Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl are representing Slovenia at Eurovision 2019 with their ethereal song “Sebi”. Following an intense week of rehearsals, they caught up with our Deban for an interview. The conversation certainly ventured off the beaten track as we discussed some unusual topics — who knew macaroni could be so interesting? Check out our Slovenia interview below.

Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl interview at Eurovision 2019

Zala and Gašper mentioned that they are going to be changing the name of their collaboration to something easier to pronounce. Zala thinks the reason for the change is obvious because nobody can pronounce their names. They wouldn’t tell us the new name just yet but Zala revealed they won’t be called ‘Macaroni’ — she suggested that as a possible band name because she loves her macaroni.

We love Zala and Gašper’s sense of humour. Their personalities are on show for everyone to see in our interview, as they joke about their songwriting process. They joke that they hold the pencil together and write every word and every note as one. This couple can’t be kept apart, y’all! Even when Deban points out that he had to sit between the two of them for logistical purposes, Gašper calls him a homewrecker.

Slovenia second rehearsal reaction

Gašper says that the atmosphere and energy of “Sebi” will not reach its fullest potential until the live shows. It is not the same without a full arena to contrast the intimacy of their staging. However, it will all come together on the night of the first semi-final. This couple is truly in love — they don’t need to act, which is helpful because Gašper believes they don’t know how to act anyway. Zala says she doesn’t plan on looking at Gašper but she just does so naturally, as that makes her feel safe.

The couple are releasing an EP consisting of four songs in Slovene after Eurovision. They will then release an EP of four songs in English later in the year. Four will become eight as their careers truly take off.

Gašper closed off with a somewhat cryptic message for our readers.

“Enjoy and watch out for cute pets so you don’t get too soft and watch out for wiwibloggs because they make us too comfortable and we say a lot of weird stuff here. If you like us, you should also keep up because our single is coming and it’s going to be in English and you will actually be able to understand it more easily.”

What do you think of “Sebi”? Are Zala and Gašper capable of taking us to Ljubljana next year? Let us know in the comments below.

That one was very funny. They look so serious on the stage, it was nice to see them under a different light, just hanging out with Deban and saying silly stuff. I’m excited to follow their work after Eurovision.

This is the only interview I’ve been able to sit through in entirety. Kudos to everyone involved.
