The two semi finals of Eurovision 2019 are over and we are now less than 48 hours away from the grand final. Minutes ago, the running order of the grand final has been revealed by the EBU.

Since 2013, the running order has been decided by the show producers and the EBU. The only thing randomly determined is which half each act will perform in, which is drawn after each semi-final.

The idea is to provide a degree of variation in genre and feel, rather than, for instance, giving us six ballads in a row. The running order also takes staging requirements into consideration, ensuring that large props won’t be crowding the off-stage area all at once, nor will we get a glut of performances all with the same colour lighting.

The host nation whose position was randomly decided. This year, Israel’s Kobi Marimi will sing “Home” from position number 14, which was randomly drawn in January.

This year a burst of colour both opens and closes the show. Malta will start things off with “Chameleon”, then 26 songs later, Spain will close with “La Venda”.

Eurovision 2019: Grand Final running order

  1. Malta: Michela – “Chameleon”
  2. Albania: Jonida Maliqi – “Ktheju tokës”
  3. Czech Republic: Lake Malawi – “Friend of a Friend”
  4. Germany: S!sters – “Sister”
  5. Russia: Sergey Lazarev – “Scream”
  6. Denmark: Leonora – “Love Is Forever”
  7. San Marino: Serhat – “Say Na Na Na”
  8. North Macedonia: Tamara Todevska – “Proud”
  9. Sweden: John Lundvik – “Too Late for Love”
  10. Slovenia: Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl – “Sebi”
  11. Cyprus: Tamta – “Replay”
  12. The Netherlands: Duncan Laurence – “Arcade”
  13. Greece: Katerine Duska – “Better Love”
  14. Israel: Kobi Marimi – “Home”
  15. Norway: KEiiNO – “Spirit in the Sky”
  16. United Kingdom: Michael Rice – “Bigger than Us”
  17. Iceland: Hatari – “Hatrið mun sigra”
  18. Estonia: Victor Crone – “Storm”
  19. Belarus: ZENA – “Like It”
  20. Azerbaijan: Chingiz – “Truth”
  21. France: Bilal Hassani – “Roi”
  22. Italy: Mahmood – “Soldi”
  23. Serbia: Nevena Božović – “Kruna”
  24. Switzerland: Luca Hänni – “She Got Me”
  25. Australia: Kate Miller-Heidke – “Zero Gravity”
  26. Spain: Miki – “La Venda”

Does it really matter?

If you believe in statistics then yes, it does.

If we look at the history of Eurovision then we will see that in the last 20 years (1998-2018) only six songs which performed in the first half have managed to win to contest. That’s around 30%. If you are lucky enough to draw second half then spots 17-25 have the best chances of winning the contest.

In particular, spot 17 has three victories: Loreen in 2012 for Sweden, Marija Šerifovic in 2007 for Serbia and Lordi in 2006 for Finland. The next best position is 22 – Netta won for Israel last year performing 22nd and Lena had the exact spot nine years ago in Oslo.

However, in recent years, we’ve also seen victories from the first half: Conchita Wurst from 11th in 2014 for Austria, Måns Zelmerlöw from 10th in 2015 for Sweden, and Salvador Sobral also won from 11th place in 2017 for Portugal.

What can we learn from the running order about each contestant’s chances?

In previous years, the running order has also given an indication of who might have done well in their semi-finals. 2018 is a very good example – Netta performed 22nd after she had won her semi-final. Runner up Eleni Foureira who came second at the semi final was positioned 24th .

What do you think of the Eurovision 2019 grand final running order? Do you think that favourite the Netherlands might have the win sealed? Or could another act still take the crown? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments section below.

I’m so sad and pissed with the spot the ESC producers gave Albania. Already a small country, bringing a song different from the others in foreign language, and to complicate their life and chances more they put them 2nd to sing. It’s disgusting how they gave to their favs their best spots. Just for that I will vote the sh*t out of Serhat…and refuse to vote anyone else!! (From Albania)

Look, the running order doesn’t really matter for Albania. They will get the same amount of public votes thanks to the diaspora, regardless of the spot. What matters for Albania is jury votes, which is not affected by the running order. Last year Eugent was 12th ( where NL is this year) and yet they did poorly with the public( compared to other songs in similar running order), but they did great with the jury. So, as long as Jonida kills it vocally, she will be fine.

