He’s the Maltese star that got Europe shuffling to his hit track “This Is The Night” at Eurovision 2012 in Baku. And this month, Kurt Calleja has released the music video to accompany his latest release, “Sweet Chilli“.

This self-written radio-pop number was originally intended to be a Kurt’s entry into Malta’s Eurovision 2019 national final. That is, until the Mediterranean island decided to use X Factor Malta as their selection process instead. Nevertheless, the track has been stirring up the Maltese music charts since it dropped.

With lyrics like “Sugar on my lips and it burns in the morning”, “Candy-covered heatwave” and “Hello, hello – now you want to play”, we suspect that Kurt Calleja’s brand of sweet chilli, which is jam-packed with metaphors, should come with a Rated-R warning!

Kurt Calleja – “Sweet Chilli”

Speaking exclusively to wiwibloggs, Kurt explains:

I had originally planned a return to the Maltese National Selection with “Sweet Chilli” until I found out that X Factor Malta was going to be the new platform.

I teamed up with Matthew Muxu Mercieca, who wrote most of the past Junior Eurovision Malta songs and also for Amber (“Warrior”) and Christabelle (“Taboo”) and many others that made it to the finals of the Maltese selection. We met up at the my studio and started throwing ideas at each other until we were happy with the melody line. That’s when I engaged Gas Incatasciato – the italian producer who had signed me as a songwriter with a record label – and he took the song from an idea to a track.

Sweet Chili Sauce is the favourite sauce of a person I was romantically with. In each relationship, there’s ups and downs; so when things were good they were sweet, and when they were bad they were chilli. I first teased “Sweet Chilli” at my 30th birthday concert back in May, and I am looking forward to performing more live versions of this track.

Kurt’s music video shows us two realities; supermarket scenes are interspersed with kitchen scenes. Miss Universe Malta 2018, Francesca Mifsud, stars alongside the Eurovision alum in the video as the woman that Kurt just can’t stop thinking about.

Other celebrity appearances include famous chef Daniel Grech and Malta’s most popular mixologist James Aquilina.

Lyrics: Kurt Calleja – “Sweet Chilli”

Sweet Sweet chilli chilli turn me on slowly
sugar on my lips and it burns in the morning
Sweet sweet chilli chilli poor it with caution
feels so good – now we got a problem

Sweet Sweet chilli chilli turn me on slowly
sugar on my lips and it burns in the morning
Sweet sweet chilli chilli poor it with caution
feels so good – now we got a problem

When you believe in all your lies
and you need some where to hide
you get me high, then leave me dry
you have a ball playing with my mind

you’re like hello hello, then you walk away
hello hello now you want to play
you’re bad for me I’m addicted to your taste
you remind me of

Sweet Sweet chilli chilli turn me on slowly
sugar on my lips and it burns in the morning
Sweet sweet chilli chilli poor it with caution
feels so good – now we got a problem

I let your body take control
vibing sex and rock and roll
champagne glasses on the floor
self respect’s gone out the door

you’re like – hello hello your skittles taste sweet
yellow yellow that’s what you mean to me
The Taste of sin – I cannot get enough of
you remind me of

Sweet Sweet chilli chilli turn me on slowly
sugar on my lips and it burns in the morning
Sweet sweet chilli chilli poor it with caution
feels so good – now we got a problem

Candy covered heatwave
Sugar coated fever
I want you close, but i need to walk away!

The heat is getting closer,
Feel the chill on your shoulder,
It ain’t much more than a game you like to play

you’re like hello hello then you walk away
hello hello – now you want to play
you’re bad for me, I’m addicted to your taste
you remind me of

Sweet Sweet chilli chilli turn me on slowly
sugar on my lips and it burns in the morning
Sweet sweet chilli chilli poor it with caution
feels so good – now we got a problem
