On the eve of semi-final four of Norway’s newly expanded Melodi Grand Prix 2020, the fourth pre-qualified entry has been released. Ulrikke Brandstorp’s “Attention” dropped just after midnight local time on Friday 31 January.

The song will receive its live premiere during the fourth semi-final of MGP 2020. However, unlike the other four performing acts, Ulrike won’t need to compete for a spot in the final.

She’ll only be showcasing the track as she’s a guaranteed finalist.

Ulrikke Brandstorp “Attention” (Melodi Grand Prix 2020)

Ulrikke made it to the MGP super final in 2017 with her song “Places”. There she placed fourth. Last year Ulrikke reached the grand final of the celebrity singing show Stjernekamp.

Songwriters: Christian Ingebrigtsen, Kjetil Mørland and Ulrikke Brandstorp

Speaking to wiwibloggs at the first artist reveal for MGP 2020, Ulrikke shared the meaning of the song:

“The song is actually kind of a question, I ask myself and all of you, why do we do stupid things for love to get the attention of another person? Sometimes love hurts. And we do it all over again! So the song is about that.”

Melodi Grand Prix 2020: Semi-Final Four

The fourth MGP 2020 semi will see five artists perform.

Four of these are competing for a spot in the final. A series of “duels” will take place until one qualifier remains. Each act represents Western Norway.

The semi-final four contenders are:

  • Hege Bjerk “Pang”
  • Magnus Bokn “Over the Sea”
  • Nordic Tenors “In This Special Place”
  • Oda Loves You “Love Who We Love”

The acts competing in the last semi have yet to be confirmed. However, we do know the other pre-qualified finalists. They are:

  • Tone Damli “Hurts Sometimes”
  • Sondrey “Take My Time”
  • Didrik & Emil Solli-Tangen “Out Of Air”
  • Akuvi “Som du er”

They’ll be joined by the winners of each semi, the first of three of which are Raylee with “Wild”, Rein Alexander with “One Last Time” and Kristin Husøy with “Pray For Me”.

What do you think of “Attention”? Is it a deserving pre-qualified entry? Let us know in the comments below.

This is such a pleasant surprise. If paired with a good staging and if she delivers vocally, I would not be bothered if this represents Norway this May. A Top 10 placement (at least) is assured for this song.

Wow. This is top 10 material- PLEASE give this good staging. The best song so far, with Akuvi in second place imo.

Wow… ok this song is definitely my choice to qualify! If she goes to ESC, she’s definitely a top 10 finalist, minimum (imho).

This is AMAZING. The best song Norway has had so far and one of the best songs released in the Eurovision season. We still haven’t heard Tone or the Northern Norway songs, but as of right now this is my winner. This would easily be top ten in Rotterdam, probably even higher. I hope Ulrikke has the voice to pull it off live.

Might be my personal favourite of the nf season so far, although I have a feeling that this could benefit from having a rather mysterious and toned-down live performance like Lisa Ajax last year and not a sea of sparkle that I feel it’s going to be.

Omg! I love this so much!! When she can pull this off live this could be a strong contender for top 5 in Rotterdam!

Can’t say it’s love at first listen, but I like it. In terms of ambition, this entry is playing on its own league in MGP. Possibly the first song that could score high both with juries and televote. Now it’s the matter of checking how well Ulrikke will connect with the viewers. After all, the whole song is about begging for attention.

Right, first of all, it’s really good. It’s possibly the best song that’s going to the final so far. Still, I expected more considering that it’s Ulrikke and it’s got Morland involved. I was hoping potential ESC top 10 but, at this moment, that’s not the level I’m finding the song.
I’m really torn! I want to be happy but I just can’t. ;;

This is what we’ve been waiting for! With good vocals and staging, I would definitely bet my money on this entry for the win of MGP 2020! If I compare this song to earlier editions of Eurovision Song Contest, I honestly think this is top 10 material. But obviously that depends on her vocals. Ulrikke participated in a Norwegian TV-show called “Stjernekamp” in 2018 and got 2nd place, so we know that her vocals will be great. And of course, we can’t forget her ear-pleasing song “Places” from MGP 2017. As a Norwegian, I’m very satisfies by this entry, and… Read more »

Beautiful song! If Norway send this to Rotterdam, it will be a sure qualifier (jury bait) and with a good emotional staging it can appeal a lot televoters too..

I was really hoping this would be it for me, seeing as how Mørland is involved, but it’s not getting me there. I suppose it’s partly because it sounds a bit too needy to me, lyrically, but also because it doesn’t build as much as I would have hoped. Having said that, I can hear Mørland’s positive influence and it is by far the best Norwegian offer so far. I would pick it, for now.

If Ulrikke pulls this off live this can be great. This is a pre qualifier who definitely deserves that status (although Akuvi is good too). This is beautiful. Polished yet emotional.

Think MGP were saving the best two for last in terms of automatic qualifiers (assuming Tone has a good song as the most established artist competing)
