Hanna Ferm Melodifestivalen 2020

It’s one of the biggest selections of the Eurovision season. And Saturday night’s Melodifestivalen 2020 premiere was not short on spectacle… and shock!

Despite finishing second in 2018 and leading the betting odds, FELIX SANDMAN failed to go direct to the final. And as a result, the bookies have a new number one — Hanna Ferm.

Melodifestivalen 2020 Odds: Hanna Ferm favourite to win

The “Brave” songstress is currently trading on Unibet at odds of 4.00. That’s a significant narrowing on her initial odds of 7.00.

We won’t hear Hanna’s song for another three weeks, but there are several other reasons why punters may be backing her. She finished third in the 2019 competition while her songwriting team is made up of heavy-hitters such as Jimmy Jansson and Laurell Barker. Furthermore, she’s performing last in semi-final four – a slot that’s often considered to be reserved for potential winners.

Melodifestivalen 2020: Other favourites

Hanna may have the shortest odds, but there are several acts jostling for the top spot.

The Mamas have rocketed from tenth in our last update to second place. “Move” proved to be a joyous season opener and has been well-received across the board. The trio are currently trading at odds of 8.5.

Two acts are in joint third — Robin Bengtsson and Paul Rey can both be backed at 9.0. Robin impressed in semi one, securing his place in the final. Nonetheless, the odds of “Take A Chance” winning Mello 2020 remain static.

On the other hand, Rey has climbed from ninth. Like Hanna, we’ve yet to hear his song, but oddsmakers are clearly expecting big things from the Melfest debutant.

The top five is rounded out by Estonia’s 2019 representative Victor Crone. As with the majority of the field, the “Storm” crooner’s entry has yet to be released. But his odds are already beginning to drift from 7.5 to 10.0.

FELIX SANDMAN can be found at nine — behind Mariette, Mohombi and Anna Bergendahl. His odds have tumbled from 4.5 to 18.0. Bookmakers are definitely losing confidence in a “Boys With Emotions” victory.

Dotter completes the top ten.

It’s important to note that we obviously haven’t heard most of the songs yet, and these odds are driven partly by hype.

That said, bookies and oddsmakers do keep their ears-to-the-ground and often have insight from songwriters and officials close to (and even inside) SVT. Sometimes their crystal balls are based on facts that the rest of us simply don’t know about. The only problem is it’s hard to know when they’re on it and when they’re not…

Melodifestivalen 2020 Bookmakers’ Odds – 2 February Update

  1. Hanna Ferm 4.0
  2. The Mamas 8.5
  3. Paul Rey 9.0

To be honest, when I read who the semi finalists are and their song titles, the most powerful title was – Brave.

These odds are going to g up and down until the night of the melfest final. i think felix and hanna will still be the top 2 contenders for the win, with the mamas hopefully somewhere in there

Why are you so certain Felix will be a top contender? There is nothing pointing to that.. He didn’t win the semi, he had a weak performance, he wasn’t convincing enough, the song was more jury bait than televote, shaky voice. None of it spelled a winning performance. So curious why you think he has a chance?..
By this stage I am even convinced he wont make it past Andra Chansen, unless he completely changes the staging.!

He didn’t win the semi last time either and look where he got in the end. I think his song needs a bit of growing, considering that we didn’t hear the full song until saturday and didn’t have time to process it before we had to vote. I think he will get to the finals eventually and maybe change the staging, making it more personal. Either way, his songs are very appreciated but most of the public can’t relate or process most of his songs the first time they hear. Don’t we all have songs we don’t get in the… Read more »

Y’all keep saying “Oh but in 2018 Felix went to Andra Chansen and still placed second in the final” but what are the odds of that happening again? And also, wasn’t 2018 one of the weakest Melfest years ever? And judging by semi final 1 alone, I think it’s safe to say this is going to be a pretty strong year for Melfest, so… I wouldn’t count Felix as a top contender just yet, so far he’s just a big name with an ok song but mediocre performance.

Well, Felix’ song was weak, wasn’t it? His voice was shaky, the lyrics quite bad (I mean, I get the message, but there are better and more subtle ways to sing about it than “forget what your dad says…” ). The staging was good, but it’s far from a winner performance.

Or could she also be getting buzz because her fellow Swedish Idol finalist whom she came runner-up against was on America’s Got Talent last year?

I can see both Mamas and Bengtsson doing well in MF, better than Sandman. It’s more appealing to mainstream audience and more easier. I wouldn’t exclude them winning. I think they even could get more televotes than juryvotes which would be fun for once. I can’t say the same about Sandman.

Jon Ludvik song from MF 2018 is so much better than Mamas song from 2019.

Hopefully they stay top two! It’d be nice to get women from Sweden for a change. It’s been six years!

As the song goes:
“Take a good look at me now, cause I’ll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It’s the chance I’ve gotta take”

Ooo – Thanks for the odds, Padraig. That is quite interesting.
I like Hanna Ferm of course, but when paired up with a songwriting team including Jimmy Jansson and Laurell Barker, and combined with the “golden slot” of performing last in Semi 4, then yes I understand why odds for her have shortened. Still, I find it a bit silly to have any odds before all the songs have been heard – it’s like betting on imagination.

Betting is silly anyway, so it doesn’t really make much difference. It’s never been an indicator of quality, it’s just a way to lose money.

Some people have heard the songs, information gets out. Bookmakers do have a lot of sources. I don’t think there’s as much imagination involved as one might think.

It’ll probably be my favourite Swedish song of the last 5 years if sent as I haven’t cared too much for a couple of their recent hits, but they better serve better staging than what we got on Saturday, because that is not winning stages.

I’d say the bookmakers might have this wrong and have overreacted to Felix not going DTF.
His song is OBVIOUSLY going to appeal to the international juries in the final. So if he gets there (which he should), I think the odds they’re offering on him at the moment are exceptional value.

I’m really excited that there is some momentum for Paul Rey. He is the one I am most excited about this melfest season. He is severely underrated and overshadowed by the returnees. I think he will come with FIRE. And he’s cute!
