Elvana Gjata Eurovision 2020 Fik 58

The show ended over 24 hours ago. However, the reverberations of Sunday night’s Festivali i Këngës 58 result are still being felt in Tirana and beyond.

Albania’s Eurovision 2020 selection ended in controversy after local pop superstar and firm fan favourite Elvana Gjata finished second to Arilena Ara.

Mumblings of misgiving turned into a roar when it emerged that all three international jurors had awarded top marks to Elvana, only for her overall score to be dragged down by the two Albanian panellists.

Amidst the social media storm, the show’s host Alketa Vejsiu asked, via Instagram, for the focus to be on the jury and the voting system. Adding that she was left “speechless” by one juror’s decision to give “Me tana” just two points.

Shortly after midnight local time, Elvana reluctantly issued a statement of her own.

Elvana Gjata statement on Festivali i Këngës 58 result

Posting on Instagram, Gjata writes:

“I refuse to talk in these moments but I have to do it…

Arilena…it was not your fault honey, I really wish you the best of luck. I want to thank my fans and to my new European fans that supported me since #MeTana was published. I saw the polls, I saw that you were singing and dancing with my song every day, I saw you also in the arena with your hands up. I’ve heard you screaming my name all over the diaspora, Pristina, and heard it last night in Tirana like never before.

My heart is full of joy! I worked hard and will work until my last breath. Work never got me down, with or without order. Thank you so much for European jurors for voting with maximum points. Not even Mikaela’s 2 points can stop me giving love.

Accept life WITH EVERYTHING

Enjoy live WITH EVERYTHING

I can’t wait to share new projects”

The update quickly drew responses from fellow Albanian stars. Among them was Eneda Tarifa, Albania’s Eurovision 2016 singer and the recent winner of the country’s other big music festival — Kenga Magjike. She simply wrote “Bravo with everything”. Her brief message was accompanied by four crimson heart emojis.

What do you think? Were you one of Elvana’s cheerleaders? Are you excited for her new projects? Let us know in the comments.

Im not saying Arilenas song is bad, or that she is a bad singer. The problem lies in the mentality that if a director works on organizing the festival, they feel they have the power to choose the winner and ignore the public and the esteemed foreign jurors they invited for the event. In my country its hard being a fan of anything anymore, because everything is corrupt. Out National football team is filled with players that pay the most to the football federation, The only sportsmen who have a chance to compete at the olympic games are the ones… Read more »

It’s a similar dynamic but I’d say that Shaj is still a far superior song to Sister, but Me Tana is also much better than Wear Your Love. Albania may struggle to qualify but they won’t finish last in the semi- they seem like a borderline at the moment.

One thing is for sure, Elvana was a victim of Vera Grabocka’s dirty jobs. Vera’s intention was only and only to change the rules of the festival in order to make Arilena win and use Elvana as a ‘cloth’ for publicity and television audience increase. Festival had a very, very old rules, that it said, allowing only Albanian composers and authors to compose songs for FiK. Arilena, close friend of Vera too, only had her songs composed by Darko Dimitrov. So how can we make Arilena enter the festival? Simply, break the 58 years rule of the festival, because Vera… Read more »

Elvana was robbed by her own people. The corrupt Albanian TV people put in the jury 2 members who could be bribed. These 2 Albanian women who gave her 2 points only deserve to be thrown rocks into them on the public market… Shame, shame, shame….

Why would the other girl give up her win and performance in Rotterdam? Me Tana is a bit overrated. It’s not bad, it’s a great song, but it really sounds like music from Balkan countries that’s been around for so many years, like half a decade. It’s nothing new or that interesting. Neither is the winning song, but it won, and y’all should end it there.

Aribalena

So we should just accept that someone who strongly and publicly denounces Balkan style music was added to the jury at the last minute to influence the results? How about discounting her votes from the overall total on grounds that she was too biased against a certain style of music to act as a fair juror? Before juries are formed, the jurors must be vetted for impartiality, and based on what this woman has been saying over the past years about Balkan music, she can hardly be considered impartial.

