The last time we checked in with Aly Ryan, the 2019 Unser Lied für Israel act had declared she was through with her country’s national final. The “Wear Your Love” singer confirmed she would not take part in the 2020 German national final and had instead turned her focus to neighbouring Switzerland.
But now it seems the Los Angeles-based singer has another country in mind: San Marino.
Aly Ryan revealed on Twitter that she has sent an email to San Marino broadcaster SMRTV with seven songs, all potential entries for Eurovision 2020. Aly urged her fans to retweet and like her tweet to grab the attention of the broadcaster.
email sent ? to @SanMarino_RTV for #Eurovision2020 i submitted 7 songs in the email ? RT & heart this tweet so they see it ?

Aly also appeared to be unsure if her campaign was working, writing in a later tweet, “i don’t even know if they got my email can u let me know?”

So far, SMRTV has not replied to Aly Ryan’s tweet. While the broadcaster has earlier tentatively confirmed their participation in Eurovision 2020, SMRTV has not revealed any details of their selection process.
Following Serhat giving San Marino its best result ever, with a 19th-place finish for “Say Na Na Na”, San Marino’s director-general said the microstate would be back in 2020.
The broadcaster has not, however, revealed how it will select its act for Rotterdam. In most years San Marino internally selects its act, but in 2018 it used the national final 1 IN 360. It is thought that the broadcaster generally seeks acts who can help cover the financial costs of fielding a Eurovision entry.
San Marino or Switzerland?
Aly Ryan competed in Unser Lied für Israel with the song “Wear Your Love”. While the song had substantial fan hype before the grand final — and despite it topping the Eurovision Panel vote — the song finished fourth with the televote and fifth with the jury. Aly had less than half the televotes of ultimate winners S!sters, leading to an overall fourth-place finish.
Last month, in a dramatic series of tweets, Aly revealed that she would not return to compete in the German national final. She explained, “I told NDR the only way I would even CONSIDER IT, would be through internal selection.”
Aly later confirmed to fans that she had submitted an entry to Switzerland’s internal selection. Switzerland has no restriction on nationality this year and submissions closed on 16 September. A total of 515 songs were received and will be evaluated by a similar demographic jury system as Germany has.
What do you think? Should San Marino’s broadcaster select Aly Ryan as their act for Rotterdam? Or should she focus on Switzerland? Tell us your thoughts below!
Honey, getting into Eurovision doesn’t mean you can be successful. If you still can’t make it in America, maybe you should try harder when writing songs. Maybe some lable companies will sign you if they hear some potential.
yesss, ranting girl for San Marino!!
I share some of her opinions about the national preselection in Germany. S!sters should not have won and some aspects – but not proven ones – seems incoherent and strange. But Aly’s behaviour seems unprofessional and emotional. If San Marino or Switzerland get involved with Aly and she would end up on a bad place 2020, will she say again, that she has been treated badly and unfairly?
There is a much worse person than Aly Ryan right now and she is very bitter of Eurovision. Her name is Ilira and I just found out about her. Why are “artists” like this nowadays?
Probably sending the remainings from the Lied camp. 7 songs after a national final seems so quick.
This just screams “I’m desperate”.
IROL or Valentina with an emotional song should go to Rotterdam. But it’ll probably end up being Serhat again.
IROL!!!!!
It’s up to San Marino tbh. It’s kinda rude to assume they have noone better than you and will be amazed because you took them into consideration. That’s how I read it at least. I hope that weren’t her thoughts.
While, I don’t condone her bratty behaviour, I would like to see her participate in Eurovision in some capacity whether thats with Switzerland or San Marino, most likely Switzerland because after Luca killed it in Israel, I believe that the Swiss Republic will send established artist from here on in, and yes I am using established in a loose context here in regards to Aly, she has some good songs out there, if they are of the calibur of No Parachute and Be Alright then I’ll have no complaints seeing her in the final in Rotterdam otherwise were gonna have… Read more »
Now two germans applied for San Marinos National final Aly Ryan and Freshtorge, a german youtuber xd
As much as she wants to blame the national selection, the juries and the “robbery” of it all, she still finished 4th with the televote, and you can’t accuse televoters of robbing anyone, as they literally just vote for the act they like the most. Get over it, if it was up to me Lilly would’ve won anyways. And it’s 2020, it’s been two years since Valentina last represented San Marino, she should come back and keep this tradition alive.
I personally would enjoy her at Eurovision and I think she’s applying for San Marino because she wants success for the country after their best finish at Eurovision 2019
Aly Ryan doesn’t give a good goddamn about San Marino or its track record.
