Taking to the Melodifestivalen 2020 stage in semi-final two will be Chilean Swedish duo Méndez feat. Alvaro Estrella. They will bring fire and Latino flair to a cold day in Gothenburg with their entry “Vamos amigos” — come on, friends! We caught up with the dynamic duo at the Mello launch.
The stars are teaming up to “bring the party, the fire and the passion of Latin music” to Melfest, with Méndez promising that “you’ll get up from the couch at home when you see us on TV, you’ll not be able to sit still!”
We can’t wait to see what the pair have to offer!
Méndez is an old-hat at Melodifestivalen. As one of the first Latin American singers to make waves in the Scandinavian charts, he was the runner-up in Melodifestivalen 2002 with his entry “Adrenaline”. Méndez made a further appearance on the show in 2003 with “Carnaval”, and more recently in 2018 with “Everyday”.
Alvaro Estrella is another regular at Melodifestivalen, both competing solo at the contest in 2014 with “Bedroom”, as well as appearing alongside Danny Saucedo in 2012 as a backing singer and dancer for the much-loved entry “Amazing”. He also has Eurovision experience, being part of Eric Saade’s “Popular” posse in 2011, one of Sergey Lazarev’s backing singers at Eurovision 2016, part of Robin Bengtsson’s menswear quartet in 2017, and one of Alexander Rybak’s cheerful companions in 2018.
“Now we’ve doubled up, there’s not just one of us, there’s two of us up there. It’s going to be great, it’s going to be a really good party,” says Alvaro.
With Latin music dominating the charts across Europe over recent years, some may say we are enjoying a Golden Age of Latino music in Europe. However Méndez is quick to point out that Latin music has always been present in Europe, we just weren’t ready for it.
“We’ve always been here, for many years. It’s just we’ve got Spotify and Youtube now, so it’s easier to reach. But we”ve been doing this for years, decades, but now I”m so glad people know more about us and Latin music.”
Are you ready for Méndez and Alvaro Estrella to take you back to warm summer days with their fiery entry? Or are you hoping their track stays firmly in the heat of the semi-finals? Let us know in the comments!
