Throughout the Eurovision 2019 season, Hatari have a expressed their deep interest and sympathy for the people of Palestine. And on May 23 theIcelandic anti-capitalist performance art group made it clear their interest isn’t just a passing one with the release of “Klefi / Samed (صامد)” — or “Chamber/Steadfast”.

It’s a collaboration with the artist Bashar Murad, who hails from East Jerusalem. The city’s status remains disputed. Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem is considered illegal under international law. Israel maintains that Jerusalem is its undivided capital. Palestinians hope to establish their capital in East Jerusalem.

Hatari filmed their video for the song in Palestine’s Jericho desert and released it during their homecoming concert in Iceland.

The title of the song holds a double meaning. Chamber refers to an echo chamber, while steadfast relates to the perseverance of the Palestinian people.

‘Klefi / Samed (صامد)’ — Hatari feat.Bashar Murad

In a statement sent to wiwibloggs, Hatari vocalist Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson said:

“’Klefi / Samed (صامد)’ is a thought on isolation versus solidarity, referring to the various echo chambers we find ourselves trapped within. The Icelandic lyrics have been with us for some time, but hearing it in context with Bashar’s lyrics and the themes he talks about as an artist living under occupation, we immediately had a feeling the two belonged together. Something clicked as soon as we combined forces with Bashar.”

Bashar Murad said:

“When Hatari first approached me to work together, I felt that it would be a great opportunity to continue the conversation rather than turn them away. It was clear to me that we share the same values of peace, love, and freedom of expression. The lyrics for me reflect the Palestinian suffering, which includes but is not limited to: checkpoints, walls, illegal settlements, and constant military presence. I hope through this work with Hatari we can reach people who had no idea of the situation here. I believe in the good nature of humans and that when they see hatred they will reject it.”

What do you think of the song and collaboration? How do you rate it musically, thematically and cinematically? Let us know down below!

REALITY THAT NOOOOOOOO-ONE DARES TO SPEAK-UP EXCEPT FOR HATARI: israHell IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST DICTATORSHIPS AND HATE-REGIMES ON THE WHOLE WIDE PLANET. AND ZIONISTS ARE MULTIPLE(!!!) GENOCIDERS. THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE WAS COMMITTED AND IS TILL THIS DAYDENIED BY THE VERY SAME ZIONIST LEADERSHIP OF ISRAEL (INCLUDING USA WHICH ITSELF TRIES TO KEEP THE EU UNDER ITS INFLUENCE). burrbrr spewing anti-Israel [email protected] inspired propaganda as usual. Those pro palis have no brains (this is what you sound like Burrbrr) This video is pink-washing [email protected] crimes against LGBTQ [email protected] and it’s whitewashing [email protected] crimes against Israel, and those are many. In today’s political climate in the ‘[email protected] territories’ being [email protected] means only one thing: Calling for the destruction of Israel. Just to clarify, Eretz Israel isn’t a thing. Its a vague concept from 2000 years ago to describe a vague area that no-one can agree on. All this from stone-age fables that claim Moses parted the red sea along with hundreds of other comedy sketches. That concept disappeared along with Mesopotamia and Atlantis. This is 2019 in case you hadn’t noticed. Israel does exist, the UN granted that. It doesn’t include the occupied territories and certainly doesn’t include the Golan which was never ever part of those fables. Settlement building has never had anything to do with security or preventing… Read more »

Just to clarify – [email protected] isn’t a nation or a people. It is a term that refers to what is today Israel, all of Jordan and parts of Syria and Lebanon. the name was given by the romans to disassociate it from it’s ties to the people of Israel.

You are, however, very fluent in [email protected] extreme-nationalist terminology. You have used every trick in the [email protected] playbook, and used every term they use, and you used them all wrong. (including the terms ‘[email protected]’ and ‘[email protected]’)

I don’t think you understand what pinkwashing means. It’s when a company or state tries to use gay rights as a sign of how modern and tolerant they are, when in reality they are using it for their own ends. Using Dana International is a prime example. “Look how tolerant we are” while expanding settlements and implementing apartheid-style laws.

To be fair to Wiwibloggs, it is impossible to write an apolitical article when it comes to this song, since the whole song is about politics. Pretending that the factual background does not exist is at least as political as giving the factual background. Your demand for “political neutrality” boils down to silencing any reporting on Hatari.

