Norway’s newly expanded Melodi Grand Prix 2020 brought lots of hype to the country’s Eurovision selection process. And after five weeks of semi-finals, the excitement is about to reach maximum levels with Saturday’s grand final.
MGP 2020 has given us pleasant surprises and a diverse set of genres. But now it’s time to pick your winner!
Melodi Grand Prix 2020: The Finalists
Semi-Final One
Raylee became the first qualifier with the powerful bop, “Wild”. She set the hype train moving and has already amassed over one million Spotify streams.
Sondrey debuted his pre-qualified entry “Take My Time”. The fun pop tune features impressive falsetto notes and a danceable rhythm.
Semi-Final Two
Rein Alexander convinced in semi two. His dramatic Viking-themed dance battle tune “One Last Time” swept away the competition.
Automatic qualifiers Didrik & Emil Solli-Tangen presented their mid-tempo ballad “Out Of Air”. It is one of the bookies’ favourites to win ahead of the grand final, but fans are split.
Semi-Final Three
Kristin Husøy shocked Norway by taking the third semi-final by storm with “Pray for Me”.
Akuvi also revealed “Som du er”. It’s the only Norwegian-language entry to reach the final.
Semi-Final Four
“Over the Sea” by Magnus Bokn was the winner of the fourth semi-final. His cheerful, folk-inspired tune has amassed a lot of support, and even has the sudden key change Eurofans adore.
Ulrikke Brandstorp premiered her power ballad “Attention”, co-penned by 2015 entrant Mørland. The fan support was immediate and strong, and she’s currently first in the betting odds.
Semi-Final Five
North Norway’s fifth semi-final came to a surprising end when Liza Vassilieva took first place with her pro-LGBT bop “I Am Gay”. It should be noted that Liza is not in fact gay.
Tone Damli became the last pre-qualifier to release their entry. “Hurts Sometimes” is a slow pop song that highlights Tone’s fierce vocals.

Yerwot?
I posted a long message and was filtered. In hopes I could just post something short and later edit it with pasting previous content, I tried again. Unfortunately for me, that was filtered too. Not for long, apparently, but as it appeared a few hours later, it just looks like gibberish. I hope moderators would just delete it.

The question around Liza’s song is actually an interesting topic for a debate. To what degree can a performer “falsely” present themselves and keep the integrity of the song? I see a lot of people who are outraged by the fact that Liza sings about being gay despite not actually being one. I totally get where they are coming from, even if I have conflicting feelings about it. On one side, I can defend Liza’s decision to sing about whatever she wants because art isn’t necessarily a documentary or a real testimony. While we always appreciate raw honesty in the… Read more »
woah Raylee got a sudden upswing in the votes :O
Perhaps a sign of what is to come?
Attention or Wild, no other one.
I honestly do not see why people like Attention so much… yeah it’s okay, but definitely not a song I’d listen to again or one that I’d remember after the contest is over. They’re all kinda meh but if I had to pick one then it would be Raylee
Same here. I mean she has amazing vocals and the song itself is beautiful, but that´s it for me… Probably get´s forgotten at Eurovision if she would win MGP
Som Du Er is literally the only one that I’ve listened to all the way through. Others lost my interest pretty quickly, so… Akuvi squad!
Same! Som Du Er is a real bop
I hope they go with something happy and upbeat!
Although ulrikke is seems like the main favorite here, I still think that according to the semifinal results, Norway is going uptempo this year(raylee, rein, magnus, Liza).
I voted for Rein, his song has really grown on me. It is classic Eurovision – ethnic elements, great visuals and a cracking dance beat – I think it will go down really well with the televote. Of course, I expect the jury to be all snobby about it, but I still think it is the best choice for Norway.
None of them will make it into my final top 10 or top 15, so I don’t care. I just say that Raylee shouldn’t win.
Ulrikke has to win. This could be top five in Rotterdam.
Ulrikke or Kristin.
Every single one is AWFUL to be honest. None of them will make the final 100%. The only good song was Lisa Borun ‘Talking about us’ which came second in semi final 1. Norway will not qualify this year. All these songs are cheesy, cringe and outdated. Very amateur.
…what?
Ah yes. Attention, Pray for Me, they don’t exist.
XD let me just enter with those songs and then I will win!
Since first listen Attention has owned my heart, so I’m cheering for you, Ulrikke!! 🙂
Over the sea is orginal. I want that song.
I hope for Raylee, but I’m also OK with Ulrikke. Everything else would be insane. Overall a very weak NF for me.
