We know Norwegian singer-songwriter Kjetil Mørland from his Eurovision 2015 song “A Monster Like Me” — performed with Debrah Scarlett — and his recent return to Melodi Grand Prix with the passionate ballad “En Livredd Mann”.

Following Mørland’s disappointing result in the Norwegian national selection, fans have been craving more — and this summer Mørland delivered with “How to Lose Something Good”.

The new single, much like Mørland’s Eurovision 2015 entry, is a touching song about a lost love. The lyrics are as thoughtful as you’d expect from the Norwegian. They’re simple and direct, yet carry a lot of weight and emotion: “I got high on a feeling, the kind of high I could never keep.”

But it has a completely different vibe and musical style, featuring the talented pop singer-songwriter Mia Virik Brubakken (aka MIIA). It builds up to a catchy pop rock chorus, rather than a power ballad refrain like one might expect from the hitmaker (full name Kjetil Mørland).

MIIA is relatively unknown in the Eurovision bubble, but she rightly achieved domestic success with her 2016 single “Dynasty”.

After having collaborated with a frequent MGP songwriter, perhaps we’ll see her attempting to represent Norway in Eurovision soon?

Mørland, MIIA – “How to Lose Something Good” (Lyrics)

I was out for the evening

Never thought I could fall so deep

I got high on a feeling

The kind of high I could never keep

I showed you all of me

Now I feel so stupid

I got nothing more to say

I give it all, give it all

Then you throw it all away

Like it’s all for nothing I got

No more, no more

You play, play me like it’s all alright

Turn up drunk in the morning light

That’s how you do it

Baby that’s how it’s done

You talk, talk and all I hear is lies

Too damn proud to apologise

That’s how you do it

Oh baby that’s how

Baby that’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

Oh, that’s how you do it

Baby that’s how it’s done

Are you scared to be lonely?

Does it help you to hold me tight?

Why do you go and waste me

When you know we can be alright?

I showed you all of me

Now I feel so stupid

I got nothing more to say

I give it all, give it all

Then you throw it all away

Like it’s all for nothing I got

No more, no more

You play, play me like it’s all alright

Turn up drunk in the morning light

That’s how you do it

Baby that’s how

Baby that’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how you do it

Baby that’s how it’s done

Now you understand

How you lose with a winning hand

Now you understand

How you lose with a winning hand

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how it’s done

Baby that’s how

Baby that’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how you lose something good

That’s how you do it

Oh baby that’s how it’s done

“Following Mørland’s disappointing result in the Norwegian national selection” – we got KEiiNO who won the televote by a landslide. Norway did everything right – although I do love Morland. Holly and he will create magic for the UK <3

I’m hoping like half of the songs of Norway’s 2020 marathon NF will be written by him. To me, Mørland is by far the biggest Norwegian Eurovision gift to date.

From what I can make out, he is writing a potential UK song next year for Holly Tandy- I don’t have a lot of hope for the UK’s efforts but that actually sounds promising!
