eShe blew us away in Australia’s second rehearsal at Eurovision 2019.
And now Kate Miller-Heidke has pressed Australia‘s advantage in the betting odds.* Australia’s odds to win Semi-Final 1 continue to shorten.
Four days ago Australia’s odds were as long as 10/1, but today Bet 365 ranks her as short as 4/1. She’s in the blue at several bookmakers, which suggests they back “Zero Gravity” as a credible candidate to win Semi-Final 1.
Australia aside other acts appear to be moving in the opposite direction. They’re either dropping down the odds to win Semi-Final 1 or drifting at bookmakers.
Cyprus and Iceland are both in the red at a spread of bookmakers.
Cyprus’ Tamta suffered vocal mishaps in her second rehearsal due to in-ears problems. Those appear to have harmed bookmaker confidence in “Replay”. Bookmakers including Betfair have her odds to win as high as 7/2.
Likewise Iceland’s Hatari appear to be in trouble. They’ve drifted as high as 11/2 at PaddyPower. Their stageshow is not for everyone, but the fact they aren’t shortening suggests they’ve failed to win people over.
Portugal‘s Conan Osiris is the major casualty of the day. In some cases his odds have doubled in the space of four days. On May 4 Portugal was as low as 9/1. You can now find Portugal as high as 22/1 at RedZone. He’s now dropped to seventh in the odds.
It should be noted these are the odds to win Semi-Final 1, not the odds to qualify.
Semi-Final 1 Odds To Qualify
The odds to qualify look a little different.
Bookmaker William Hill* suggests these ten countries will make the cut:
Cyprus, Greece, Iceland, Czech Republic, Australia, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Belgium and Estonia.
What do you make of the odds? Do you think Greece will win? And who are your qualifiers?

Portugal it’s the best entry and is seems in some way boycott because seems someone don’t want it wins twice. The more amasing song diferente and in own language. Not more than the same. If I they not qualify or being well classified in final i never will again fallows eurovision. How people than votes Israel last year don’t vote for Portugal this year? It’s so strange. After all I don’t believe anymore in diversity in this contest. Regards and good luck for all.
Ya seems something is curbing Portugal… They don’t want to talk to much about this entry wich is also think is the Best this year
Totally agree with you. He is definitely one of the best this year and they way he is being treated is so disrespectful ! Every artist deserves RESPECT .
Today is my birthday but i want to give a present to all Conan fans… Just Amazing!

For me, semi 1 is by far the more interesting show and most of my favourites will perform on Tuesday. What’s not to love about Australia this year, I really can’t understand the negativity towards this song. I adore Iceland, and they are delivering the goods, although I’m a little disappointed that there appears to be little that is new in their presentation. Georgia are the real surprise here. I liked the song but didn’t give it much of a chance to qualify, but this dramatic presentation may well knock our a few favourites. Fingers crossed for Slovenia, Belgium and… Read more »
Portugal are wearing PS colours (cannot fully write it because my comment gets blocked): green outfits, “praying-mantis praying for revolution and change” according to Conan’s own words; red background, black and white sneakers… only a blind man cannot see.
Honestly Conan has already won. Just for this fact, he will be remembered in Eurovision history for years to come, even if he comes last.
No matter how good the staging is, if you don’t like the song you will NOT vote for it.
She has got a great voice, no doubt. But when I first saw the Australian performance on their NF I thought the whole pack was a bit weird and I still think ths same.
90% of people watch it for the first time. So the national final performance won’t matter much.
Australia’s song is a mess. Really awful. Nice staging doesn’t make it any better. Portugal is just.. weird.. My winner of SF 1 is Greece.
The staging will only boost Australia’s chance of qualifying but I’m not sure about winning. The staging alone does not make it a winning package.
But is AUS, so on the juries alone will do well.
OK, Australia had a great voice, but cirque du soleil scheduled on June 20
Don’t mind me. Just yawning at your overused comment.
Well, we yawn at Australia’s entry. Just a crappy song. Good for a pee break
The same goes for the Portuguese entry…
But I thought we all agreed that Serhat’s winning this.
