The bidding process for the host city is up to full speed. But the Netherlands also needs to start thinking about who will be the host presenters for the semifinals and final.

During a Q&A on Twitter with Duncan Laurence, user @leowltrs brought the idea to the table of a collaboration between Ilse and Duncan as hosts. Not a bad idea if you ask us.

Duncan says out that he loves the idea of being the host presenter for next year’s Eurovision. It has also been suggested he could present with his mentor Ilse Delange.

No official statements has been made yet on who is in the running for hosting.

The Netherlands and EBU are first finalizing the bidding process.

Possible hosts that have been brought up on social media and in mainstream media include Cornald Maas, Jan Smit, Chantal Janzen and Emma Wortelboer.

Ilse Delange has the most TV experience, Duncan is new to the game.

Ilse Delange has been throughout her career mostly involved in writing, composing and singing. But she already has more then enough TV experience. Back in May 2018 she announced in Dutch TV Show ‘Pauw’ that she will appear as an actress in the American series Nashville. She would end up appearing in five episodes of the show.

Next to that she has been on TV in The Voice of Holland and The Voice Kids as a coach (side note: on The Voice is where she met Duncan). She also appeared on the Belgian TV show Liefde Voor Muziek, where artists from Belgium and occasionally the Netherlands cover each others songs.

Hosting Eurovision should be no problem for Ilse, seeing her already impressive TV experience. Duncan Laurence however, is a little bit more new to the game of being on TV.

But the experience of giving interviews and being on TV during Eurovision definitely counts for something. He has already proven he does not have stage fright. Duncan is currently touring throughout Europe, performing in venues and doing interviews with TV and radio stations:

Broadcasters have typically favoured established TV presenters in previous years. That said both Måns Zelmerlöw and Conchita have hosted the Contest recently, so perhaps The Netherlands will follow suit.

Do you want Duncan and Ilse to host? Or do you have another dream team in mind? Let us know in the comments below.

Eva Jinek has GREAT potential! She’s Czech, American and Dutch, so she speaks languages fluently. Tim “The hot Dutch guy” Douwsma would appeal to males and females. So does Douwe Bob. Ilse would be great also, however: her accent. She needs to work on that. I would also like to see someone like Ruth Jacott or Romy Monteiro, because the earlier mentioned are als most all über blonde. Ruth and Romy have a colour, which should be very powerful in sending a message. Someone gay would also be great, but I don’t know who. Maybe Freek Bartels could do it.

Chantal Janzen accompanied by Humberto Tan, Art Rooijakkers, Carice van Houten, Barry Atsma, Tim Hofman or Daan Nieber

But I think they will go for:
Jan Smit and Romy Monteiro (Both have presented the NF of junior eurovision and did some other Eurovision related television shows like a quiz which they presented as a duo)

No chance Humberto’s going to host Eurovision (as brilliant as he is). He’s RTL’s biggest star and he’ll never leave that station. It’s also illegal for NPO to hire presenters from RTL and SBS (and vice versa). Beaurocracy rules! My guess is Rik van de Westelaken, Eva Jinek and Jan Smit in the green room. I would love to see Michiel Huisman join Rik and Eva though. Dare to dream!

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Anouk, whose 9th-place finish in 2013 ended an 8-year Saturday drought that started in 2005, the year after Eurovision went to a 2- or 3-day event with qualifying rounds…

As a Dutchman, the only hosts who I can think of who would probably be good candidates imo, are Tim Douwsma (who gave points from the Netherlands in 2014) or Rik van de Westenlaken (former news anchor but would act enthusiastic enough) as male and Edsilia Rombley (Hemel en aarde :D) or Chantal Janzen (would also act enthousiastic enough) as female. The only risk is that Janzen works at another broadcaster, but according to RTL Boulevard, it is not forbidden: https://www.rtlboulevard.nl/entertainment/tv/artikel/4724221/gaan-jan-smit-en-chantal-janzen-samen-het-songfestival-presenteren Unfortunately, it won’t surprise me if our broadcaster NPO is going to ruin it COMPLETELY because they ‘MUST follow… Read more »

True- but often if you’ve been through the tense and gruelling process of Eurovision yourself, it gives you a great deal of empathy and helps you relate to the contestants- making you a better host as you’re also passionate about the contest to begin with and not just treating it as another presenting gig. Conchita’s impassioned defence of Polina against the booing she faced (in contrast to Alice’s gentle remark of music being above politics-made with a smile) despite being LGBTQ+ and the booing being motivated by Russia’s homophobic laws demonstrates this. Moreover, Mans is generally regarded as a great… Read more »

Gal still would’ve done it if her schedule allowed though. She made that special appearance too. Maria Menounos (who isn’t as famous now but had a huge name back in 2006) still hosted in 2006. Carice isn’t *that* famous and with GoT over now I don’t see it as too unlikely, although it still probably won’t happen.

