2019 songs eurovision artists 50 to 41

Incredibly, 2019 is almost up. And that means one thing — the return of our annual Top Tracks countdown!

As usual, the team from wiwibloggs voted for their favourite 2019 releases and recordings by and featuring Eurovision stars. Songs which competed at Eurovision or national finals were excluded (they’ve been analysed to death in our jury reviews), as were artists who have yet to compete on the Eurovision stage.

After considering well over 100 songs, we finally settled on our top 50. And now we’re ready to share it with y’all. We’ll publish ten tracks daily between now and New Year’s Day.

What song will enter our Hall of Fame?

Let the countdown commence!

Songs by Eurovision artists in 2019: Our top tracks (50 to 41)

50. NAVIBAND “Galileo (Dva Cheloveka)”

What we said: NAVIBAND have long since binned the cutsie folk styling which brought them to the Eurovision 2017 final. However, their essence remains intact, even on a track as cool as this. Oozing with modern beats and a slick melody, it could comfortably sit atop any radio chart. However, the upbeat chants of “Galileo” give it the distinctly NAVIBAND flavour that fans have come to love. (Padraig)

Previous top tracks: “Biazy” (#27 in 2017)

49. Aminata “Dzīvot Citādāk”

What we said: “A Latvian-language electronic-rock track that presents an interesting mix of two worlds. We know Aminata for her soulful power-pop tracks, while Tautumeitas are a contemporary folk group. Nevertheless, this blend has proven to be effective, because the track is simply stunning.

For the first half of the song, Aminata sings alone. Tautumeitas subsequently takes the role of a choir and carry the song during the second half. The track culminates with a powerful climax, as the seven voices form a wonderful harmony. (Ari)

Previous top tracks: “Don’t Talk About It” (#31 in 2018), “Zero Love” (#45 in 2018), “Prime Time” (#23 in 2017), “Fighter” (#15 in 2016), “Red Moon” (#34 in 2016)

48. Eleni Foureira “Triumph”

What we said: An uptempo dance track. It’s a banger perfect for clubs all over Europe, with its thumping beats and catchy chorus. Better still, the lyrics are all in English, giving the song even greater potential for international success. In the same vein as Eleni’s other empowering lyrics, ‘Triumph’ encourages everyone — from beauty queens to “in-betweens” — to just OWN IT and live life like it’s “a holiday”. We’re sure it will have you getting those dancing shoes on and brushing off your worries, because as Eleni says, “it ain’t your problem anyway”. (Alice)

Previous top tracks: “Tómame” (#3 in 2018), “Caramela” (#22 in 2018)

47. Anouk “It’s A New Day”

What we said: “It’s A New Day” has a powerful and strong message behind it. Although the lyrics itself are not very original, with “It’s a new day” repeated frequently, the accompanying music video takes it to another level. In it we see Anouk portraying a series of iconic women. (Mike)

Previous top tracks: “Hold Me” (#28 in 2015), “New Day” (#42 in 2015), “Places To Go” (#21 in 2014), “You & I” (#32 in 2014), “Kill” (#2 in 2013), “Wigger” (#12 in 2013)

46. Miki  Núñez “Celébrate”

What we said: The anthem channels the best ska-pop of the region, and is a refreshing return to Miki’s familiar sounds from Operación Triunfo. In the video clip, Miki takes the drivers seat in a blue Volkswagen, driving along the countryside – with friends in the back and music to be made. Miki surfs in a shopping trolley, scores in beach football and enjoys some male bonding at the beach, showing he’s here to have fun and live a little. (Sebastian)

45. ALEKSEEV “Tseluy”

What we said: “A dark pop tune with a pulsing beat that easily gets under your skin. Although his Eurovision effort was more ballad-oriented, listeners definitely have a greater ability to move and dance along with the chorus of this latest song. Alekseev shows off his versatility as an artist further during the second verse, which takes the form of a rap”. (Jonathan)

Previous top tracks: “Сберегу” (#42 in 2018)

44. Bilal Hassani feat. Alkpote “Monarchie Absolue”

What we said: This unexpected collaboration arose in response to shade — after Bilal won Destination Eurovision 2019, a petition was launched for Alkpote to take his place. And thus both performers crossed paths and “Monarchie Absolue” was born. The dark number is a change in pace compared to Hassani’s unambivalently hopeful “Roi”. Equal parts gritty R&B and chart-friendly pop, it acts to highlight Bilal’s versatility and creativity as an artist, suggesting he’s in it for the long haul. (Padraig)

43. Franka “Sve Dok Sanjaš”

What we said: She’s been a major player on the Croatian music scene since 2007. But it was only in autumn 2019 that Franka scored her first number one in the charts. And this was the track that did it. “Sve Dok Sanjaš” is a simple piano ballad, that wonderfully showcases the Eurovision 2018 songstress’ soaring vocals. The dreamy number appropriately translates as “All While You Dream”. (Padraig)

42. Jessica Mauboy “Little Things”

What we said: Lyrically, the song discusses how the Australian singer is trying to keep a relationship alive, but her partner continually fails to reciprocate this effort, singing: “I make big things out of little things, and I watch you keep missing them”. (Florian)

41. Madame Monsieur feat. Kyo “Les lois de l’attraction”

What we said: “Les lois de l’attraction” sees the duo team up with French band Kyo. The result is a catchy guitar-driven track that blends Émilie’s vocals perfectly with Benoît Poher (the lead vocalist of Kyo). (Florian)

Previous top tracks: “Comme Une Reine” (#6 in 2018)

Our Top Tracks of 2019 ranking is determined by independent votes from a panel of wiwibloggers. They are William, Robyn, Jonathan, Antranig, Pablo, Cinan, Florian, Ari, Mario, Tom and Padraig.

My favorites of this bunch: Naviband, Aminata and Madame Monsieur. And it’s good to see that Miki is doing well, I just love his vibe.

I like the custom of following artists’ careers after ESC. Once an ESC family, they always are. That’s nice.

I don’t expect ByeAlex to show up in this Wiwi lists (as usual) but he had a great year in Hungary with so many Top Hits there. He has such a solid career since Kedvesem.
It’s sort the same with Jala Brat. So many Bops every year dominating the Balkans but whatever.

At least I hope Cleo will show up with “Za krokiem Krok”. It did great in Poland and she deserves it

I’m a simple person: I see Alekseev, I click. “Tseluy” and the last one were amazing singles, but “Kak ty tam” was his perfect song this year.

I really love “It’s A New Day”. It’s got a wonderful retro vibe, Anouk’s vocals are simply terrific, she brings that Nina Simone realness and she just nailed the music video. I feel like 47th position is way too low.

Out of these I love: Naviband’s, Aleeksev’s, Anouk’s, Aminata’s, but my favourite has to be Jessica Mauboy’s song, it’s so pleasant and with a deep message.
