In 2018, she set the Eurovision stage alight in Lisbon. We fanned the flames of “Fuego” and Eleni Foureira burned bright enough to finish second. Now she’s packing her bags and jetting off as a Gypsy Woman on a mission. And she’s setting more than just the Eurovision stage on fire in her new five song EP. The EP was released in May, with the lyric video for lead single “El Ritmo Psicodélico” landing today.

“El Ritmo Psicodélico” — Eleni Foureira

Eleni dropped the lyric video for “El Ritmo Psicodélico” today, which serves as the lead single of Gypsy Woman. Sticking to her guns, the lyric video even features a cartoon Eleni popping, locking and dropping to the psychadelic rhythm.

It certainly doesn’t require a lot of effort to picture the real Eleni making our jaws drop with some fierce choreography to this track. It’s also a perfect expansion of her discography, building on the success of “Fuego” and subsequent hits “Caramela” and “Tómame“.

The Latin flavour is prevalent in the song and throughout the EP as Eleni sticks to her strengths. A psychadelic pop drop isn’t out of place and is also heavily infused with Latin influences. The goddess of fire topped the charts in Spain and “El Ritmo Psicodélico” has Spanish summer hit written all over it.

Gypsy Woman — Eleni Foureira

Gypsy Woman was released in May featuring five songs and more Latin spice than a South American telenovela. When she isn’t meeting a boy in Ibiza, she’s jetting off to Barcelona, leaving a trail of ash in her wake. There is a clear identity throughout the EP as Eleni tackles accessible subject matter over infectious beats. While the title track sets the pace nicely, “Barcelona” is a particularly banging track, as Eleni is “soaking in the summertime”, delivering another summer hit. She stumbles across love in Barcelona, declaring “who needs California, for me it’s Barcelona”.

“Maria” and “Call Ya” also fall in line with the whole package. In “Maria”, Eleni wishes she was the eponymous Maria, as her man only has eyes for her. Eleni even sings the word “fuego” repeatedly, a touch her fans will doubtlessly appreciate. In “Call Ya”, Eleni declares “I am not your misses, I only call ya when I’m bored”. All of this, naturally, is set over big beats and deep drops. In short, Gypsy Woman is a series of dance floor bangers that is bound to get you moving to el ritmo.

“Sirens” — KAAN ft. Snoop Dogg and Eleni Foureira

Gypsy Woman hasn’t been Eleni’s only work in 2019. In addition to a jaw-dropping performance of “Dancing Lasha Tumbai” in Tel Aviv, she even found the time to partner with some big names earlier this year. Eleni sings the chorus of “Sirens”, which are the lyrics from “Sweet Dreams” by Eurythmics. When our girl isn’t ravishing in red, she’s rocking a leather jacket in a series of A-list looks. The red queen holds her own and melds the song together with her sizzling choreography.

<3 the EP! Don’t really like “Maria”, but the other songs are great! So, downloaded: check!
Even though I like “Gypsy Woman”, I do concur with people who don’t like “Gypsy Woman”; it’s a cover from the 90’s. I really like it, but she doesn’t need to re-do it. Just like she didn’t do any favour to (the Greek) Katy Garby’s song “To Kati”. She needs to stay away from covers, and make her own music.

All and all: a brilliant attribution to her previous albums/singles! “Barcelona” is a highlight imho. 🙂

Didn’t Shakira do the same?
Anyway, gypsy is a pretty problematic term as it is used to diminish a range of peoples marginalized in almost all European societies. I am not sure whether Eleni Foureira attempted to raise awareness of that context when naming her EP Gypsy Woman.

I’d love her to go back to Greek language again. Her first two albums are pure pop-heaven. 0:-)

One can’t deny this is international-sounding, even though sung in Greek. For me, this is where “Fuego” started. Btw, do I see Tamta’s leather-heals/boots being used for the first time? 🙂

I also don’t understand why Shaya has never entered. She can be rough, tough and sweet. Greece/Cyprus; throw her in the mix, please!

I also liked Maro Lytra/Litra with “Elevator Love” – https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GSgUMQOG2PE, Elli Kokkinou with “SEX” – https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Q8nNkxWB0, Manto with “Den Eisai Ekei – “https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-LJnpTRlaao” and Despina Olympiou with “Adynamia” – https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UWbT0FfQFDA

Greece has soooo much potential; those artists, amongst the big names like Anna Vissi, Despina Vandi, Katy Garby, Natasa Theodoridou and Peggy Zina made me wanted to learn Greek language. <3

Sorry, I meant this song (whithout brackets): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-LJnpTRlaao

Talking about Manto/Mado and Eurovision bringing nations closer: she and Sertab made this brilliant song after the 1999 earthquakes that was hitting Turkey and Greece. I still can’t stop crying when hearing it. THAT’S how diplomacy should’ve worked! Two angelic voices bringing two countries together, during a rough time, even though they can’t stand each other. Sertab singing Greek, Mado singing Turkish. Maybe, one time, this song will become reality. The Turkish “Ask” (Love) and the Greek “Fos” (light), combined as one. Let’s hope!

Why is nobody talking about the fact that she’s using a racial slur (g****) in her EP title that isn’t hers to reclaim? I’m generally a fan of her songs, but this is really problematic.

This is true. It would be one thing if she were Romani, but unless she is it’s demeaning to Roma.

Oh ffs! It’s a cover of the song from 1991. Chill TF out, snowflakes!

Yes, but in 1991 we were a lot more casual about the use of the slur without regarding its demeaning impact on Roma people, we should know better by now

Words should not be restricted towards people of a certain race. That’s completely ridiculous.

She got her worldwide success from Cyprus at Eurovision, while Greece’s ERT have rejected her for years. Cyprus deserves her win when she comes back.

She’s doing way better than NETTA, releasing catchy tunes and collaborating with many well known artists. Singing everywhere and getting headlines. She should represent Spain and I think she has been approached but it’s risky to do better than 2nd place.

The new EP is HOT and I hope she promotes it.

Always the comparision Eleni-Netta cause people are still salty that Eleni didn’t win… Even Eleni herself said that they are fine and “friends” and everything is okay. I am happy for both careers 😀

How can she represent Spain if she’s not even Spanish?

I think it’s because of the Latin influence of her discography, as well as the fact her boyfriend is Spanish. If she were to do ESC again however, she’d most likely represent Greece, after ERT have proof that she can slay and that them not sending her all these years was a huge mistake in terms of a missed opportunity to nab a top 5 finish.
