In the months and years after Eurovision, most songs from the contest can’t be found on the charts, but a few can find themselves on Eurofan playlists. So way back on June 18 — one month after the grand final of Eurovision 2019 — we asked our readers which songs they were still playing. You guys voted up a storm, casting a total of 37,523 votes. Now the results are in and we have a clear winner. Italy’s Mahmood has won the day with “Soldi”.

The Sanremo winner earned 3,369 votes — or around 9% of all those cast. It’s not that surprising. The Italian of Egyptian descent had one of the most radio-friendly tracks of the year and has smashed countless streaming records. His music video, first uploaded in early February, is one of just five videos from Eurovision to achieve more than 100 million views.

As I wrote ahead of Eurovision, the song stands out from the pack for several reasons.

“Musically, linguistically, emotionally — there is nothing else like this at Eurovision. Mahmood takes us on a proper journey. There’s heartache and sorrow and a bit of anger. But there’s also a strange sense of joy and the sense of a young man on the move. Classical but contemporary, structured yet structureless, this is a unique song with a very big heart. It deserves to do well.”

Mahmood joins some very good company. Cyprus’ Eleni Foureira won last year with “Fuego”, while Belgium’s Blanche won in 2017 with “City Lights”, Poland’s Michal Szpak won with “Color of Your Life” in 2016, Sweden’s Måns Zelmerlöw won with “Heroes” in 2015, Israel’s Mei Finegold won with “Same Heart” in 2014, Romania’s Cezar won with “It’s My Life” in 2013, Ireland’s Jedward won with “Waterline” in 2012, Sweden’s Eric Saade won with “Popular” in 2011, and Turkey’s maNga won with “We Could Be the Same” in 2010.

Two songs I didn’t like at all before that I listen to now: Srbuk’s “Walking Out” and Darude and Sebastian’s “Look Away.” Maybe they just work better off the stage for me?

Similar story. I never use to listen to ‘Like it’ and ‘Sister’. Now they’re on my playlist and I listen to them often.

I just can’t understand Spain’s Mika: it was/is one of my faves, but somehow people in Europe and Australia didn’t care for it. But it turns out to be a perfect summer song and strongly voted. Then why ending so low on ESC? Maybe someone can tell me why. It’s everything we need in Northern Europe! Again: why so low on the ESC-score board? At the same time: I am listening non-stop to Eleni Foureira and Elena Paparizou (a mixture of previous albums, including her brilliant Ouranio Toxo-album) in my car this summer. Their songs make a Dutch summer even… Read more »

I agree it was the most underrated song of the finals. Was expecting Spain to be top 10.

The only thing I can think of is the staging being a factor. Sometimes less is more. I actually preferred the staging they used at OT. Also, I wonder who all at home was thinking ‘WTF?’ when Paco came out . Not really well explained it’s purpose for the casual viewer.

The juries are more to be blamed than the public for that one: 1 single point from the juries putting it last while the public put it 14th with 53 points. Besides, the 10th place from the televote is only 65 points too so really tight.

Sure it’s still not good enough I would have loved for it to be Top 10 but clearly, the problem lies in the juries for such a low place.

“Soldi” is besides PT 2017, LV 2015, EE 2012 and HU 2013 the best song of ESC in this decade.

Congratulations, Mahmood !

What… This really won over ‘Arcade’?

It was once the contest ended that I started listening to ‘Like it’ and ‘Sisters’, and I now really enjoy listening to them.
I used to listen to Sweden, Finland and Denmark, but I’ve grown off them a little.
There are a still a few songs I haven’t listened to the whole way through (except for watching them live), but there are many songs I still love listening to. I’ve even started to listen to songs from some NF’s.
I agree with this result. The songs at the top are probably the best (although there are songs I’d put a little higher).

Soldi is the most innovative and unique song and it is in Italian (and Arabic)!
Mahmood deserves all and he is appreciated not only in countries of southern europe, like Spain and Greece, or in Israel, but yesterday Soldi went gold also in the Netherlands ! That means a lot !
Hope he’ll do soon a european or world tour with the amazing songs of his album Gioventù bruciata !

If Soldi went gold in the Netherlands then why is that not mentioned on the official site of NVPI?

it never went platinum in switzerland or in greece either, don’t trust what labels say lmao they do it all the time. mahmood’s success is impressive regardless, he’s gold *eligible* in sweden

The same there are claims for months that Soldi is platinum in Switzerland, and yet it can’t be found here:

And according to this site Greece discontinued certifying songs, so why are there claims that Soldi is platinum there?

record labels create made up certs all the time – especially in south america. soldi’s streams in greece don’t justify the 6,000 units threshold so that one is totally fake

Whatever you think of the song or it’s singer, it is rather catchy, and an ear worm. One can’t deny this song sticks in your head, whether you want to or not. 🙂
