Eurovision 2019 semi one results greece australia

Greece’s Katerine Duska performed with fencers and acrobats. Australia’s Kate Miller-Heidke sang while spinning through space on a stick. And after the confetti had settled, both women were among the 10 qualifiers from Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2019.

Eurovision 2019: Semi-Final 1 Qualifiers

Eurovision 2019: Semi-Final 1 Non-Qualifiers

The voting results presented a number of surprises. For the first time since its Eurovision comeback in 2011, Hungary has failed to qualify for the final. It’s a big comedown for Joci Pápai who secured the country one of its best ever results on his last outing in 2017.

Another qualification streak ended for Belgian’s Wallonian broadcaster RTBF. The country swaps between Flemish and Wallonian networks every other year, and this is the first time since 2011 that the Walloons have stayed in the semis.

But perhaps the biggest shock of the night was Portugal. Conan Osíris was a firm favourite among the fan community, but his eccentricities failed to connect with the wider viewing public.

However, where there are shock non-qualifiers there must also be surprise finalists. The biggest surprise is perhaps San Marino’s Serhat. He narrowly missed out on the final in 2016, but tonight he secured the microstate only its second ever grand final appearance.

Did your favourite make it through? Who was done wrong? And who is going to make the biggest impact in Lisbon on Saturday?

Back to 1SF press conference…

Today, Sergey was complaining about air conditioning. (which I understand as he has to keep his voice).

Will you perform your “hate” on Segey just the same as you treated those Slovenians, when they mentioned an issue with air conditioning??

So before semi 1 I felt quite alone in enjoying Australia’s song. Opera is not the safest card in Eurovision. After an astonishing performance I have a strong feeling they’ll end up REALLY well, like top 3/winning the contest. Anyone who did not like the song before and does do now?

I always liked the song and it was in my personal Top 10, but after seeing the performance on Tuesday I like it even more now and I genuinely think that it is in contention to win. I still think The Netherlands is winning, but if there is any other country that is going to challenge them it’s Australia.

I’ve rewatched the finalists present on the first semi and have some (hopefully) constructive notes about staging (I won’t address vocal issues, but I’ve seen 3 problematic performances): Cyprus – I haven’t noticed before, but Jo is right, there are a bunch of little mistakes here, the camera is constantly a little behind what’s going on. The replay effect is unnecessary. Slovenia – they seem too aware of their movements, it’s clear when they have to look to a different camera and when Casper has a free hand. Czechia – I wouldn’t change a thing. Slick as hell. Belarus –… Read more »

Cant believe Goddess Katerine delivers such a stunning, aetherial performance and fans are moaning in this comment section talking about dissapointment. Camera angles are not Katerines or the greek teams fault, theyve been trying to get them right with the organisers but they suck at it. Still, Katerines performance is so different to everything else this year. I really love everything about it. In the sea of silly effects, Katerine transfers you in a mystical fairytale world.

Goddess ? What else we’ve to listen… She looked so nervous, amateurish, without winning vibes. Without even a small smile on camera, with pain expressions in her face and instability in her vocals in the first half of the song. Bad directoring (we saw dancers to run in order to catch the camera…we saw Katerine to walk on the right side and the tv screen on the centre etc) and bad sound (almost for all entries). So bad tv result…almost tragic. I believe that Greek entry passed 5th or 6th in the final. A song with a potential for top5…will… Read more »

So happy Serhat qualified. Many people will blame him but this man loves Eurovision, he assumes his own style, he manages to talk to a public that may be forgotten by some fans, he is full of positivity and sympathy, it’s OUR drunk uncle. Anyone else think Eurovision has peaked between 2012 – 2016, and it’s only going backwards since then?
I’m all for fun and entertainment, but such low quality performaces like San Marino should not qualify for the final anymore. Also, note to Poland and Portugal: Eurovision is not a costume show anymore :I We are not in the 90’s and 2000’s…
Most of these semifinal performances were either ordinary, boring, outdated, unprofessional, or clownish. Something like Euphoria should happen again, otherwise I have a fear that Eurovision will decline further in the next couple years.

The lesson here is that Eurovision deserves to have more offkey performances with lyrics like na-na-na. This song qualifying just took the contest back 40 years. It’s embarrassing. If Montenegro sent this song, everyone would crucify it. But because it’s San Marino and Serhat everyone celebrates it. It’s beyond crazy. I hope next year we get 20 na-na-nas and la-la-las and oy-oy-oys. That will really make the contest seem relevant.

