Georgia in Junior Eurovision 2019: Giorgi Rostiashvili “We Need Love”

Georgia got started on its Junior Eurovision 2019 selection early. The winter snows had barely thawed when the second season of Ranina kicked off on 24 March. Following a casting show format, ten candidates were whittled down throughout the series’ ten-week run.

On 26 May, just one week after the adult contest ended, Giorgi Rostiashvili was crowned the winner in a three-song final. Despite the headstart, fans had to wait until 7 October to hear his internally selected song “We Need Love”.

The 13-year-old singer is also an accomplished musician and studies the piano. Prior to JESC, he won the top prize at Tblisi’s National Competition of Children’s and Youth Choral Collections. In fact, Giorgi has been on a winning streak since the age of eight.

Going to Poland, he’ll be only the second solo male singer to represent Georgia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

What do the “We Need Love” lyrics mean?

“We Need Love” is unique amongst the 2019 crop of entries, in that it’s heavily reliant on vocal harmonies. The old-school melody is carried almost entirely by vocal harmonisation. Instrumentation is kept light and to a minimum.

The sound transports the listener to a bygone era of black and white Hollywood movies, a genre which proved very successful for Georgia in both 2016 and 2017 when it came first and second respectively.

Even though we’re almost in the 2020s rather than the 1920s, it all works thanks to a timeless message — love! Giorgi’s brand of love extends far beyond the clichéd boy meets girl narrative. Instead, he sees love everywhere in the world around him. Whether it’s sunny, raining or snowing, he sees life as a fairytale.

His perpetual joy extends to the music video, where we see past contestants from Ranina join Giorgi for some tiled fun, á la The Brady Bunch. Last year’s Georgian rep Tamar Edilashvili also makes a cameo.

Speaking to the Junior Eurovision team, the vocalist says his entry “is very positive, bright and funny. With my song, I want to make everyone feel good. I try to do my best in order to give happiness and joy to everyone. When I perform, I also try to share good mood and positive attitude to the audience.”

English translation

Today the sky gives us me the sun again,
I hold out my hand to the sun
This day is like a new fairytale
And we believe in love.
It’s snowing, what a beautiful snow it is
The sky knits the dreams
We’ll return the sun to the sky
And we believe in love

Pa ra pa pa…

It’s raining, what a beautiful rain it is
I walk the way where the mist drifts
The sun will lighten my way
And we believe in love.
It’s snowing, what a beautiful snow it is
The sky knits the dreams
We’ll return the sun to the sky
And we believe in love.

Pa ra pa pa…

Love love love
We need a love, love, love
Everybody smile
Everybody smile, smile, smile
All we need is love
Love Love Love

Pa ra pa pa pa

I really like this song! Yeah, it’s different, but also very pleasant to listen to, very optimistic and calming 🙂 It reminds me of a music themes from Sims 1 though 😀

Well this is something … different.

Not sure it’s my thing, but it’s a fun song that stands out nevertheless.

This is in my top five this year and probably (alongside the Ukraine), the one that I enjoy listening to the most. It is the sort of music that I have a soft spot for and he is really cute. Super-interested in how they’re going to stage this.

This song is such a grower. When I first heard it, I honestly suffered getting through the full three minutes, but now it just makes me smile, and I honestly really love it. It’s such an earworm, which I can’t resist singing along too (although I sing the lyrics “pa ra pa pa” instead of the apparently correct “ba da ba ba”). Everything about Giorgi is so bloody damn cute, even his name! He has the same x-factor and charisma that took the likes of Michael Varosyan (Mika) and Grigol Kipshidze to runner-up positions at JESC. I have a feeling… Read more »
