After a month of various clues and endless speculation, the Czech broadcaster has finally revealed the seven contestants in their internet based national final ESCZ 2020. The selection has its own slogan #UnfoldYourDream. Barbora Mochowa and Pam Rabbit are returning to compete from last year’s edition. The songs will be released on January 20 and the online voting will commence!

For those of you who have been following the selection in recent years, two names will pop up — Barbora Mochowa and Pam Rabbit. Barbora was a strong fan favorite with her Lana Del Rey style ballad “True Colors”. Pam brought some cool beats with “Easy to Believe”.

Czech Listeners are, however, more familiar with Olga Lounová and Ben Cristovao. Both of them have garnered millions of views for their songs, which are mainly in the Czech language. Olga is know both for singing happy and fun songs as well as touching tunes. Ben Cristovao is one of the most popular rappers in the Czech Republic. Though his genre is not so popular at Eurovision, he definitely has it in him to change that.

Then we have Karelll, who is a relatively new to the Czech music scene, but who has already managed to reach audiences with his modern production and interesting pop songs.

There’s also a duo in the form of Elis Mraz and Cis T. Elis is a Czech pop singer with her own style and she’s teamed up with Cis T, who is a Slovak rapper. This could be a really interesting international cooperation.

Last but not least is a new born band We All Poop. It seems that these four guys have made a band just for ESCZ and with such a name they will get instant attention. I guess we now know whose genre is “planned coincidence punk pop”.

ESCZ 2020 Finalists

  • Olga Lounová
  • Barbora Mochowa
  • Ben Cristovao
  • Pam Rabbit
  • Karelll
  • Elis Mraz & Cis T
  • We All Poop

I’m sure the EBU won’t have a problem with it, as it’s not like the EBU members don’t poop… Lol. We all do! #Relatable 🙂 Plus, they didn’t have an issue with the Trackshittaz in 2012 (although fair enough, Europe clearly did!… ‘Woki mit deim popo’ deserved a way better placing than what it got. Off-topic: I yearn for the days when Austria sent risky and entertaining acts, like a hip-hop duo, a bearded lady, and a girl singing in French, as opposed to their more safe, jury-bait, internally selected entries of late. Bring back the national final, Austria!).

Elis sounds IMHO too much like an attempt to sound as Netta “Toy”. Too much alike. Even the same RRRR accent. I don’t like it. Olga is better but has just quite an ordinary Eurovision song.

Also what’s everyone’s deal with We All Poop? Why is a joke entry necessarily a problem? Joke entries have always been a great and much loved part of Eurovision, we all need a bit of fun that doesn’t take itself seriously!

I don’t even think they are gonna be a joke entry lol, just a really whacky one like Greece 2013, Romania 2013 or Moldova 2010

They seem like a relatively legit band. Plenty of good bands and artists have weird names. Just look at Eurovision. How many pop stars do you know named Boggy, Trackshittaz, or Dustin the Turkey?

Yeah I have checked out the drummer and guitarist’s Instagram and they are pretty good so I don’t really think it’s going to be a joke. A lot of punk bands have a laughable band name.

The lyrics were a bit of a joke but the song itself was kinda enjoyable plus it’s obvious that unlike the joke entries like Iceland 2006 or Estonia 2008 they actually cared about the contest, so no, they weren’t a joke entry.

I don’t understand how being a joke entry and a good song are mutually exclusive. There are good songs deliberately done as a joke (Ukraine 2007 comes as an example). Then there are abysmal songs which were never meant to be taken as a joke. Bulgaria 2009 is one of those. It was intended to be taken seriously and failed at it with a bang. But cool if it has fans. These downvotes come from somewhere. Still, I retract nothing I said.
Anyway, I 100% disagree with Georgia 2016 being bad and I didn’t downvote you.

Such a shame that Czecho-Slovakia didn’t participate in Eurovision when this federation existed, I mean in their last years.
Anyway, as a Slovak, I Wish to Czech republic a lot of success in the contest, hope that our countries meet there one day and will exchange some points. Love you!

I’m really happy to see Ben Cristovao here! I’ve never expected him to be interested in Eurovision. (He nearly sold out O2 Arena in Prague in 2019!).
And also Olga Lounová, she is very famous.

I’m from the Czech Republic and for me I really hope that Olga has a good song, she even lived in the US for some time. But the We All Poop band… they created the band one day before the beginning of national final and it just seems like they want to troll. I would prefer to have only contestants that are serious about Esc, but I don’t want to judge maybe their song is good, lol.

There’s no way whatsoever that the CZESC would have let them in the national final had they only been a joke entry. Not after the successes of the last two years with Jan Bors declaring “we wanna put Czechia on the Europe’s music map”.

Solid line up. Ben is one of the biggest stars on our music scene – this is great for Eurovision in CZ. Although it’s likely he will be the clear televote winner. Olga is also popular and ?is T is very popular Slovak rapper, quite known in CZ too.

I feel when Czech Repulblic put a band with that name in: Do really Czech Republic want to be in ESC? If they dont want its easy to leave. Just be in to be in is not a good reason. Montenegro was a country like that i felt. They were there but they didnt care much i felt. Some kind of passion its needed to.

Even if it’s a mediocre song , maybe they were just put in to spread a word/diversity. Calling their entire efforts into question just based on one act is amateurish .

Acts not serious about ESC have gone on to win ESC. So nothing is a given

I think their name is pretty darn good and intellectual, actually. For me, it shows that they have a sense of humor, are relatable (as defecating is universal), and they do not think too highly of themselves, nor feel a sense of superiority to others (at the end of the day, no matter who you are, we all have things about ourselves that are considered “dirty”, “bad”, “negative”, and “unappealing”, and so we shouldn’t feel as if we are better than anyone else… Whether you ate dinner at a Michelin star restaurant, or what you received from begging on the… Read more »

As a Slovak person i am surprised that Ben Cristivao will be a part of national selection, i would never expected him be here, he is kind of Eltana (from Albanian national selection) but of cource not that huge …and he has got angolan heritage, he was also in Czechoslovak superstar (i think with Gabriela Guncikova 2016) but i am not sure exatly ….

Pam Rabbit should win, her music is dope, I’ve listened to her other songs and they’re all such a departure from “Easy to Believe”, I wonder why she chose that song to compete for last year’s spot. Plus, she is apparently very popular in Czech Republic which is why she won the televote last year when everyone else thought Barbora already had it in the bag. All this buzz for Barbora to win again this year really won’t matter if the Czechs don’t feel the same way.

I’m curious about the name choice for We all poop, but if it is done purely strategical, then that was a smart choice because now everyone talks about it, and people might even vote for it because they want to see that name appear at the big Eurovision event in May 😀

I just realised that besides their name and Barbora I haven’t even looked at the other names due to the distracting name