Jesus get a grip
German broadcaster NDR was clearly against her. They eagerly wanted Sister to become their representative song – for whatever reason. This song was not even included in the national final but somehow got a magical wildcard. And they asked two persons who are not even related nor they knew each other before to sing it. S!sters also received the best place in the running order, which is the last one and favourite Aly Ryan got the worst place – 2nd place. I clearly understand her that she won’t represent Germany anymore. I would do the same. I don’t think she… Read more »
She is getting notorious for saying some things and acting in a negative way on social media and I am not liking it. Here’s to hoping that she’ll get on the right track and that she’ll get more supporters soon. There are lots of ways for her to improve on and maybe there will be an appropriate time for her to finally sing in the Eurovision stage.
I get that she wants to go to Eurovision really bad, but does it have to involve sending 7 (!) songs to a broadcaster that haven’t even revealed the plan for 2020? And what seems even more bizarre to me, would she rather pay lots of money and represent San Marino than take a part in her home country’s NF? It almost comes off as if she was seeking revenge on NDR for not selecting her internally, like “watch me do well for the country that actually chose me”. Anyway, I’d prefer to see artists having something to do with… Read more »
She has criminally bad vocals.
Send the Sanmarinese rapper! How long he will wait?
Wow… Aly must be the new MIHAI. Desperate.
7 songs? Machine… 🙂 Honestly, San Marino is a microstate, so that would be one of a few cases I would totally accept a “foreigner” representing a country in Eurovision. If it’s a bop, I am ready, cause San Marino needs bops after their past, uhm, let’s call them kindly “entries” (sorry, Joe, I really love your comments xD).
Oh please no. Anyone else. I would much rather have someone that wants to represent San Marino as a country and not just as a vehicle to get to Eurovision, someone who makes good music or someone that seems like a nice person. For me, Aly is none of the above.
Serhat is the last of those three criteria, but not the first two.
Desperate much?
I mean if she really wants to represent San Marino she should have that £€$ ready for San Marino’s participation fee 😀
oh wow she suddenly has a chance. i believe wear your love with a good performance would’ve been a cute top 15.
But could she have given a good performance?
What this is telling me is that she doesn’t care about the country, just about going to Eurovision in any way possible. That, to me, isn’t what it’s about. Say what you will about Serhat or Jessika/Jenifer: they knew what country they were representing. Serhat’s visited multiple times! Aly Ryan doesn’t know or care. She just wants a platform. I’d be happier if they went with Sara de Blue, who’s a better singer, a (from what I can tell) nicer person, and has at least a little precedent with the country.
That being said: if she’s got a bop that can deliver live, practicality (i.e. getting my little buddy San Marino back-to-back qualifications for the first time EVER) wins out. But I dunno. She needs a better attitude.
And fundamentally, the only way I would completely lose respect for San Marino is if they sent a blatant fame whore with no discernible talent like the Human Ken Doll. Aly Ryan is talented enough that I could overlook my qualms, but don’t be desperate.
I just think she is honest and I don’t know why people are attacking her, she is saying things everybody wants to say, but doesn’t want to because of the correctness, the same thing happened with ZalaGasper this year at the conference – I bet almost every artist wanted to go to sleep and were tired of getting the same question all over again, but they were the only one who were honest..
I still haven’t stopped clapping my hands to Gasper’s awesome and true statement. Down with PC.
Gasper were right, but it had nothing to do with political correctness.
Of course it had, mr. know-it-all.
You mean daddy na na na? C’mon, as if it was their worst entry.. we’ve heard worse from San Marino.
Serhat deserved his placing.
We’ve heard worse from San Marino, but alas, it also came from Serhat.
I take it you mean his 2016 entry, yes?
If she should really go to Eurovision next year, then it should be for San Marino. I don’t think that Switzerland are that desperate to choose her! She should leave Switzerland alone and focus on San Marino, if she really wants to do it.
On one hand, San Marino has yet to send a young-skewing song in its history of participation other than probably its pop-rock entry in 2008 (“Complice”) so yeah, I can see SMRTV considering her. On the other hand, Aly Ryan’s recent comments over Germany’s selection process which made her sound like a bitter sore loser doesn’t sit well with me but maybe she could change my opinion of her if she actually has something good to offer in the event she gets picked.
That’s one way to force a broadcaster to select you I guess.
In my perfect little world, a given country is represented with a song written and performed by its citizen – just my opinion, don’t @ me
That being said, good luck to Aly, Wear your love is still a bop, and I hope she delivers something equally good
I’m from Germany and maybe I should be pissed that Aly is “cheating” on Germany …..but no, I am happy for her and San Marino because Aly Ryan is a really good artist and I think with her San Marino has a real chance to get near the TOP 10 next year (depends on the song). This year I was so happy that SM got into the Grand Final.
