Sarah McTernan had her first rehearsal at Eurovision 2019 today. The singer from Ireland dazzled us with a performance set in a fifties diner. After her rehearsal, Sarah caught up with our William and Deban for an interview. They discussed the theme of the performance and we even met Sarah’s backing dancers.

Sarah McTernan — Interview

Sarah describes the scene of her stage show as a diner featuring a couple of girls having some girl talk. Sarah talks about practising with a makeshift prop in the buildup to Eurovision. It’s quite a different proposition using the real thing — the counter and seats are larger and grander.

The diner counter becomes a bed as Sarah lays on top and sings “I’m all alone tonight, wishing you were laying by my side”. This isn’t a girl passed out at the bar — she’s longing for her man and dreaming of him as she lays there. The imagery is sharp and on point as Sarah seamlessly completes the transition. She describes getting on the bar as the most difficult part of the performance, trying to do so in an elegant manner.

We also met the two girls part of Sarah’s squad. There is a lot of Irish blonde realness on stage and the relationship has been quite organic. The girls are good friends on and off the stage, bolstering the authenticity of the final product.

Sarah McTernan also spoke about her two and a half year-old daughter and how she is starting to sing and perform. She is keeping a scrapbook for her daughter and she’ll know about this Eurovision experience in due course.

Ireland have a vision and their first rehearsal saw it come to fruition. What do you think of Sarah McTernan’s first rehearsal in Tel Aviv? Are you seeing “22” in the grand final? Let us know in the comments below.

pity it wont qualify -if the song made no sense it would have a better chance like most of the other entries.

She is a beautiful, smart young lady, I like her song but I don’t like the staging from what I’ve seen so far.

Oh, I bet most people think the opposite. I don’t like the song but I like what I saw on stage today. Still it won’t save it from NQ.

She has such a great voice. I really like the husky sound. I hope this qualifies.