I’m not biased… I never support Israel just because I’m Israeli
I want facts and justice, not nationalism or something like that
But you will never believe me…

But you said reporting facts were taking sides: “…East Jerusalem. The city’s status remains disputed. Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem is considered illegal under international law. Israel maintains that Jerusalem is its undivided capital.” If you’re bothered by a reporter simply writing about widely accepted facts, then I’m sorry but I have to say, it doesn’t look like you “want facts and justice”.

Which is what the line “Israel maintains that Jerusalem is its undivided capital.” referred to.

Well, you know what, there are even weirdos and governments who does not recognise the existence of Israel. With your logic, the mere existence of Israel in the contest is taking sides and being political. Do you suggest that we should not have Israel in the contest?

@roy
Then what do they see it as? Those who don’t see it that way are generally the “God gave us the land” brigade. God most likely doesn’t exist, and if he did, he wasn’t a real-estate agent. You seem like a reasonable person but maybe living in the middle of a conflict zone prevents you from being objective and seeing injustice the way most of the world sees it.

You’re deluded if you think Eurovision isn’t political to some degree. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t have countries competing musically against one another, we’d simply have them all perform, smile and call it a night. Give me a break.

If all countries will be free to bring their political problems to ESC, green room would become a joke, or a wrestling match.

Hi Roy Moreno, The reason why you only read pro-Pal. comments here, is because all the other people who are not interested in Hatari are now listening en enjoying Arcade and other beautiful songs. They are not spending their time on this topic and are not interested in it.. 39 countries didn’t boycot or protest. Remember that. In my country, at the news, at my work and in my family nobody is speaking about Hatari, and when I mention them they say: oh those people…hey , did you hear the song of .. and then continue with their own life..… Read more »

Woow…what I love about hatari is that their songs are very different from what we know from Eurovision…I love Hatrið mun sigra and they were one of my favourites in this Eurovision…this new song is once again something very different and I absolutely love it …of course I disagree with what they did with the [email protected] flags because Eurovision isn’t a political event…but of course I love them and their music so much 🙂

Get your facts “straight”…Bashar is a part of the LGBT community…no need to pull a rainbow flag. We already know Hatari’s support for the community…their dancer often sported the flag during the ESC. Peace.

Does anyone remember how Loreen met human rights activists in Baku during her stay, and talked about the human rights violations in Azerbaijan; and how the Azeri authorities hated it. I can’t remember anyone complaining about it back then, and calling for a ban/punishment of Sweden. Double standards are not cool.

This is what I love about Eurovision, that you get introduced to new artists you wouldn’t normally come across. Their beats and vibe are consistently great, I love the contrasts in the songs and the imagery in this one with the sand man is really interesting.
I respect them for the fact they have something to say and are using their platform for what I believe to be a positive purpose.

Alon, it is best to ignore them. Their performance at the ESC had a very dark negative energy to it ,and I find it disturbing to see such acts in the entertainment industry today. I am not surprised therefore, that such an act invokes so much negativity as can be clearly seen here in the comment section. The important thing is that many artists came to Israel and brought with them much higher vibes and positivity in the spirit of the ESC and made much more of an impact.

burrbrr
Guest
burrbrr

Please name some of the negativity you have seen in this comments section. All I see is fans rejoicing over a banging new hit. There are indeed much more disturbing things than “a dark” act in the entertainment industry, as Hatari has poignantly pointed out. But please do go ahead, and name the negative comments you’ve seen in this comment section.

Ksenija
Guest
Ksenija

You obviously never heard of industrial music given that you branded them as dark, and accused them of spreading negative energy. They didn’t invent this genre, you know, it’s nothing new. You may personally not like it but that doesn’t mean it’s bad and shouldn’t exist. Don’t listen to it, it’s that simple.

Angelina
Guest
Angelina

Ksenija, it’s not about the music genre, it’s about their message. Before the competition they said jews are infitrated in Europe and stuff. Under presure he took the words back, but he said and meant it.
For Hatari is is not about the westbank, it’s about the jews in general.
And about their own fame and attention, ofcourse.

Angelina

Angelina

Agree with you, Iris.
Dark energy they brought.
Sensitive songs, like Mahmood (2nd place!) or positive songs like many others get no attention at all.
