Serbia in Junior Eurovision 2019: Darija Vračević “Podigni Glas (Raise Your Voice)”
Eleven-year-old Darija was internally selected, with a selection committee choosing her song from a number of public submissions. Darija is best known to the Serbian public for competing in the pan-Balkan singing competition Pinkove Zvezdice earlier this year.
And Darija doesn’t just sing. She’s a talented dancer and is part of a pro-team. She’s won numerous gold and silver medals at festivals throughout Serbia. And her talents don’t end there. She’s also an accomplished actor, starring in musicals and lending her voice to Serbian dubs of films and shows from Disney, Pixar, Paramount and Nickelodeon.
Speaking to JuniorEurovision.tv about her participation, Darija says “I hope to find friendships for a lifetime. But I am also very much looking forward to a great new experience. I will visit a new city, meet new people and take part in an amazing music competition.”
What do the “Podigni glas (Raise Your Voice)” lyrics mean?
The Greta Thunberg effect has hit Serbia. Like so many of her peers, Darija wants to raise awareness about the issues our world is currently experiencing. And “Podigni Glas (Raise Your Voice)” does just that.
The lyrics alert us to the crises our planet faces, urging us to look after one another and the world we live in. We can do this by raising our voices and letting our message be heard. The chorus goes:
“Raise your voice, for all of us,
Who are living the future together,
Raise your voice, do it,
Because tomorrow is going to be too late.
Earth is the only home we have.…
Raise your voice!”
Darija tells JuniorEuroivison.tv that she was touched by the current developments in the world. This inspired her and, through her music, she wants us to wake up and start caring: “My song is about the catastrophes that are happening on our planet. I am very touched by all of this because I think that adults should make more efforts to prevent it. I want to encourage everyone to think about it.”
At her video shoot, she expands on the theme: “It’s about climate problems, fires and floods”. Darija may boast a cheery demeanour, but her warning is stark:
“Now raise your voice / and make a choice / Earth is hurting now / and that’s our only home … / make some noise / time is running out / the future can not hold”

Serbian text
Podigni glas
Od samog prvog daha,
svi smo mi ovde gosti,
na vazduhu i vodi
planeta život rodi
otkud glad i rat, pogodi.
Ona je ovde bila
otkad postoji vreme,
ali pod ovom vatrom
njene su usne neme
sat otkucava poslednji čas!
Podigni glas, u ime nas
koji zajedno budućnost živimo
podigni glas, uradi to
jer sutra već sve biće prekasno.
(Raise your voice and make a choice).
Da li si čuo vetar
i tužnu pesmu mora,
video kako gori
hiljadu zelengora
svet pred očima nestaće nam.
Podigni glas, u ime nas
koji zajedno budućnost živimo
podigni glas, uradi to
jer sutra već sve biće prekasno
Zemlja je jedini dom za sve nas…
Podigni glas…
Now raise your voice
and make a choice
Earth is hurting now
and that’s our only home
Now raise your voice
and make some noise
time is running out
the future can not hold.
Podigni glas, uradi to,
jer sutra već!
English translation
Raise your voice
From the very first breath
We are all guests on this planet,
From air and water
She yielded life
So, where do the hunger and wars come from? Guess!
She’ s been here
from the beginning of time
But under this fire
her lips are sealed
The clock is ticking its final hour
Ref:
Raise your voice, for all of us,
Who are living the future together,
Raise your voice, do it,
Because tomorrow might be too late.
(Raise your voice
and make a choice)
Do you hear the wind,
the sorrowful song of the sea?
Have you seen eternal forests
go up in flames?
World is disappearing before our eyes.
Ref:
Raise your voice, for all of us,
Who are living the future together,
Raise your voice, do it,
Because tomorrow is going to be too late.
Earth is the only home we have.…
Raise your voice!
Now raise your voice
and make a choice
Earth is hurting now
and that’s our only home
Now raise your voice
and make some noise
time is running out
the future can not hold.
Raise your voice, do it,
Because tomorrow…
My winner along with Kazakhstan
Nice to see that most countries competing are taking this contest very seriously. The standard is really good and the so called big guns of Eurovision should take note. By that I mean the likes of Sweden., Germany and even the UK. The Nordic countries do surprise me that they are not taking part.
This song sounds great. I especially like the parts from the 2nd verse onward. This is in my Top 5 if not Top 3 for the year, and I think it’s the best song that Serbia has had in the contest at least since I started following in 2014.
love this song. serious message with a genuine concern and a childish touch. most of the others could never
Its a descent song but the jesc voting is….weird to say the least. I have no idea how it will score.
BY FAR my favorite song of JESC 2019. Go Serbia!
(Also Darija is adorable)
Winner !!! Or in top 3 (Poland and Macedonia could be also winner)
It’s a good entry from Serbia! Decent melody, well-sung but the instrumentation on the song is a little….naff?
Guess after throwing all those instruments at their ESC entry, there weren’t any left! 😉
They might place third or fourth . Great song and great message. Well done Serbia
SUCH a big improvement compared to last years, incredible. This should get them their best placement since their return in 2014.
