Blas Cantó will represent Spain at Eurovision 2020 with his song “Universo”, which the national broadcaster selected internally from among 50 songs. Blas composed “Universo” himself along with Dan Hammond, Dangelo Ortega, Maciej Mikolaj Trybulec and Ashley Hicklin.

Spain in Eurovision 2020: Blas Cantó with “Universo”
Blas Cantó is one of Spain’s most popular pop singers, and has been releasing music for almost a decade — first as part of the band Auryn, which tried to represent Spain at Eurovision in 2011, and then as a solo performer.
His music career began as a kid, when he entered Spain’s Eurojunior 2004, at the age of 13 years old. He came second behind María Isabel, who went on to win all of Junior Eurovision. Sixteen years later, Blas’ opportunity to shine at Eurovision has finally arrived.
He has released several singles both in English and Spanish. “Él no soy yo” racked up 67 million views on Youtube, while “No volveré”, “In your bed” and “Si te vas” have over two million views each.
What do the “Universo” lyrics mean?
Blas’ lyrics reveal the inner battles that he — and so many of his listeners — face as they try to lead authentic lives. “Universo” speaks about how the singer erases who he is and acts like somebody else out of a deep-seated fear. It’s not lost on him. The reckoning comes when he’s alone and the noise of the world fades. “All that I hide when I’m scared comes to reality inside this silence,” he sings.
In the chorus he asks the universe to show him mercy for hiding a part of himself: “Forgive me, universe, for silencing my voice so as to not feel guilty for who I am.”
The lyrics of “Universo” are very open to interpretation. What secret is Blas hiding? What parts of himself is he worried about sharing with the world? Could he be afraid to show his vulnerabilities to the person he loves most?

I believe he is singing about being LGBT
My favourite song so far this year, love it !!!
With decent staging, and if Blas can perform this live on the night this can actually be a good year for Spain, I just hope that the Spanish broadcaster doesn’t fail him with staging like what Miki fell victim to last year,
I just love everything from the spanish entry this year, really promising, with a good stage can be the big surprise in Rotterdam this year.very inteligent to put out the video now, because is that type of songs that when more listen more love it,amazing.
All that music you list came from latin america. Colombia, México, even USA… Spain consume that music of course, like the whole world does, but is not “spanish music”, even thought they have spanish lyrics… The same way you could differenciate between swedish pop, british pop and US pops, as example, you should also understand the difference between spanish music and latin american music.
I love the song even more
His would be a filler song on an album. You need the lead single to have a chance to make an impact at ESC. Unless the staging is terrific than this song has no chance but to be near the bottom of the scoreboard.
it actually would be the launch single of his new album, thought.
I like the shiny dancers in the video, the song is in offensive and generic and its fate will rest on his tonsils and stage presence.
I get it. He wishes he had a deep song.
The thing about Alfred is that everytime he sang it, it was different. Knowning his anxiety problems during OT, I guess it was the matter of he being comfortable or not with the situation. Amaia’s consistency made it much more noticeable to me.
The lyrics are OK, but the song would benefit from having more verses between the chorus, giving us a better idea of why he’s asking the universe for forgiveness. It would also make the chorus sound less repetitive.
A mi me gusta bastante y Blas sabe actuar en directo excelente.
this song is so bland
bottom 3 in the final
He is a great performer and has an amazing voice live. The song is repetitive, but is definitively a fast grower too! Three times and goes from boring to loving it.
It’s a bit confusing because this is probably the best that TVE has delivered in many, many years song and production wise. And yet it has been given the coldest reception I can remember 2017 excluded, both abroad and inside Spain. Hope there’s room for positive surprises.
It will have good staging .
The song is not bad at all.
But i have a little problem with the parts when he sings with the high notes.
Come on, we all know that between 25 other songs few will remember a Spanish boy singing uni universo uni universo. A revamp can save this
This is going to be big. I can feel with the great staging and a stellar performance this could be their best result since 2010. It’s modern catchy.
So yeah maybe its gay stuff but honestly I didn’t have that impression until I read comments here. Maybe people assume a lot of thighs. Whenever any guy shows up people discuss whether he’s gay or not. But yeah other than that song doesn’t seems to make much sense. I mean even if he is, what does he apologise universe for? Do you think that “universe” gives a damn xd yeah that sounds monumental (?) tyat I can’t take it seriously, good thing that I don’t know spanish so i won’t hear it this way
is a way of speak , dude. Is like: forgive me, God. forgive me for being so weak and not loving myself. And it actually is an apology to himself. is like “man, if i would act honest with myself i would be happier”. “If i didnt hide because of fear i would have enjoy better my life, and when i return to my home and i am alone i would not feel this sadness”. Is like , in the process of lying others in rother to hide what you are or what you like, you end lying to yourself.… Read more »
I really like this entry. So much better than 2017-2019 for me <3 I would forgive you everything, Blas 😀
I mean some gay people are married and adopted kids
Sorry, I missed punchline xd
I’m staying positive for this one
It’s catchy, so it can easily become a grower and it’s not a bad song
A good staging and they might not end up in the bottom as people say
Ester Peony said Hey 38 times I guess.
I don’t know why people love to hate Universo.
Boring and bland. Sounds like Spains entries that placed 20th and lower in the past
I cant see this song on the better place like 22 (ESDM, Soraya, Manel and Lucia had worst songs actually)
It’s normal that you can’t see cuz we only have one and half song knowing already that Albania is going to finish low
Don’t care about the lyrics. I just hoped it doesn’t sound like a formula song but sadly it does.
The visuals in the music video are stunning, so I can imagine the staging will be just as eye pleasing too! Shame about the song being so bland though, WHERES THE FLAVOR?
Blas: Hey universe I’m gay but I won’t tell you straight away
Great concept if true, but sadly it doesn’t change the content of the music.
The universe hasn’t unlocked his backstory yet.