At least to qualify
Serbia is ?
my body is not ready for mahmood tomorrow, i can’t cope
welp
Is anybody else disappointed with the camera angles in general? I still haven’t seen any cohesive performance (yes even in 40 secs which are meant to be the best of the 3min normally). Could this be cause of the small stadium etc? It definitely though helps countries like AUS or Malta that have opted for the “video-clip” equivalence.
I was looking for that comment cause it’s true.
I’ve noticed a lot of shots that were either too far-away or started at the back and slowly went forwards. They are bad and make the stage look smaller than it actually is, but I’ve also noticed that some of these shots focus a lot on the audience, but because there’s no audience in the rehearsals, it may look disappointing. I think it’s wiser to wait until we see the full performance.
I agree. I watched through those clips, and the only ones that had good camera angles were Slovenia, Australia, Iceland and to some extent Estonia. Seriously, why does the camera have to zoom out that far?
Conan will surprise us all. Mark my words.
He already did. He is wearing PS colours (cannot write otherwise my comment is not approved).
I don’t get the Australia staging. Maybe I will understand the performance when it’s full.
I have the same issues I had with Sweden 2018 stage show. People can’t see the stage. It doesn’t feel as a live performance. It feels cold.
I can respect this — it will not really be live-impressioning at first sight, for some audiences, eventhough I love that performance
Considering how bad a lot of the angles are for some countries this approach might benefit AUS. However, I think I prefer Malta’s approach where they stage it as a video but in the end they show the stadium and the crowd and link the two.
I think people always prefer live performances and emotions rather than “video stagings” which come across like fake for them.
I do agree angles are pretty bad this year based on what we see today.
I think we can all argue till the cows come come home about who might win this semi final, but the truth is that the top three positions on May 18th are coming from SF2 and Italy. This is a very weak semi musically. You can dress all these weaknesses up all you want with glitzy staging, but the public will not be fooled. Who remembers Salvador’s “staging”? It’s a song contest. Nothing in SF1 deserves to win from the musical point of view.
You mean, that pine forest and a field of headphone lights?
It really doesn’t figure among the factors that won in 2017. Among the zillions I speak to about his victory they mention him and his song. Deal done.
It actually does. In making the decision to not have staging, the juries and audience were forced to judge Salvador on the song and his performance. Genius move on the part of Portugal, as many acts looked bad trying to fill that huge stage in Kiev.
My point exactly… No staging was “good staging”
Most of SF1’s songs are more niche, so whether you see it from a commercial or artistic point of view, there will be differences. For me, some songs are worthy for winning : AUS (yeah, I think it’s a great song), SLO, GRE, SER. And HUN.
How about he looking he is about to die? His humanitarian stands ?
Oh Salvador had staging. Him sitting in front of piano with forest background was staging. No one in ESC has no staging.
However that was only part of the winning factor. The fact that every commentator mentioned he had heart failure probably added some too. Plus it was a decent song
He was alone on the satellite stage with largely out of focus soft forestry imagery behind him at some distance. There was no piano. He was surrounded by a sea of mobile phone lights, an effect that the Dutch are said to be keen on trying to replicate for Duncan Laurence. Their problem is that he is on the main stage and not so proximate to the audience on a satellite extension.
Australia’s, Portugal’s and Belarus’ full rehearsals today have been PUBLISHED on YT 6 hours by someone who was obviously there. That is NOT OK.
Israel is deliberating sabotaging Portugal for what Salvador said about Netta and the boycott rumors and to protect the already chosen winner aka snoozy Dullcan. They have not execute the changes that were asked by the delegation after the first rehearsal.
Vote Sergey in the final to stop their evil plan.
Portugal also destroyed Greece’s performance last year and Denmark faced great obtacles by the hosters. Karma is a b*tch.
Portugal destroyed you say … so why is the whole Swedish Melodifestivalen there the whole dam time?
there was no problem with Denmark.
Only the snow they used in the first rehearsal was not ok…whats wrong with that?
Thats precisely what rehearsal are made for. Portugal was a good host however they were killed on stage in 2005
Haha, nice try. Portugal’s entry isn’t artistic; just weird. And not the good kind of weird. And Sergey is a snooze-fest.
lots of Teddies around here lately mkay
Hating on Duncan for whatever personal bad taste in music you are proud to own cannot be used to justify this whole childish game happening against Conan … and to be honest … i smell the influence of Christer Bjorkmann in all of this.
