It takes a good sport to endure a satirical interview that questions your accomplishments. And Australia’s Jessica Mauboy has done it with aplomb.

The Eurovision 2018 star recently appeared on “Hard Chat”, a satirical segment on the Australian comedy series The Weekly with Charlie Pickering.

The interviewer Tom Gleeson opens by describing her as an Idol and Eurovision reject, before sticking the knife in.

“You performed at Eurovision twice and your best result was 20th. Are you the only person to do Eurovision and lower their profile?”

“You went in there well known and you came out obscure.”

Jessica — all smiles and good spirit — clearly disarmed Tom with her kindness. As she laughs at his roasting, he says: “Man, this is like punching a puppy. I’m trying to enjoy it but it’s difficult.”

He also joked about Jessica singing about sexually transmitted infections.

“In your first hit single, ‘Burn’, you sing, ‘Look what you did to me, I need a doctor cause this is starting to burn.'”

“Is this your only song about chlamydia or are there any others?”

Jessica Mauboy, of course, is hardly a Eurovision reject. Our girl continues to slay her way through the Australian music scene, notching up

At the end of April Jess released the music video for her new single “Sunday”, which, we can confirm, sounds amazing any day of the week.

It was co-written with The Orphanage, who have worked with Demi Lovato, Bebe Rexha and Alessia Cara to name a few. The song is the first Jess has written for her upcoming fourth studio album.

The song, and indeed the album, is a reflection on family — the one we are born into and the one that we choose — and the little events that make up our days and ultimately our lives.

“My favourite part of the song ‘Sunday’ is where the lyrics go – ‘I forgive you then you forget, you’re sleeping even if you didn’t make that bed’”, Jess has said.

“There is so much sass in that and I love this idea of creating emotionally how just by little things by not making a bed, folding the clothes, picking up your rubbish can be so irritating and annoying that those things if not said can filter through the day, or the next day or the week or the month and can turn into something really I guess tangy. But I loved how passionate those lyrics and how deep they are.”

Are you loving how Jess handled the interview? And what do you think of her single “Sunday”?

The interesting thing is that Tom Gleeson has been nominated for a Gold Logie – Australian TV Award for most popular personality

Obviously Jessica wanted to be succesfull like the previous aussie acts and coming 20th and last in the televoting was obviously something she didn’t react well do and her departure from the music scene for like a year says it all. Did I mention that she’s deleted all of her Eurovision content from her Instagram? Girl loves the competition but sadly for her, as the interviewer pointed out, the competition more than less put a blow to her career. I feel bad for Jessica because 1) She is amazing 2) Deserved a better staging from Sacha Jean-Baptiste and the aussie… Read more »

Yeah what happened to her? last time I checked her discography prior to ESC she’s like super hot in the Australian music scene like a pop princess downunder. After ESC its like she took a break? Trying to put her ESC result behind perhaps? This interview seems to show it..

I noticed that after Eurovision, she’s been so quiet with her music releases. I didn’t even know she released Sunday many months ago. There hasn’t been any live TV promos of it either. Did her 20th placing really stall her career by that much?

I think so- on a comparative basis, she was the biggest star SBS had sent to the contest and did far worse than Guy, Dami or Isaiah despite that. Moreover, she was possibly the biggest name internationally of the 43 acts last year and 19 still beat her- compare that to Dami, who managed to beat a Russian superstar against the odds and win the jury in a landslide. Had Kate achieved the same result (she’s famous in her own right but as an opera singer/musical theatre composer she’s a bit more niche than one of the biggest names in… Read more »

*sighs* this is my favourite Australian entry but the staging she got was tragic – I mean no one could’ve reached a good placing with that kind of staging. Jess is amazing <3

No wonder she came 20th, cringe perfomance and she even gave the mic to the audience as if she was performing in a local club *facepalm*

It doesn’t take a professional singer to recognize this was a bad performance of a song that sounds like it was written by a robot.

It’s just a damn mic pointing to the crowd. Give it a rest.

I do kinda agree, telling the audience @ Eurovision song contest to ‘sing’ is a BIG No No. The viewers watching at home will feel disconnected. But I think she had an earpiece malfunction because I re-watched it back and she was moving it around.

I love how she basically admits that Eurovision’s voting is so rigged and corrupt.
