It’s an essential part of the Eurovision experience for fans travelling to the contest. And now it’s been confirmed that the Eurovision Village for 2020 will be located in the Binnenrotte district of Rotterdam.
Said Kasmi — the city’s councillor for culture — announced the location during Tuesday’s semi-final allocation draw.
What is the Eurovision Village?
The Eurovision Village is an official location in the host city where fans of the song contest can gather. They’ll have access to free performances from several of their favorite artists — including Eurovision stars from both the past and present.
It also broadcasts the three live shows on big screens, perfect for those who missed out on tickets but still want to enjoy an authentic Eurovision experience.
What is the Binnenrotte?
The Binnenrotte is a square in the center of Rotterdam, known for its unique buildings. The most famous of these include the Markthal and the yellow cubic houses.
In other big cities, you might also come across a covered market hall. But what makes Rotterdam’s Markthal unique is that there are actual houses inside the market hall.
The name of the cubic house already betrays it: it is a dwelling in the shape of a cube. People actually live in these houses, but it is also possible to visit them.
Binnenrotte as the Eurovision village
RTV Rijnmond spoke with Kasmi about the choice of Binnenrotte.
According to the city councilor, it is the most suitable place for accommodating a large number of visitors.
However, the market traders who operate on the square were initially skeptical. Kasmi explains: “We are having a good conversation with the market traders. The market will continue as usual, but everyone has to move a little. That is the result of hosting such a beautiful, beautiful party”.
The municipality of Rotterdam has stated that the market on the Binnenrotte will be moved to other parts of the city centre next May. This measure is necessary to enable the arrival of the Eurovision Village.
The city also wants to minimise any inconveniences for local residents and businesses.
The exact programme will be announced soon.
Many of the 260 ideas that came from Rotterdam’s inhabitants for activities during the Eurovision Song Contest should also become known.

It will be my first esc and i have a question …..maybe it will be stupid ..anyway : this will be a free access zone ? I mean if i dont get tickets tommorow and on the last wave am i sure to be able to watch it on the big screens there with all the fans ?
Yes, eurovillage is free. Be sure to use lots of devices tomorrow! 😉 Or gather round your family by force.
Thx a lot …fingers crossed 😉
What is the capacity? Do we think it will allow most demand?
The funny local nickname for De Binnenrotte (the square) is the “landing strip for airplanes”. Because it is so big, long and empty on days that there is no open market, that airplanes could land there xD
But yeah I think it is big enough 😀 otherwise they can extend the Village to the neighbouring pedestrian streets
Great! Use to work there and now I work opposite Ahoy.. All so close.. Can’t wait 🙂
Another good thing to mention: the accessibility; it is right in the city center with a main metro and train station under the square. Especially for visitors who want to see both the Village and Ahoy, or who stay in a hotel outside Rotterdam this location might be very convenient.
