Lithuania – Jurij Veklenko

It’s a new year and Lithuania has a new roster of participants for their Eurovision 2020 national selection. On Friday broadcaster LRT revealed the 36 acts who will compete in Eurovizijos Atranka 2020 with the hope of securing a spot at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam.

There are plenty of familiar names here. Lithuanian pop diva Aiste Pilvelyte is going to make her 12th appearance in the Eurovizijos Atranka — this time with the song “Everlastingly”. This isn’t a surprise. In December she told 15min.lt: “I am working with good and life-tested composers.” Despite a very busy schedule and questions over whether it was practical, she was determined to make this work: “It would be kind of stupid not to try again.”

Another familiar name? Twosome with the song “Playa”. Speaking to 15 min in 2019, the band said that their song will include the phrase “I am Lithuanian” and that it will intertwine “modern and Lithuanian folk rhythms,” They say they “don’t need to be sad” so expect something cheeky and entertaining.

Alen Chicco is also back. beloved for his expressive voice and sense of theatricality, he’ll no doubt pull out all the stops — and some OTT costumes — as he sings “Somewhere Out There”. We’re sure it’s very out there indeed!

Monika Marija — the pre-contest favourite last year — is returning as well. And this time she’s made the wise decision to enter just one song. Last year she ultimately withdrew her entry “Criminal” from Euvovizijos Atranka. That was to ensure she could focus on her other entry “Light On” and not risk splitting her vote. Fans were bemused by the situation — many thought “Criminal” was a better song.

I do feel rather sorry for Lithuania because they are the baltic state yet to win. I’m afraid that after this years contest they still will be.

You haven’t even heard 27 remaining songs. They had their shot last year had they picked Light On. Just my opinion, maybe.

I wouldn’t say it’s weak, I really like it, but I question if it’s competitive enough to stand out? It’s stronger than “Run with the Lions” though

You must be joking…. Sorry it’s off topic but just heard the shocking news that the UK has internally selected Boy George as this years contestant. Is this a wind up.

The source is very reliable. It’s his agent. Or was it Andrew Ridgely. May as well be.

Of course it’s not true. Fancy having a washed up has-been that hasn’t had a chart hit in years representing the UK. Like that’s ever going to happen.

Alen Chicco has a huge potential, I hope his song is good. Just listened to Gabrielius’ track and already liked it, even if it’s not exactly an earworm. I can see it growing when performed live, his voice is great.

And Monika Marija… well, Monika Marija was supposed to be my winner AND the runner-up in Eurovizijos Atranka last year. So it’s hard not to be hyped about her.

I definitely think Evgenya Redko could be the dark house of the competition because all her songs on Spotify are very good quality and her music videos on YouTube are flawless. Plus she shows she can sing live well on one of her videos on YouTube. I guess it will be how good the song will be however I suspect it will be very good!

Really interesting line-up. It’s time to start my 3rd annual list, I see. EA is usually very diverse and interesting. I’ll comment on those I am familiar with (even though I am sure there will be those I am not acquainted with which will just get my attention after all the songs are out): – Monika Marija – My last year’s winner. Not only of EA, but of NF season altogether! OF COURSE that I have very high expectations, but I want to stay realistic and first hear If I Leave. I am pretty sure it will at least be… Read more »

Thanks! 🙂 Now I’ve listened to all four songs which are already out (Gabrielius, Andy Vaic, Ruta Loop, Aika). I think only these four are available online. but if you find another one, please share.

I would say these 4 entries are a good start. Gabrielius, Ruta and Aika all have very playlistable songs. I can see the first 2 growing on me with time. Even Andy’s song, which is too repetitive to my taste, is OK.

I agree that these four songs are a solid start. I really like Gabrielius’ and Andy’s songs. Both have great lyrics and messages. Aika and Ruta also have fine songs. If this is the standard, we are up for a good show. I just really hope there are also some comedic acts in the mix. Lithuania can do them really well (Pusvalanduko, Hello, Mažule).

Lithuanian NF artists tend to release their songs in different times, the 11th of January being the final mandate for those who participate in heat 1 and so on. Perhaps a number of them is already online. We have to google them one by one, since I don’t think there is a playlist.

There’s some exciting names coming back!
One I’m probably looking forward to a bit more than others will is Voldemars Petersons. His song really grew on me last year and a similar performance would make me happy!
