He took Europe by storm with “Roi”, first winning Destination Eurovision before delivering a heart-felt performance in Tel Aviv. And on Saturday evening France’s Bilal Hassani proved he’s much more than a fad by winning Best New Artist at the French NRJ Music Awards.

The annual NRJ Music Awards have become a major annual event for the French music industry. They celebrate the biggest moments of French music and are seen as a bellwether of who is current, hot and on-the-rise. The live show includes performances from some of the most in-demand singers of the moment. Look no further than Bilal’s category. To secure the prestigious “Révélation Francophone de l’Année”, he had to beat Boulevard des airs, Lenni-Kim, Maëlle, Roméo Elvis as well as Trois Cafés Gourmands.

Bilal Hassani’s big moment at the NRJ Music Awards

Prior to the big night, Bilal spoke about the awards on his YouTube channel. In fact, he revealed that if he won the award he’d be putting it in his all new kitchen. Looks like it’s getting a prime spot!

Earlier in the night, Bilal arrived at the scene in Cannes in a stunning dress. Designed by Dylan Parienty in Paris, the light blue dress was cinched at the waist to define his already well-defined figure. it included illusion cutouts running from the shoulders to his tiny waist, and a gorgeous train that looked like a puddle of water ebbing behind him. Summing it all up perfectly, French-Canadian singer Olivier Dion reacted on the post saying that “only the crown is missing”.

In an emotional speech at the awards reception, Bilal thanked the duo Madame Monsieur, who are part of the team behind Bilal’s success. They’ve developed a very close relationship, accompanying him to Eurovision and even the Wiwi Jam, and it seems their friendship will last for decades to come.

Destination Eurovision judge Vitaa also took home an award for performance of the night. Her performance of “Ça va ça vient” with Slimane saw her beat out some big names including Angèle and Aya Nakamura.

What do you make of Bilal’s award win? Will he be able to solidify his success in France? Let us know in the comments section down below!

He should also receive the prize for the most overhyped and overrated act in 2019 (or maybe of the decade)

I watched it live and even though I’m a big fan of eurovision, others acts like Maëlle or Trois Cafés Gourmands deserved more to win this award. I’m still happy for Bilal. He’s a nice person and this Award gives more job to the haters… I’m also happy that Angèle (belgian singer) won 2 Awards 🙂 Thx french neighbours!

Unfortunate. Always terrible when novelty acts win music awards.

You do have to remember that these awards are voted on by the French public, mostly young people. And as we all know from the results of DE 2019, Bilal has a huge base in France due to his status as a social media influencer so this comes as no surprise

That is if they have money to spare to send votes if it’s SMS-based.

Watched it live and was super excited when he got the award. There were some really great and famous artists running against him, but I think he deserved it