Mate you should see all the phone snippets for a certain country . Ehm … sounds like Austria but has a few more letters . If people with smart phones are able to get snippets of rehearsal one they are going to record and show on line rehearsal two . Don’t panic . Don’t forget the Jury show is what the acts are being judged on not their rehearsals .People are making snap judgements over who will win from the rehearsals because – A. They want their country to win B. They are a bunch of miserable bastards and they… Read more »

BREAKING NEWS from the BBC tonight: “Australia is an unlikely participant in the Eurovision Song Contest. ON SATURDAY, Kate Miller-Heidke will perform as the country’s first publicly chosen contestant and as Gary Nunn writes, she’s bringing an unusual subject to the stage.”

Thanks
You’re welcome. I think it’s from the stand-in thing. The stage looks like the stage in TA. The first one has that script or whatever that’s called from a video recording. But it’s not a staging that brings new elements, as Miki said. #whatever
Oooh my lucky day 2.0
Well, they paid the designer more than they paid for staging the past three years total.
This is song contest not circus contest .Australia bring a nice circus act but a horrible song.not my vote
If you think Zero Gravity is a horrible song, you need your ears checked.
Why do people think everybody must have the same taste in music, just because somebody doesnt like a song doesnt mean they need their ears checked it just means they like different kinds of music. It would be a very boring world if everybody liked the same stuff and there would be no reason to have a song contest. I personally dont like the song either, i will go and have my ears checked tomorrow!!! lol
Of course you are right, pooky. Everyone can have a different taste and that’s totally fine. But there is a huge difference between saying “Australia brings a horrible song” (statement) and saying “I don’t like Australia’s song” (legit and respectful opinion)
Yes i agree, there is a right and wrong way to express your feelings i just dont like the fact that people who like one particular song think everyone else who doesnt like it must have bad taste or be deaf.
And you need to truly understand what real operatic singing is all about … not a Katy Perry album sung by Andrea Bocelli in your own bubble world…
Sadly this circus has been around and been very vocal since the turn of the century … and all it took was a transsexual from Israel to make the contest less about music and more about everything else … and you know too many people love it that way for nearly 20 years…too late to get back to what it should be …
Must be one of those people who hate unusual song structures with different movements like Bohemiam Rhapsody for example.
I think i’ve already watched kate’s second rehearsal clip around twenty times now. Can’t wait to see it next tuesday! Might vote for her in the grand final.
Here is my assessment: Cyprus, Greece, Iceland , Australia and Serbia are through. GAME OVER. Montenegro is out. Also game over. That gives us 5 spots remaining, and 11 countries vying for them. Not more than 3-4 consercutive countries qualify, so lets look at this in blocks. Block 1: Finland-Poland-Slovenia-Czech rep-Hungary.- Belarus. I think Finland is most likely out, and Czech boys are most likely in, so the question is… who qualifies from (Poland Slovenia- Hungary- Belarus). My gut feeling says Slovenia and Belarus at this point. Block 2: Belgium-Georgia-Estonia-Portugal- San Marino. I think Georgia is unlikely, and as much… Read more »
I never thought I would say this but Georgia is my favorite in this semifinal. Australia has great staging, great singer but the song is meh. Cyprus live sounds terrible and I am not surprised Portugal dropped.
Hope Portugal goes back to their usual classy, elegant and high-quality songs next year.
high quality?! LOL
You cant expect Fuego or Toy to own any kind of “quality” … bubble gums lose sugar way to fast honey
Who said they’re high quality?
That rarely made gave them any favours you do knoe that right? Portugal is the anti-Sweden the land of the anti-pop … and mind set clashes current Eurovision circus and firework madness.
“current Eurovision circus and firework madness”… I don’t think we are watching the same Eurovision…
What is Australia, ICeland entry about if not circus?
The answer is simple: art, emotion and two very important messages.
They won’t. They are wearing PS colours: green outfits, red background, black and white sneakers. Please, only a blind-man cannot see.