There is nothing wrong to raise your voice against corruption and injustice.. there is nothing wrong to feel proud as an individual and as a nation when your singer’s song is liked by the rest of europe.. for balkan countries it may happen just once in a lifetime.. so.. Arliana rise above your ego, pull back and let Elviana go to Rotterdam, and you can represent Albania next year. No one loses, Albania gets max.

I think Arilena should give up the representation at Eurovision this year. I have the outmost respect for her as an artist and I worry that if she doesnt qualify (which is possible) she will have to carry this throughout her career as a stain, only because the corrupt organizers decided to do as they please, instead of carrying out the will of the public as well as the expert opinion of real eurovision professionals.

The applauses from the audience were from fans and not representative of the general feeling. The YouTube views on the other end tell a much different story. Nonetheless, just by a quick look at the Instagram postings from Arilena and Elvana after the show, the overwhelming majority of the Albanian music industry sided with Elvana and boycotted Arilena. This will indeed stain her career and she will be outcasted from the Albanian music industry in no time. She can go sing in Russia though.

One of the Albanian jurors confirmed for a night show hours ago that she rated Elvana Gjata low because she used dialects/slangs in her song and not the standard Albanian. “Me Tana” is a Northern albanian dialectic version of “Me të tëra” (standard Albanian) which means “With all of me/it”. The jury, the fact that Dimitrov who is the only one who writes songs for Arilena could take part after a change in rules, everything were calculated to send Arilena. If it was a private broadcaster people couldn’t do much. But now all this mess happens with tax payers money.

If a jury member voted a certain way due to corruption or out of malice, those are legitimate grounds to disqualify their scores. Why should the only consequence to an unfair vote be limited to just making a defiant statement? If it’s a manipulated result, there are mechanisms to making it right. Accepting the results with just a side note of discontent is the same as endorsing them.

Of course, everybody has the right to have his or her own opinion. The problem here is that 3 jurors ranked Elvana first and one did almost the complete opposite. So, if a majority (3 out of 5) choose Elvana on top, it’s hard to believe that one single person a) puts her almost last instead of giving her around 5, 6, 7 points and b) “ruins” the majority vote in a way. My suggestion for next year: 50% televote and 50% international jury, but with 5 “foreigners”.

To be honest, the people who will vote in Eurovision are INTERNATIONAL audience. People within the Albanian borders couldn’t vote for their country. Therefore, the organisers have to admit or push a statement about this matter. If international audience and juries like it, the song and the performances itself most likely will do well in ESC.

Remember last year a song with the same vibes, the same sound and the same composers reached top on jury votes (im talikng about macedonia 2019). That was a great reaction by Elvana (with a little shade to Mikaela, but it’s totally understandable). It was important to show her fans that Arilena is not the villain here. She’s focusing on the positive consequences of her participation in FiK. Her song is a hit, she increased her fanbase outside Albania. How many national finals’ runner-ups will be able to say the same? Besides the fact that people who really love music don’t do it to win contests, which is of course a nice bonus when it happens.

My happiness for Arilena is kind of fading now that it’s becoming more and more apparent that Elvana has become this year’s Laura. And it only took one person to do her in. ‘Me tana’ wasn’t my favorite, but there’s no way it deserved less than 10 points from a juror. With a bland, forgettable song you mean. Not to mention the song’s awful sorrowful lyrics that don’t make any sense. Georgia also sent the winner of X factor at Eurovision last year( they’re doing the same this year), but they didn’t qualify last year because of the weak song. And I’m not against ballads, to be clear. Jonida had a ballad, but an amazing one. Eugent also sent a rock ballad kinda, but that was a masterpiece. Arilena brings us back to the Pre-Eugent era of Lindita, Eneda and such. And it sucks!

So that jury member isn’t allowed their opinion? People need to understand that not everyone is going to like the same thing, this isn’t an injustice like people including Elvana are painting it as. Arilena got the most points from five indipendant jury votes, and she won. End of. People aren’t entitled to their favourite winning all the time, there are going to be times where your favourite doesn’t win. That is just life. I was supporting Kanita personally but you dont see me complaining that it was rigged and the eventual winner should be replaced. Acting like a petulant… Read more »

Maybe she just doesn’t like or even hates her song at all? I’ve seen someone rank Me Tana 16th in his/her top so that’s not really a sabotage

Still that’s not fair that 1 person person can have such a big impact on the result. They need to rethink their voting method.

