Red and green: The colours of the Portuguese flag.
And today they formed the predominant theme of Portugal’s first rehearsal at Eurovision 2019.
Conan Osíris has dispensed with his golden beard, instead embracing Portugal’s national colours, in a green satin look with the red rose backdrop we’re familiar with.
At times the stage felt almost too dark, with nothing to soften the contrast between the greens and the reds in the staging.
The backing dancer has the same choreography as before, and includes the death drop, but Conan did not perform his moves in every run through.
Vocally this hit all the right notes, with no issues there, but the overall package needs work.
Things have been reined in since Festival da Cancao which makes it feels less incongruous.
However it feels as though the approach to cutting elements from the national final has been a little heavy-handed.
The final run through featured new camera angles which have helped, but more lighting in second rehearsals will help elevate this.
Sonically well put together, but the performance needs a bit more work. But that after all is what first rehearsals for: Testing things out and setting a benchmark to perfect from.