I feel like either camera cuts are hidden until Tuesday or the crew is lazy people, last year I noticed it too. Nonetheless, Australia blew me away with their stellar performance, you hit that pole gurl! Georgia did also a good job, Oto’s vocal ability is amazing! This semifinal seems more diverse and daring song-wise and language-wise. No matter who wins, I’m gonna enjoy it for sure!
11/2 for Iceland is pretty astonishing odds – it translates as 5.5/1 – not sure we need to worry about them missing the final
Kate you are doing an amazing job. I wish the best for you and our Aussie friends. Staging is beautiful and vocals are amazing. I said it so haters can downvote all you want but this is an act to watch out for.
Australia is amazing! LOVEEEEE it! YOU HAVE MY VOTE!
Plus, in a concert was recorded Conan saying that and I paraphrase “Roger Waters talked ahead of time”.
This all to say that I am very proud of Conan even if they come last. 🙂
The winner of the day for me is Georgia. The loser of the day is Cyprus .
My assessment of today:
1)Cyprus: – – (likely )
2)Montenegro: = (NQ)
3)Finland: + (NQ)
4)Poland: = (??)
5)Slovenia: – (?)
6)Czech Republic: + (likely)
7)Hungary: + (?)
8)Belarus: + (??)
9)Serbia: = (likely)
10)Belgium: + (?)
11)Georgia: ++(??)
12)Australia: + (Sure)
13)Iceland: + (?)
14)Estonia: – (?)
15)Portugal: – (??)
+/=/- : If the rehearsal clips were worse or better than my expectation
?= Borderline above 10th spot
??=Borderline below 10th spot
After the rehearsals, I would say the only sure qualifiers are Greece and Australia. Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Belarus and Poland have all shown they are worth of qualifying. Cyprus should qualify, however the vocals were just such a disaster, and honestly the performance itself is not as exciting, Georgia shows a lot more potential and possibly could nudge her out. I think Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Montenegro will probably all crash out. While I would love to see San Marino qualify I think they are a little out their depth, and with Portugal it is hard to tell, sure… Read more »
Why on earth are Iceland dropping in the odds after THAT rehearsal? Really I do despair…
Because in the words of s!sters: we’re tired.
Increased support in Australia.
i always believed in australia and that kate would be top 10 but whew she’s coming for that podium at this point
I took some heat for saying she’d win SF1 and finish in the top five overall a couple of months back. Not looking so crazy now!
Australia looks amazing! I would not mind having Ozzies as a surprise winner, because I loved the song from the first moment I heard it. Also, lyrics are absolutely great- I think it will do much better with the juries than any other pop-opera song.
if Australia or Sweden get 0 points by the televoters in the final then ESC is not a show i will watch anymore. This year both are outstanding and should be in the top 10.
A cheap pop-opera song that only relies on visuals to grab the attention no thank you. Less than 20 points on the televote is fair enough. Sweden also cheap pop contemporary Christian from the 90s.
Lol Sour haters. Where do you come from? A country that can’t even have a good song and staging?
I have no idea why people are being rude. Yes this is a song contest but stop kidding yourselves. Apart from the fandom most viewers are going to be equally if not more interested in the performance and visuals than just the song. You need the full package, if you have just the best song that doesn’t mean you will win the viewers with a lame staging. Again Full performance not just one element of a performance and this is where some good songs and unique songs like Portugal are failing at.
I think your taste is a little shaky :). I guess you are greek? Greeks ONLY love the greek song so im used to it:)
You are pathetic and racist. Please leave a comment after either Sweden or Australia flops in the televote. It will be fun
He is from Portugal, now go get a life
You mean GOSPEL POP MUSIC … no white Christian sings this way much less as good as black people … And Jon is not singing about GOD. Where do you hear that? In some racial mind set of yours maybe?
Lol Australia got bad score from televote 2 times and those once was deserved. 2017 i mean didn’t you hear that voice crack he did in semi and 2018 it was to dark for a uplifting song and her dress was ugly as hell and she got overshadow by Rasmussen. As for my country i can see why people getting tired for us ( well i got tired after 2016 but still support my country ) and last year was so bad i rather see Felix than Benjamin. I could see why people didn’t vote us last year: most teenager… Read more »
Well they should make a criteria to each broadcaster that each jury that vote should work for different music genres
like pop, rock, soul, edm, ethnic and so that every music get equal amount of chance in this contest otherwise if all jury work in pop music then they will mostly favor pop songs and most likely downgrade rock and ethnic songs bc it not mainstream enough.
