Russia in Junior Eurovision 2019: Tatyana Mezhentseva and Denberel Oorzhak “A Time For Us”

Russa’s national selection took place in Moscow on 24 September. Eleven acts competed, with the final result determined by a three-way split between an online vote, a kids jury and an adults jury. Once all the scores were tallied, Tatyana and Denberel came out on top.

Despite their young ages, Tatyana (nine) and Denberel (13) are seasoned singers. They first met at the Children’s New Wave 2019 contest, which the elder won. He’d previously won the You are Super! talent show on Russian TV channel NTV.

They are the only duo or group participating in Junior Eurovision 2019.

What do the “A Time For Us” lyrics mean?

This quintessential ballad boasts strong modern production. It’s held together by the powerful voices and chemistry of the two young singers.

“A Time For Us” is about staying close to your friends and yourself despite chasing success. It’s inspired by the approach to life from the younger generation and the growth of social media.

Speaking to JuniorEurovision.tv, the pair say: “We are staying on top of everything that happens. We access to internet all the time, and we want to be aware on what is going on. But we should remember the important things. It is within our power to make the world a better place, and to save our planet! It doesn’t matter whatever country you are from or family that raised you – it is all about us”.

Singing in Russian, Denberel sets out the song’s message from the very beginning: “Let them talk, that others might be better than we are, I don’t care, as I just wanna be myself. Tatyana continues: “spending life on success, neglecting others, we won’t become happier”.

The song carries on with a call from Tatyana: “we’re free and bold, go and wake the world”. Denberel responds “let it be hard sometimes, stick it to your way”. This illustrates the feelings of staying united and true to yourself.

The chorus is all about spreading love and joy:”This time is for us – just live, the world has got no boundaries – time for love”. The lyrics inspire hope and positivity, no matter the adversity.

In keeping with this year’s prevailing trend, there’s even a vaguely environmental message: “I care who we are, and what we’re gonna leave here, we’re like billions of parts, of the entire world”.

The powerful anthem should resonate with the audience and be a blast in the arena. Undoubtedly youthful, there’s a maturity in the delivery that makes it believable.

Russian text

Pust’ govoryat,
chto kto-to mozhet byt’ luchshe nas —
mne vso ravno, ya lish’ khochu byt’ soboy seychas.
Moy dom — eto mir,
i v nom tak mnogo prekrasnogo,
no tratya zhizn’ na uspekh,
pozabyv obo vsekh,
my ne stanem schastliveye

We’re free and bold
Budet trudno i pust
Go and wake the world
Prodolzhay svoy put

Eto vremya dlya nas
Prosto zhivi
Etot mir bez granits
Vremya lyubvi
Vsegda i vezde
Spinoy k spine
Sokhranyaya lyubov’ v svoyey dushe
Eto vremya dlya nas
Tol’ko zdes’ i seychas
Vsegda i vezde
Spinoy k spine
Sokhranyaya lyubov’ v svoyey dushe

Mne vazhno kto my
I chto ostanetsya posle nas
My milliardy chastey
Yedinogo tselogo

Budet trudno i pust
Get it on, Get it on, Get it on, Get it on

Time has come and it’s now
Live and keep on (Just get it on)
There’s no limit for us
As we’re strong
To unite the world
And break every wall
Keep the fire up and burning in our souls
Time has come and it’s now
There’s no limit for us;
To unite all the world
And break every wall,
Keep the fire up and burning in our souls

Eto vremya dlya nas!

English translation

Let them talk
That others might be better than we are
I don’t care
As I just wanna be myself
This world is my home
And there’s are so many wonderful things in it
But spending life on success
Neglecting others
We won’t become happier

We’re free and bold
Let it be hard sometimes
Go and wake the world
Stick to your way

This time is for us – just live
This world has got no boundries – time for love
Forever and everywhere
Back to back
We’ll be keeping love in our souls
This time is for us
Only here and now
Forever and everywhere
Back to back
We’ll be keeping love in our souls

I care who we are
And what we’re gonna leave here
We’re like billions of parts
Of the entire world

Let it be hard sometimes
Get it on, Get it on, Get it on, Get it on

Time has come and it’s now
Live and keep on (Just get it on)
There’s no limit for us
As we’re strong
To unite the world
And break every wall
Keep the fire up and burning in our souls
Time has come and it’s now
There’s no limit for us;
To unite all the world
And break every wall,
Keep the fire up and burning in our souls

This time is for us!

It’s a very cute and pleasant song. But every year at ESC/JESC, there are some songs that sound more like exhibition songs than competition songs, and I think this is one of them. Nevertheless, it’s another good entry from Russia in JESC.

I think this is actually a bit underrated and some people really seem to dislike it.
I don’t see it as a bottom five song.

Miles ahead the best of the best of this year’s JESC, and probably one of the best songs to ever compete in the contest! There is magic between the blend of Denberel’s approach to throat singing and Tatyana’s more delicate approach to the song, which gives this masterpiece a unique atmosphere that will grace the contest only once in its lifespan.
I’m getting 2017 vibes about this song, and I correctly guessed the whole Top 3 in order that year. I’m counting on another victory for Russia with this one!

Don’t believe in a place in Top-5 this year for Russia, but I am so happy for Denberel.

I don’t swear, but this entry is underrated AF! I have generally been a sucker for JESC duets over the years, and what I love about this one is the disparity between the two singers. First, you have Denberel, who reminds me of a young Grigory Leps, with that rather abrasive-yet-musical sound. Then you have Tatyana, with that delicate, angelic voice. It’s a marriage of rough and smooth, and dark and light, which works perfectly, as it did for Hatari at the adult contest. No doubt, one of the best moments in Gliwice will be at the start of the… Read more »

The title of the song reminds me of that Jim Nabors(?) song of the same name.