How is it possible? The overwhelming majority of the qualified artists had a terrible vocal performance .. Horrible .. And Australia? The visible sticks completely destroy the illusion of staging .. Jesus, eurovision 2019 is canceled for me.

Andy

I actually think the visibility of the sticks is cleverly done. First half of the song people try to understand how she does it and second half they talk about it when they see how she does it. Overall, they talk about the staging during the whole song which is good especially when the song itself might not be amazing.

It’s good they showed the sticks, otherwise televoters might think it’s a prerecorded music video and not the live performance.

Also, not sure who you’re talking about when you say “overwhelming majority” because the only acts who did have some major vocal issues were Estonia, Belgium and San Marino, and out of 17 acts that is not the majority 😛

You really asking yourself how did Australia make it to the grand final? Uhm… maybe because they had the best overall performance of the night rather you like the song or not. And Czech Republic, not too far behind, nailed the staging and had the most fun and charismatic performance/performers of this semi.

Dana Internationals song… you are amazing just the way you are …. Well her advice is not that, instead you should starve yourself. Her advice to Lynda W isn’t that you are good just the way you are. I don’t like that.

On a more positive note, I predicted 9 out of 10 (and yes I did not included Portugal), but did not see San Marino’s qualification… (and I am not happy about it… ) Moving on, I became mesmerised by Australia, I now think she can actually win this and generally conforted by the fact that all the good songs (bar Portugal and Poland) got into the final.

Highs
Serbia, Iceland qualifying. Portugal and Hungary not qualifying.
Lows
San Marino qualifying despite an awful song and truly abysmal vocals. Belgium not going through. I love the song but staging and vocals were lacklustre. I kind of understand why it didn’t register with the public but still disappointed. Sorry to see Poland out. Every other qualifier I have no issues with.

Lets not forget that ESC is a party, guys! To celebrate music and meet new friends. Just because your country didn’t make it doesn’t mean it’s bad or because it’s politics. Just keep on partying, that’s the spirit of ESC!
Some of you forget that…

My first spontaneous thought: Germany’s chances of not being the last have increased. I did not discover a song that was really good. Cyprus is exactly the same as last year (song in itself I like, but is just something that has already heard 100000000000 times.) Iceland still stands out, even if it’s not my taste. Greece song in itself ok The Czech Republic has felt that it has already been heard tens of times. Belarus is exactly the same as Cyprus. San Marino you can treat yourself as a fun act, or let it be I do not like… Read more »

not all uptempo songs are Fuego 2.0 for f sake. Cyprus didn’t invent the genre in 2018. It’s like saying all salsa songs are the same. Yes, that’s how idiotic you sound.

The odds were moving quite well in Conan’s favor when he performed. The odds move according to how people bet so I’m pretty confident he had a nice televote.
This begs the question: how can juries bury this song when they gave enough points to San Marino and Estonia that they made it to the final? The two of them were off-key the whole songs. Aren’t they “profissional” jurors?

i bet san marino is way high in televote there is a huge turkish diaspora in europe but i cant see juries push san marino also portugal i bet its 11th with low diff with the 10th(San marino)

Estonia and San marino sang really well during the jury rehearsal, which is when the jury vote. The jury doesn’t vote in the live shows

There’s not a situation where Serhat can sing well. The guy has no voice. Simple as that.

no, he actually did sing well in the jury rehearsel, that’s a fact. you may not like his voice but that’s a different story. the jury performance went really well for him

the juries are corrupt and music industry types who are paid to vote for the rubbish that gets played on chart radio

I liked Slovenia and Iceland the best. They’re just different but in an interesting way. I don’t understand the hype around Australia. Good staging doesn’t compensate a boring song.

I think Australia’s song is great and it fits the staging perfectly. You know, she sings about letting go of all her worries so now she feels light, free, zero gravity and that’s why she’s “flying”. I think it’s brilliant

It’s okay Lukas. Everyone has his/her own preferences. But majority of people enjoys Australia performance. No doubt Slovenia and Iceland were pretty good too last night.

You’re right… they enjoy Australia’s performance but not the song itself. I just think it’s nothing special, rather boring and generic. I really liked the one from 2017 though…

I guess people’s tastes are different. Most people would see 2019 as an amazingly written one and 2017 as that generic one. It’s all up to our tastes.