Also, Georgia’s visuals look stunning and they might surprise us all.
I love Georgias song:)
it’s an uninspired purple mountains background let’s not
If I’m right the song is about the war. So the staging just gives me chills
no 🙂
Greece and Australia are the best in this semifinal.I want and think Greece to win because i fell in love with ”BETTER Love” from the very first time and i think it is a great modern song that would be sang even by Adele!Great song!On the other hand i don’t understand why everybody is enthusiast about australia’s staging?I mean it is really good ok but from what the press has been saying i was expecting to see at least STAR WARS haha ..in any case….i hope Greece will win the semi because it is a great song and great theatrical… Read more »
Eurovision Daily Press Poll 2019: Results from day 2 of rehearsals:
1. Australia- 077
2. Greece -055
3.Iceland – 055
what that has to do with my opinion? And even with the audience’s opinion? The press poll has their own opinion…go check the odds for the winner of the first semifinal since you want to refer to numbers
Greece fans are now worried. LOL You have a serious contender now! Australia can also slay!
exactly my thoughts.
i wanna hear a beautiful song, and watch a nice presentation of it.
if the song is bad, no circus can save it.
greece has a very nice song, and an excellent singer, that deserves high points.I hope for once that the juries will give them all they deserve.Same goes for the televoting.
Kate – The Queen of Eurovision. Australia winner.
Conan and João are CLEARLY saving theirselves for the SF. Conan is trying to keep his vocal cords and João is avoiding any injury. I saw the rehearsal and this is easily noticeable. It’s clear. Good luck Portugal, excellent song, I hope you surprise all those who are criticising. x
Estonia will fail to qualify big time.
I hope they will get it together and qualify 🙂
I hope you’re right. I do not feel like losing a good performance just to make room for Estonia in the final.
for sure greece will win semi final 1
Not With Australia,Cyprus andGeorgia in it
Also we have some very strong perfomers in semi final one with really nice and balanced stagings ( Joci, Nevena , Otto, Kate Miller). The Greek staging is a mess, and Katerine lacks self confidence on stage (she is not startling or sensational) although she has a good voice. But she is not the only one who has a good voice in this semi. And don’t forget Iceland . Greece won’t win the first semi final, maybe third place max .
How can you tell the Greek staging is a mess? We don’t have enough material to “judge on”. Plus, Katerine is a #multiartist, the same as Ester #Montrealsisters. Her song is outstanding, her creativity is outstanding. He voice is special, unlike other “ordinary” voices this year.
The staging does not fit with the song and does not have a clear concept. The fencers, the lotus flower, the giant ball tossed out into the audience, the dress, this construction resembles to an egg or to a closed flower. Its specialises in nothing. And what is this about ” Her voice is special unlike the others who have just ordinary voices”. We have very good vocalists this year who can deliver their song as good and better than Katerine . We have very good artists who slay on stage and are sensational . Karerine is not extraordinary or… Read more »
There isn’t enough stage material to see the continuity in the performance, just some elements. Katerine DOES have a special voice among all other female voices this year. I am not saying that other artists don’t have good voices, but I heard all of them before in one version or another. Katerine is different.
Georgia? NO. Cyprus? NO.
Cyprus vocals deaf swede are terrible. Also Sasha had no inspiration for the staging.
Probably she’s saving herself for John’s staging.
Go Conan! You are just great!
Australia is amazing
My hunch is that Poland or San Marino might qualify instead of Estonia.
My biggest fear is that Estonia may steal San Marino’s qualification
havent you watched San marinos Rehersel? it was HORRIBLE. You cant think it was good?
Personally, I’m hoping for Finland to knock Estonia out of the qualification spots but both of those songs would be better, too.
Kate’s odds feels like zero gravity.
Hahahahaha that was good!
Stratospherically good!
Belarus or Poland instead of Portugal definitely.
