Croatia are our guardian angels at Eurovision 2019. Roko has taken his Dora staging and amplified it. The project is the brainchild of Eurovision 2017 participant Jacques Houdek and we had the opportunity to catch up with both Roko and Jacques following their first rehearsal.
Roko & Jacques Houdek interview
Jacques talks about Roko’s undeniable talent. He says Roko’s talent is “out of this world” and knew from the beginning that Roko was “going to go places”. He instantly pictured Roko on the Eurovision stage and was determined to make that vision a reality.
Roko said that they worked on the staging for the last few months and has two guardian angels with him. He feels like he is being crowned as they come and put his wings on. They are giving him his hope back because he didn’t give up on the world. The message is poetic and the imagery is beautiful, with Roko healing the world with his voice. Roko says the wings give him strength and they’re not too heavy to wear.
Jacques said they wanted to create a classic Eurovision throwback song, playing to Roko’s strengths. Roko always goes for dramatic power ballads with a lot of theatricality and so Jacques gave him a song to match.
Jacques describes “The Dream” as a song about love but not a love song. It’s about bringing the love back to the world and realising that dream. Jacques believes the message is something everyone can relate to.
Roko is all about dedicating his life to music according to Jacques. Jacques is full of praise for Roko and we can’t help but agree. Roko even dazzled us with a rendition of “Rise Like a Phoenix” at the end of the interview.