If you don’t like the system, and the way Albania do things. Why watch it?

As a juror, I’d give her a fat zero – the type of song that I generally detest (why is it so hard for people to understand that there are other people with not necessarily the same taste?). To me, there were far better songs there (a surprisingly good edition of FiK, for that matter).

I don’t think Albania is looking for any Serbian Jurors, so keep dreaming LOL

You wish you were a juror, as the statement above. You said “as a juror”, that’s when your fantasy starts. Again, keep on dreaming, Albania is not looking for Serbian Jurors. Bye! haha

I don’t wish I was a juror – nor did I say so. I just said what I would do as a juror, which was just a way of expressing my criticism towards the song – and I would feel the same if the song came from my country or any other. I just don’t like that kind of music, why it is so hard to get?

Why do you have to express criticism in such a negative way?? Literally every post about Elvana you comment about how much you hate the song. Like calm down.

OK, let’s be constructive. How do you propose that I express criticism in a positive way?

Point out the aspects of the song you hate instead of saying that you would give it a ‘fat zero’ and you ‘generally detest’ it. That’s not constructive. Say that you find it too repetitive, or lacking emotion, or whatever you think it lacks, just in a positive way. For example, I believe Shaj is a very good ballad, but lacks excitement and originality, despite having fabulous vocals.

The winner has good voice, however honestly if you listen to the meaning of lyrics ,it is so forgettable and sorrowful. I am fluent in the language and cant even tell you what they are because the lyrics are dreadful. The winner literally said she cried, felt unhappy and had anxiety with this song. Best choice is change the song or do a recount by only having the public vote only.

That’s complete bs answer, because I don’t think you understand that she didn’t just win a contest, she won the right to represent us in way bigger stage which if we are to win it raises the economy and the singer’s status. So yea it is a big and also not to mention this is the second festival in less than 2 months in which votes have been contested by the public. Music shouldn’t have this form of corruption , it should be the most free form of speech of expression. This outcome is a validation of other corrupted schemes… Read more »

class? “Arilena, is not your fault, honey”. To me she sounds like a kardashian. It is nobody’s fault, cause there is no pain: it was a competition and someone won and somone lost. Where is the fault? Where is the pain?

There is nothing wrong to raise your voice against corruption and injustice.. there is nothing wrong to feel proud as an individual and as a nation when your singer’s song is liked by the rest of europe.. for balkan countries it may happen just once in a lifetime.. so..

that says a lot about elvana, cause she had years and years of career. in fact is her second time in kenges, last time it was in 2000 and something. She is not such a big deal as this month some eurofans have tried to put her on. She has spent years and years trying to make her place in albanian music, and even as she is known, she is not as known as arilena, this one with just a couple of years of musical career. There you can see when somone is built to something and when they are… Read more »

Arilena has only one song, “Nëntori”. With this song she reached international fame but her others song aren’t so famous (Aeroplan, Toke rroke, Nallane perhaps in Albania, all others no) . Elvana is called Albanian pop diva, every song she has made, has reached top 5 on albanian hitparades. Everyone can look at the views, Elvana’s success is bigger( apart that most of her songs were made in the time that YouTube was not very used in Albania). Every song of her is a big hit in Albania, Kosovo and Diaspora. She has reached success aboard not as much as… Read more »

I agree. Not having Me tana as your first favorite is okay. I would probably put her song third if I was in a jury. Tastes differ. However, saying she was second to last in terms of quality is questionable.

This girl is a gem. So succesfull in her career with millions of views, and yet she decided to compete among others to represent her country with a self created song. She had more to loose than to win and she took the risk just cause she wanted to represent her country. I respect her for that. She shouldnt feel sad because a juror decided to stop her from winning. Giving 2 points to this perfomance is a joke.

yes, but she is credited as the songwriter which means she put effort not only on perfoming but also on creating the song. Not every singer does that
