Crown princess Elisabeth of Belgium turned 18 today. And, in a ceremony fit for the future Queen, the royal family threw an official ceremony with several speeches and performances. Whatever could an heir apparent desire? A live performance from Eurovision 2017 participant Blanche.

Blanche sang a total of three songs for the Belgian crownprincess and her guests: “Happy Birthday”, “City Lights” and “Miss You”. She did this in her typical pared-back style, guided by live musicians. Queen Majesty Mathilde of Belgium was deeply touched by Blanche singing “Happy Birthday”:

The emotion she pours into the tune takes it to a new level. You can watch the full video of the birthday event below. Blanche’s performance starts at 01:01:42. In the video below she sings also ‘City Lights’ and ‘Miss You’.

Blanche was announced to the royal family and guests as follows.

Sires, Majestys, Madame, Royal Higness and ladies and gentlemen. After her success in TV program The Voice Belgique, she was the participant for Belgium in Eurovision 2017. Since then we have kept discovering more of her big musical talent. We are delighted to welcome her here today. She will bring two of her numbers: “Miss you” and “City Lights”.

King Filip of Belgium and Queen Mathilde of Belgium have four children. Crown princess Elisabeth is the oldest and therefore first in line to follow her father. Princess Elisabeth will become the first female ruler since the founding of Belgium — the country has only had kings so far. She is known to be a fan of both pop and classical music. According to the Flemish press, the crown princess requested to have a mix of both genres at the event.  Therefore the Royal Balletschool of Antwerp gave a performance guided by classical music before Blanche performed.

Blanche was dressed for the occassion by Belgian designer Dries Van Noten and styled by Belgian stylist Kate Housh.

Is ‘Miss You’ an original song. If it is, I hope it’s on Blanche’s new album!

Glad to see she’s doing fine. And a word to the wise of the organizers, if you’re doing a massive group photo, don’t put at the front a group in skin coloured jumpers, it looks a bit weird. You know what I mean…

Blanche’s voice can make any song sensual and mysterious. Should have been a Eurovision winner.