It would be fun, but they didn’t have the chance to do that, since Denmark and Slovenia got first half and Iceland second. I still think the most hilarious thing it would be to have Serhat following Hatari, but they missed the chance in the semi.

We don’t care of interesting or not. Singers are preparing and working hard for months and one man can decide their fate on his own. With a random draw, if you pick #2 or the early 5 spots you will just say no luck and not questioning why this one will go 9, 12 and the other will go 1 or 3.
If people can’t handle 2 ballads or same genre in a row why are they watching a singing competition in the first place ?

For me, there are only four potential winners: – The Netherlands, because have to be honest, it’s a perfect song delivered by a perfect voice. He’s a bit of the first in the class, you did not do the exercise that you’re already tired because you know he’ll have a 20/20. I think you are maltese and you are biased about what you said. Yesterday michela struggled with her performance and it was one of the worst. She cant deliver the song live. I will tell that malta dont make to top 10. Malta must learn that less is more about staging. Give a look to the odds. Chances for the win are 1% -11th place (before sf was 4%-9thplace) and chance for top 10 are 30%- 13th place (before sf was 52%- 9th pos)

I find the 1st half weirdly more interesting, more balanced than the 2nd half when we have too many pop or “popish” songs following each other. Great spot for the Netherlands and Australia. Spain will do well I think by closing the show, not sure with Malta opening it. I think the winner will be The Netherlands. I don’t know how juries will rank Kate but I still think the televote will be too low because some still don’t want to vote for Australia, it may change with many years of participation but now I’m not sure. I absolutely hate this Bjorkman dude. Year by year he’s deciding the contest’s fate by arranging the running order the way he wants. Sweden is favourite, of course, getting the best possible slot… Let’s not forget the way he’s rewarding the big 5 countries by giving them the last spot in the Final’s running order: 2014 UK – Molly 2015 Italy – IL Volo 2017 France – Alma 2018 Italy – again 2019 Spain – Miki Last but not least, he was involved in Switzerland and Australia’s national selection and guess what, he made sure these two will get amazing… Read more »

This statistic about the last spot in the final’s running order awarded to Big 5 countries is very interesting. However, Big 5 countries have also been awarded the spot of death (#2) in 2015 and 2018 : respectively France and Spain. Even in 2013, France opened the show which was very weird and totally killed France’s chance for a honorable result. Also since the new running order (2013 to today), only 2 countries which opened the show finished 20th or worse : France (2013) and Israel (2017) which both finished 23rd. Also only 2 countries finished in the Top 10… Read more »

Iceland will be a Ukraine 2018 situation where deliberately destroyed by jurors but praised indefinitely by the televote. Sweden undermined but, finishes respectably. Russia out of the Top 10. Do you want songs with messages? Well, for instance:
Iceland’s song has a reference to the uprising tendency of ultra conservative positions in Europe (as they say, Europe will crumble)
North Macedonia’s song is another empowering message, practically identical to France’s one
Estonia’s song talks about keeping climbing right even if we are through bad times
Italy’s song criticizes how money can make everyone go crazy
Slovenia’s song tells us to not be ashamed of ourselves (just stay true to who you are)
And so on…
Lots of songs with messages! You shouldn’t be so bored tomorrow!

First, I think that we have the tightest Eurovision for years. 5 or 6 countries can win. But I think after the robbery by the jury on Sergey in 2016, Russia had to have a better place, now with the 5th place, they have no chance. Because of this running order, all the jury’s votes will go to Australia (who will be ranked too high to be exceeded. Turned out to be a decent final, although doesn’t beat last years’. I wish we could replace the bland generic songs like Estonia, San Marino and Denmark with cultural gems of Hungary, Poland, and Portugal. It would have made the final SO MUCH more interesting and diverse.

Ridiculous that Sweden was the most suitable candidate to open the show but for Swedish reasons they don’t. Poor Malta.

Regarding Cyprus-Netherlands-Greece. Everybody thinks that means that Cyprus and Greece underperformed. But, just for the case of the argument, why is everybody sure that a bland song like Netherlands won the semi-final? Just think of it. And I’m afraid they did in a way (Cypros and Greece). Dodgy vocals from Cypros – slightly off-key at times. And the Greek entry just didn’t take off (despite Duska’s hard work) Was it the staging – or the sound? Somehow I expected more (and I wanted to be convinced)!

AUS will simply not win
No one ever wins just because of staging and the song is total nuisance
