It’s no secret that Spain’s Amaia Romero didn’t have the best time at Eurovision, but the music video for her new single “Quedará En Nuestra Mente” suggests she wasn’t all that happy with Operación Triunfo either.
Her new single — which will feature on her upcoming debut album Pero no pasa nada — was released on Friday, along with a music video that has fans analysing it for meaning.
The video begins with Amaia performing the song in a studio, filmed in clear digital video. Soon on-screen graphics reveal that she’s performing on some sort of music contest, a show titled The Never Land Show.
This is likely a reference to the Peter Pan stories, where Neverland is a mystical island where no one ever grows up. It could also be a reference to Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch — MJ is a music idol of Amaia’s ex-boyfriend and Eurovision song partner Alfred Garcia.
On the show, Amaia looks distracted and unhappy. She clearly doesn’t want to be doing this, so while the graphics urge viewers to vote for Amaia, she runs off stage.
From that point on the video is shot in grainy filmstock (or an Instagram filter), giving a dreamy feeling to the video. Amaia jumps on the back of a motorcycle and runs away to do things she enjoys.
The rest of the video features Amaia exploring the outdoors — a waterfall, an amusement park, a forest, scenic canals. She looks happy, enjoying herself far away from the pressures of TV talent shows or international song contests.
But the final shot of the film sees Amaia right back on The Never Land Show stage. This suggests that the idyllic journey was all a fantasy, but, we wonder, what does it all mean?
What does it mean?
There’s the possibility that the video represents Amaia being unhappy during her time on Operación Triunfo 2017, suggesting that she focused on happy things outside the show, in order to make it through the intense weeks inside the academy.
Fans have also suggested that the fantasy journey represents how Amaia conveys emotion when she’s singing — she takes the listener away to a happy place.
Others have wondered if Amaia is worried that her Operación Triunfo history is holding her back from an indie pop career. Does she now want to distance herself from the show that gave her her big break?
Earlier this year, Amaia told S Moda magazine that “I would rather not have gone to Eurovision.” Revealing that, “I had a bad time because we did not stop giving interviews, doing a lot of things and I just wanted to sing.”
The song title “Quedará En Nuestra Mente” means “It will remain in our minds” and the lyrics tell a story of falling in love, with all the uncertainty that brings.
While Amaia hasn’t enjoyed the sort of chart-topping success as her OT alums Aitana and Lola Indigo, she still has a substantial fanbase who appreciate her work.
“Quedará En Nuestra Mente” will be included on Amaia’s upcoming debut album “Nadie podría hacerlo”, along with previous singles “El relámpago” and “Pero no pasa nada”. The album is expected to be released some time in September.

Amaia is the OT alum I think is making the best music post-OT. She has a clear sound and her songs have a deeper, more mature meaning that what you would hear on top 40. She might not be as commercially successful as Aitana or Lola Indigo but she will be a critical darling and I can see her winning a lot of major music awards. Listen to Nadie Podría Hacerlo and El Relampago, they’re so good.
The only major music awards remaining in Spain are presented by a top 40 radio, so I’m not entirely sure about that part of your comment.

Eurovision is not that important

Wow this is interesting, there always was something likable about her, and I really loved her Eurovision entry, but this makes me to like her even more.
This is the first song of hers I really like, it has a La Oreja de Van Gogh late 90’s/early 00’s Spanish pop vibe.
In my mind it’s her standing on stage all the time taking the trip only in her imagination to forget about the pressure. She is not stopped on her way out and there is a guy on the motorcycle waiting for her outside so it’s obviously suppose to be escapism.
I think there’s no other contestant recently who can be connected to being miserable in and out of contest like she currently is.
The good news is that Eurovision and OT are now over for her and she can continue her singing career whenever and wherever she wants. And also the fact that there will be plenty of people who will interview her from now on. But if she is still suffering from it due to various reasons, then I hope she can resolve it and be at peace with it in due time.
She’s cute but hates doing press which will lead to her going nowhere in her career.
