Yesterday Swedish media breathlessly reported that Swedish Eurovision legend Carola would be making a comeback at Melodifestivalen 2020. But now the three-time Mello winner has taken to social media to deny claims of a comeback.

Carola Häggkvist made the announcement with a lengthy Instagram post. There she confirmed that she had said no to Melfest 2020 twice. She wrote that in August, “one of the strongest composers” offered her a “nice song”. Then earlier this month another songwriter pitched a Mello entry to Carola — a “true tribute to the Creator of the entire universe”.

And while Carola said she was grateful for all the “confidence, interest, glowing fervour and surprise”, she had decided not to participate in Melodifestivalen 2020.

The Melfest legend explained that she was not prepared to do a show like Melodifestivalen or Let’s Dance due to the “media circus”. She wrote that “as long as the level of work ethic exists between the [tabloid press] and SVT, I would be very naive if I would once again allow myself to be a victim of it. Carola confidently noted that “I’m actually smarter than that — than to say yes”.

Vem vet i framtiden.

The news will come as a disappointment to fans of the schlager diva. However, plenty of her fans have left comments on her Instagram post, supporting Carola in her career choices.

If Carola had made it to Mello 2020, it would have been her fifth appearance. Carola first competed in Melodifestivalen 1983, where her song “Främling” won and went on to place third in Eurovision. She returned in 1990, where “Mitt i ett äventyr” placed second at Melfest.

In 1991 Carola won Melfest with “Fångad av en stormvind” and went on to also win Eurovision with the upbeat number. In 2006, Carola took another shot at Melfest — and won. Her song “Invincible” went on to place fifth at Eurovision.

Carola last competed at Melodifestivalen in 2008, as a duet with Andreas Johnson. Unfortunately their song “One Love” crashed out in the andra chansen round.

And while Carola won’t be part of the Melfest 2020 roster, P4 Nästa wildcard winner Amanda Aasa remains the first confirmed act to date. SVT is expected to reveal the full 28 competing acts of Melodifestivalen 2020 sometime in November.

What do you think? Should Carola say yes to Melfest? Or is she better off staying away? Tell us your thoughts below!

The tabloids seem to be in desperate need of a story. However unrealistically, I actually was hoping it could be true. Not because I like her music, but because she is an interesting Eurovision character, much more so than many other winners. Another participation of her would have been interesting, at the very least.

haha why do you report on this? We in Sweden knew she would not compete. Very ennoying you reported that she would compete yesterday and today NOT. Do your research next time. Its not nice to Carola to do this i think.

Thats exactly why they did it. Because they implied something that turned out to be false.

Wiwwibloggs did no research at all. later in the day it was the opposite so. You dont write an article if you dont do research first.

They were simply relaying media reports, and then when the story evolved, they reported that too. They’ve done nothing wrong.

Even if she was competing she wouldn’t have been allowed to say so before SVT confirmed her. Otherwise it is a breach of rules and disqualification.

those who compete in the Melodifestivalen must not say that they should join before svt goes out. In previous years, artists have said the same thing when someone asked about their participation in the Melodifestivalen
