eShe blew us away in Australia’s second rehearsal at Eurovision 2019.

And now Kate Miller-Heidke has pressed Australia‘s advantage in the betting odds.* Australia’s odds to win Semi-Final 1 continue to shorten.

Four days ago Australia’s odds were as long as 10/1, but today Bet 365 ranks her as short as 4/1. She’s in the blue at several bookmakers, which suggests they back “Zero Gravity” as a credible candidate to win Semi-Final 1.

Australia aside other acts appear to be moving in the opposite direction. They’re either dropping down the odds to win Semi-Final 1 or drifting at bookmakers.

Cyprus and Iceland are both in the red at a spread of bookmakers.

Cyprus’ Tamta suffered vocal mishaps in her second rehearsal due to in-ears problems. Those appear to have harmed bookmaker confidence in “Replay”. Bookmakers including Betfair have her odds to win as high as 7/2.

Likewise Iceland’s Hatari appear to be in trouble. They’ve drifted as high as 11/2 at PaddyPower. Their stageshow is not for everyone, but the fact they aren’t shortening suggests they’ve failed to win people over.

Portugal‘s Conan Osiris is the major casualty of the day. In some cases his odds have doubled in the space of four days. On May 4 Portugal was as low as 9/1. You can now find Portugal as high as 22/1 at RedZone. He’s now dropped to seventh in the odds.

It should be noted these are the odds to win Semi-Final 1, not the odds to qualify.

Semi-Final 1 Odds To Qualify

The odds to qualify look a little different.

Bookmaker William Hill* suggests these ten countries will make the cut:

Cyprus, Greece, Iceland, Czech Republic, Australia, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Belgium and Estonia.

What do you make of the odds? Do you think Greece will win? And who are your qualifiers?

Portugal it’s the best entry and is seems in some way boycott because seems someone don’t want it wins twice. The more amasing song diferente and in own language. Not more than the same. If I they not qualify or being well classified in final i never will again fallows eurovision. How people than votes Israel last year don’t vote for Portugal this year? It’s so strange. After all I don’t believe anymore in diversity in this contest. Regards and good luck for all.

For me, semi 1 is by far the more interesting show and most of my favourites will perform on Tuesday. What’s not to love about Australia this year, I really can’t understand the negativity towards this song. I adore Iceland, and they are delivering the goods, although I’m a little disappointed that there appears to be little that is new in their presentation. Georgia are the real surprise here. I liked the song but didn’t give it much of a chance to qualify, but this dramatic presentation may well knock our a few favourites. Fingers crossed for Slovenia, Belgium and… Read more »

Portugal are wearing PS colours (cannot fully write it because my comment gets blocked): green outfits, “praying-mantis praying for revolution and change” according to Conan’s own words; red background, black and white sneakers… only a blind man cannot see.
Honestly Conan has already won. Just for this fact, he will be remembered in Eurovision history for years to come, even if he comes last.

No matter how good the staging is, if you don’t like the song you will NOT vote for it.

Is anybody else disappointed with the camera angles in general? I still haven’t seen any cohesive performance (yes even in 40 secs which are meant to be the best of the 3min normally). Could this be cause of the small stadium etc? It definitely though helps countries like AUS or Malta that have opted for the “video-clip” equivalence.

I’ve noticed a lot of shots that were either too far-away or started at the back and slowly went forwards. They are bad and make the stage look smaller than it actually is, but I’ve also noticed that some of these shots focus a lot on the audience, but because there’s no audience in the rehearsals, it may look disappointing. I think it’s wiser to wait until we see the full performance.

I don’t get the Australia staging. Maybe I will understand the performance when it’s full.
I have the same issues I had with Sweden 2018 stage show. People can’t see the stage. It doesn’t feel as a live performance. It feels cold.

Considering how bad a lot of the angles are for some countries this approach might benefit AUS. However, I think I prefer Malta’s approach where they stage it as a video but in the end they show the stadium and the crowd and link the two.

I think people always prefer live performances and emotions rather than “video stagings” which come across like fake for them.

I think we can all argue till the cows come come home about who might win this semi final, but the truth is that the top three positions on May 18th are coming from SF2 and Italy. This is a very weak semi musically. You can dress all these weaknesses up all you want with glitzy staging, but the public will not be fooled. Who remembers Salvador’s “staging”? It’s a song contest. Nothing in SF1 deserves to win from the musical point of view.

It actually does. In making the decision to not have staging, the juries and audience were forced to judge Salvador on the song and his performance. Genius move on the part of Portugal, as many acts looked bad trying to fill that huge stage in Kiev.

Most of SF1’s songs are more niche, so whether you see it from a commercial or artistic point of view, there will be differences. For me, some songs are worthy for winning : AUS (yeah, I think it’s a great song), SLO, GRE, SER. And HUN.

Oh Salvador had staging. Him sitting in front of piano with forest background was staging. No one in ESC has no staging.
However that was only part of the winning factor. The fact that every commentator mentioned he had heart failure probably added some too. Plus it was a decent song

He was alone on the satellite stage with largely out of focus soft forestry imagery behind him at some distance. There was no piano. He was surrounded by a sea of mobile phone lights, an effect that the Dutch are said to be keen on trying to replicate for Duncan Laurence. Their problem is that he is on the main stage and not so proximate to the audience on a satellite extension.

Why do people think everybody must have the same taste in music, just because somebody doesnt like a song doesnt mean they need their ears checked it just means they like different kinds of music. Here is my assessment: Cyprus, Greece, Iceland , Australia and Serbia are through. GAME OVER. Montenegro is out. Also game over. That gives us 5 spots remaining, and 11 countries vying for them. Not more than 3-4 consercutive countries qualify, so lets look at this in blocks. Block 1: Finland-Poland-Slovenia-Czech rep-Hungary.- Belarus. I think Finland is most likely out, and Czech boys are most likely in, so the question is… who qualifies from (Poland Slovenia- Hungary- Belarus). After the rehearsals, I would say the only sure qualifiers are Greece and Australia. Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Belarus and Poland have all shown they are worth of qualifying. Cyprus should qualify, however the vocals were just such a disaster, and honestly the performance itself is not as exciting, Georgia shows a lot more potential and possibly could nudge her out. I think Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Montenegro will probably all crash out. While I would love to see San Marino qualify I think they are a little out their depth, and with Portugal it is hard to tell, sure… Read more »

I have no idea why people are being rude. Yes this is a song contest but stop kidding yourselves. Apart from the fandom most viewers are going to be equally if not more interested in the performance and visuals than just the song. You need the full package, if you have just the best song that doesn’t mean you will win the viewers with a lame staging. Again Full performance not just one element of a performance and this is where some good songs and unique songs like Portugal are failing at.

Well they should make a criteria to each broadcaster that each jury that vote should work for different music genres
like pop, rock, soul, edm, ethnic and so that every music get equal amount of chance in this contest otherwise if all jury work in pop music then they will mostly favor pop songs and most likely downgrade rock and ethnic songs bc it not mainstream enough.

Also we have some very strong perfomers in semi final one with really nice and balanced stagings ( Joci, Nevena , Otto, Kate Miller). The Greek staging is a mess, and Katerine lacks self confidence on stage (she is not startling or sensational) although she has a good voice.