Ulrikke is overrated, if it will be picked to represent Norway it’ll be a major flop…
I think Norway’s best choice is Attention – but, at the same time, I expect high quality power-ballads to keep pouring into the lineup, so I’m not sure how much it’d stand out! One Last Time is not as good as Attention, but it’s tied for first with me (because I have a minimum quota of leather, fur, chainmail and drums for every Eurovision), and I don’t think anyone else will be sending anything similar! Over The Sea is my next pick …….. because it just makes me happy :'( I expect it would crash in the semis, but I’d… Read more »
I think I better watch my tone, maybe not go too wild or i’ll be out of air. Just a trip over the sea would do it; one last time to Oslo. Pray for me as I take my time. I mean, of course I am gay, but being different hurts sometimes. At the end of the day, I just want more attention.
The challenge: How to fit “Som du er” into all that above. Hmmm.
“They ask me: Who are you? And I respond: Of course I am gay, but being different…”
Hope Ulrikke Brandstorp!
Ulrikke is also my favourite, followed by Akuvi. Magnus and Rein.
Please not Raylee or Liza !
I love both Ulrikke and Rein – although I’m a little concerned that if Rein wins, voters might find it too similar to Higher Ground/Spirit in the Sky. Ulrikke is great, however there seem to be a lot of female solo ballads in the running this year. That being said, it does stand out, and has the potential to do really well. I’d be very happy with either
Yes , a lot of female solo ballads .
Or exactly one out of the 6 known songs so far but let’s let it be
You’re right, it’s too early to tell, but currently Norway, Sweden and Lithuania have female ballads as favorites in terms of being selected, and there will in all likelihood be others. Of course, none of them could be picked and I could end up eating my words
Why is it so often that EVERY song which isn’t uptempo is called a ballad? IMHO, none of the If I Leave, Make Me Human, Bulletproof and Kingdom Come are ballads, if that’s what you’ve been referring to.
I’m no musical expert, so my definition of a ballad is probably way off, but Kingdom Come and Make Me Human definitely seemed like ballads to me, which are the songs I was referring to.
I thought a ballad was a slow, romantic song? Although of course there’s also power ballads, which are at times grouped with normal ballads but which have more of an upbeat tempo?
A ballad is a slow song not necessarily romantic
So make me human and Kingdom come are not slow at all !!!
Make me human is mid-tempo
And Kingdom come leans more uptempo
These don’t even fit your definition
Norway : yes , a ballad is leading odds
Lithuania : make me human , Not a ballad
On fire , not a ballad
Unbreakable , not a ballad
If I leave , maybe called a ballad
Sweden : Hanna ferm , don’t think is a ballad
Kingdom come : uptempo
Bulletproof , mid-tempo
6 ballads in there…….:
Magnus Bokn , Rein Alexander and especially Ulrikke Brandstorp.
Ulrikke or Raylee for different reasons. Objectively speaking, I do believe that Ulrikke’s song is the most sophisticated one. She has killer vocals and I think that she could bring Norway a great result. Then again, Wild has become such a guilty pleasure and we’ll need something in this upbeat tone. Five weeks ago, many people said that there’ll be many songs like this in NFs, but now it’s apparent there is none (unless Sweden or Croatia bring one). So, this might be go-to dance fun song. Plus, Raylee is also great on stage.
I don’t like any of these songs. So no vote from me here…
My favourites are Raylee, Magnus Bokn , Rein Alexander ,Kristin Husøy and Ulrikke Brandstorp.
This is a no-brainer…..there is only 1 song of genuine top 10 quality in MGP this year…….fantastic vocals, meaningful lyrics and a performer with genuine warmth and stage prescence…IT HAS TO BE ULRIKKE!!……. Do the right thing Norway…….PLEASE!!!!
Ulrikke is simmply amazing.
Of course!
Was that sarcastic. Idk if I just read it
No Rein, Liza, Magnus and D&E and I’ll be fine. But tbh not sure Norway is a safe qualifier this year… (could see Sweden, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Belgium, Malta, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Lithuania and Australia qualifying over them + Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Ireland could all surprise
Lol, let them select the song
The song will decide if they are a safe qualifier or not
Raylee for the win! Ulrikke is overrated and boring as hell!
Rooting for Rein Alexander!
I hope Ulrikke wins.
I hope too
Don’t pick the schlager viking
Raylee by far
So many trolls don’t want liza…Homophobes!
The fact that some people don’t like “I Am Gay” doesn’t make them homophobes. They may agree with the song’s message, but at the same time not enjoy the melody, lyrics, stage presentation, vocals, the cheesy vibe… to each his own, you know 🙂
I don’t like the fact that a straight girl is pretending to be gay. I’M queer, I’ve actually had to struggle for it. This girl didn’t but she thinks she still gets to have the “fun” part of being gay. She thinks being lgbt+ is just a giant party when it is so much more than that.
She doesn’t get to call herself gay in a song and not expect any sort of backlash.
1. Over the sea 2. Out of air
Just as long as it’s not liza….
…and Beyonce from Lidl.
Ulrikke. Period.