Carice isn’t as big as Gal Gadot certainly and her schedule would be less hectic, for sure. But in general I don’t know if actors (especially if they see themselves as serious thespians rather than just film stars) are that keen to be presenters/hosts, especially of what is a singing competition- unless the bulk of their work is musical theatre? Honestly, while I think he’d do a good job in tandem with others, Duncan’s singer-songwriter status doesn’t immediately click with being a host, in the way a more performative and (I say this with no judgement or criticism) less creatively… Read more »

Most ESC hosts can be separated into categories: Funny/Snarky (special ones – Petra, most of the gang from this year, I’ll even grudgingly say Terry Wogan) Very Excited (decent few in the 00s – what they lack in great English skills, they make up for in enthusiasm. Basically every year between 03-09) Generic MC (the majority, especially from the ‘70s through the ‘90s. Ireland always looked like they were about to fall into this trap, but just barely missed it. Others, like in 12, 15, and 17, play this horribly straight.) Morons (the ones that go beyond generic into a… Read more »

A few others that come to mind are Anke Engelke, Filomena Cautela, Yigal Ravid (“What a drama!”), Lill Lindfors (of course), and Desiree Nosbusch. Those are some of the gold standards I have for Eurovision hosts, besides the ones I mentioned before. Professional, funny, and visibly happy to be there. I might even add Sakis/Maria as the best of the ’00s, since they had great chemistry and a great attitude. (I’ll also shout out the hosts from 2000,… Read more »

I wouldn’t mind Emma for the Greenroom, because her annoying personality would take off the anxiety of the artists and that would be a could distraction for them and that would be better because their performances make the show. Duncan would be good because his humble personality shines through amazingly and that way he would seem as informal and not speaking a memorised text and Ilse could be too stiff because of her TV experience and possibly knowing the drill too much. I would love to see professionalism as the main priority. There have been instances where hosts came across as awkward. Understandably because presenting in English in front of a 200M audience is not an every day task. I think that Eva Jinek would be perfect; she has an international appearance (Czech/American parents, grew up in the US so speaks English fluently), professional, but likes to have a laugh when it is appropriate. Or Carice van Houten. To balance it out, I would like to see someone who is spontaneous, less stiff and someone who is out going who you can… Read more »

Sorry, maybe I worded it incorrectly, but with appearance I didn’t literally mean the looks of a person :). I also mean the attitude, the way someone transfers the message, the way someone speaks (insecure or very confident). There is for example (as far I can remember) a strong difference between Petra and the hosts in Baku. Petra is used to the larger shows and her humor and personality is contagious, which makes her so remember-able and popular. You could feel that she was able to own the stage and to drag you through the entire show all by herself.… Read more »

Okay, sure…you mean the charisma, style and presence? I totally agree that they had none of that in 2012. Ell is possibly the worst host maybe ever. Nargiz was the best of them. None of them can compare to Petra. This year’s hosts weren’t bad and an improvement on Lisbon. I wish they didn’t always have to try to be funny – I would take gravitas over jokes always.

I agree with what you are saying! That’s why I’m hoping for Chantal Janzen. She is a true professional, did tons of live shows and she has a very sparkly and really funny personality. Eva Jinek is a good talkshowhost, has a great American English accent, but I don’t think she is suited for presenting a huge live show where she is standing infront of 10,000 people. She has never done something like that before. And that’s my concern with all our public service presenters.

I think the ideal scenario is always one sweet person who pumps up the acts and puts a smile on your face, a seasoned professional who may or may not be a serious journalist who can let loose a bit but still maintain control, and a total joker ready to always have a laugh.

I honestly think Arabella in 2015 could have been a great host if she was paired with Conchita and a more seasoned comedian. Likewise, Timur with Jamala/Ani Lorak/Verka/Zlata would have been a winning combination!
