and live performance in May!

Well two important things needs to be proved to say that – a stellar performance ( some seams lost on Eurovision stage) and a really good staging. However good luck! Italy has a good chance. We will see how Mahmoud delivers!
This is an excellent entry, my personal second place. It starts with a bang, Mahmoud brings so much sass, and it has several memorable hooks whether you understand the language or not. It feels fresh and modern and unlike anything else in the competition. My only concern is that I first heard this when watching the video, which is intoxicating and vibrant, immediately drawing you in. Will this capture people within 3 minutes on a stage in Tel Aviv? Only time will tell. But Mahmoud, and Italy, you can be very proud indeed.
For me this song has the full package. The melodic strtucture is wonderfully catchy without sounding banal and full of subtleties and hooks. His voice, although maybe not the best one this year, suits the song perfectly paying hommage to the italian heritage but giving it a modern and contemporay twist. I am in love with the dry infectuous beat that makes this song so modern, street credible and so catchy at the same time. As for the original comment, pretentious people are usually the ones who only watch the Grand Final without being aware of Eurovision mechanics (there are many of them). Generally though, real Italian eurofans are calm and don’t take anything for granted, especially after Gabbani’s curse in 2017.

In the 7 years that I have been watching Eurovision (since 2013), Italy has NEVER sent a trainwreck! The problem for them is the way they stage the performances. Too often they never use their excellent videos as a benchmark for what to put on stage.
They should go full theater with this one, the way Hungary 2014 and 2017 did theirs. Put a story on stage, to go with the lyrics.
As of now, Mahmood is my #1. I’ve got Duncan at #2. This could be a battle-royale if they stage it right.

As usual, Italy serving quality with special attention to the lyrics. Its message about how money and abandonment affect families can be relatable to many, with or without a similar cultural background to Mahmood. The current and radiofriendly beat is accompanied by symphonic elements, which explains how something so urban blended so well with an orchestra in Sanremo. The hook is catchy and it’s almost irresistible not to clap along. The arab flavor from its bridge is endearing. Mahmood’s voice is distinctive, his delivery is firm but not aggressive. “Soldi” would be a great winner. 9.5/10

The song is good. The singer is likable . His live vocals have gotten better after Sanremo’s performance which was not very good. The Sanremo staging wouldn’t work on ESC. I don’t like the verses of the song though and seems that this is the part where Alessandro is the most off vocally. For some reason I’ve not clicked with the song as much as most fans have. A 7/10.
Unfortunately I don’t see this being a huge jury favorite again. He has too much of a smoker’s voice.

Italy is very quickly becoming one of my favorite Eurovision nations since they’re long awaited return to Eurovision. They have given us Marco Mengioni, Nina Zilli, Francesco Gabbani and now they have given us Mahmood. Please please please people vote for Italy. They really deserve it. I love “soldi” so much since the very first time. It is one of only 3 countries that I want to win this year (Netherlands and Portugal being the other two). ‘Soldi’ is a catchy, contemporary rap while being typically Italian. I did vote for Italy in 2017 and 2018. Not this year. Mahmood is not at the same level as the previous contestants in my opinion. He is good, but not good enough, especially this year where we have other superior artists/musicians.
If you don’t like the song or the voice of Mahmood, no problem, the first is Alessandro (mahmood) who says tastes are tastes and even more with a song so unique and particular like Soldi is.
But talking about superior artists/musicians… listen to the songs of the album “Gioventù bruciata”, he is great, maybe not your style or sound, but he’s really a great artist, a pure talent.

Of course, live is very important. To be honest, I loved Francesco but the live show disappointed me… while I absolutely fell in love with Amar pelos dois at the very first moment I saw it in the Semifinals… so I love Mahmood, but who knows what will happen?
Current and emotional, the raspy voice and the beat really grabs you. Mahmood has the song, the voice, the look and the story; everything. If Italy stages it cleverly we have top 1-5 material. I wouldn’t mind to have Italy winning this year tbh. The only negative aspect I need to point out is that it feels longer that it actually is. I wonder if people would be able to understand the message. That will be a key point to grab those televotes. In london or in sanremo he didn’mess any note: listen to the exhibitions, read the comments of people who were there; a lot of eurovision fan channels considered Soldi the best performance in London so I don’t know what you are saying…
He missed a lot of notes in his Sanremo performance and his voice has a smoker’s tonality , that’s what I mean when I say his vocals aren’t the best
I can get why some people don’t like his voice (I love it) but he was very consistent during Sanremo. In the first evening he was especially impressive, raising the energy in the room even if he was the last performer of an endless night.
I had heard the studio version first , then the Sanremo performance which was completely off compared to the studio version. Hearing the live first would have had a different impression maybe ……
You should compare the Sanremo and LEP performances and see the difference clearly
They should sound similar though

Oh man, Italy. I don’t even know where to start. This entry works on so many levels – crazy catchy hit, personal story, visual feast, fascinating fusion of Italian, Arabic, urban, rap and R&B influences. It just doesn’t match any categories, it’s a category of its own – a work of an excellent, mature artist bringing something never seen before at Eurovision to this year’s edition. And, boy that *clap* *clap* moment with the whole arena joining him is gonna be iconic! 9/10
Italy deserves to win this year more than in any other year since they came back. Europe, PLEASE, let him do well
