After five weeks of semi-finals, tomorrow night Norway will finally select its act for Eurovision 2020. Ten acts will compete in the grand final of Melodi Grand Prix 2020, but who should get the ticket to Rotterdam? The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has listened to the tracks and ranked their favourites. Read on to see what the jury thought!

Antranig

1. Raylee – “Wild”

When we first heard “Wild” in early January, it was obviously the best song of 2020 so far. What’s surprising is that in mid February with all the national finals and internal selections going on, “Wild” is still the best song of 2020 right now. While I suspect it won’t win Eurovision, songwriter Laurell Barker can expect a similar result to “She Got Me”. There is so much quality in Norway that I wouldn’t be disappointed with another outcome but this should be beyond a no-brainer. Raylee is the ultimate performer.

2. Akuvi – “Som du er”
3. Kristin Husøy – “Pray for Me”
4. Tone Damli – “Hurts Sometimes”
5. Rein Alexander – “One Last Time”

Angus

1. Tone Damli – “Hurts Sometimes”

Tone Damli has the full package. Great vocal. Capable emotional delivery. Star quality stagecraft. And in “Hurts Sometimes” she has a song that stands out in the lineup. She doesn’t need pyrotechnics or a melodramatic key change. All she needs is her own talent, novel staging and an appealing midtempo ditty. Bravo!

2. Ulrikke – “Attention”
3. Kristin Husøy – “Pray For Me”
4. Raylee – “Wild”
5. Sondrey – “Take My Time”

Florian

1. Ulrikke – “Attention”

There’s a unique atmosphere that comes with Ulrikke’s track. Unlike any other song in the national selection, Ulrikke brings that magical spark to the stage. Given her emotional performance when she first premiered the track live, “Attention” could very well continue where KEiiNO left off in Tel Aviv.

2. Akuvi – “Som du er”
3. Kristin Husøy – “Pray for Me”
4. Sondrey – “Take My Time”
5. Raylee – “Wild”

Natalie

1. Liza Vassilieva – “I Am Gay”

I know that as a lesbian, I probably have a personal bias for this song. But omg I love it so much. I was really afraid that it was going to be cheesy, overly camp or flamboyant and make me cringe. But it’s not. It’s just joy, it makes me dance, and it’s such a strong message for me. As much as I love the LGBT community, I find it very hard to get into all the glitter and the camp partying. But this is different, it’s so comfy and genuine but still fun to dance to. It really makes me so happy and proud without being embarrassed. This is a very strong selection for Norway, I can’t think of a sub-par song in the final, and there are others which would probably do better at Rotterdam. But this is easily my personal favourite. Thank you, Liza. So much.

2. Raylee – “Wild”
3. Magnus Bokn – “Over the Sea”
4. Ulrikke Brandstorp – “Attention”
5. Tone Damli – “Hurts Sometimes”

Renske

1. Ulrikke Brandstorp – “Attention”

With such a strong line-up, it is really difficult to point out the best song. After watching the show for five weeks, Ulrikke Brandstorp’s performance has impressed me the most. The audio version didn’t do much for me, but the live performance was outstanding and classy — and I have rewatched it many times since. It is just the sort of performance that you long to see on a big stage such as Eurovision.

2. Magnus Bokn – “Over the Sea”
3. Kristin Husøy – “Pray for me”
4. Tone Damli – “Hurts Sometimes”
5. Didrik & Emil – “Out of Air”

Robyn

1. Didrik & Emil – “Out of Air”

Look, I don’t even know what this is doing at the top of my list but I can’t justify putting any other song higher. In theory, it shouldn’t work. “Out of Air” is like a more competently realised take on Joe & Jake’s “You’re Not Alone”. And it’s a more successful take on S!sters (they’re real s!blings). It’s also a bit cheesy but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The magic comes from the Solli-Tangen brothers. The sheer voice of their vocals and their personalities override any of the negative points and turn “Out of Air” into a memorable MPG entry.

2. Sondrey – “Take My Time”
3. Raylee – “Wild”
4. Magnus Bokn – “Over the Sea”
5. Ulrikke Brandstorp – “Attention”

Luis

1. Raylee – “Wild”

“Wild” is such a tune. The verses drag you in, the pre-chorus surprises you and then — bang! — horns and a super infectious hook. It may be formulaic, but mastering the basics of a genre is often a way to succeed at Eurovision. Raylee is such an appealing performer and she’s proven she can dance and kill it on stage. This is a clear choice, Norway.

2. Ulrikke Brandstorp – “Attention”
3. Kristin Husøy – “Pray For Me”
4. Akuvi – “Som du er”
5. Rein Alexander – “One Last Time”

Almost couldn’t agree more. Those four girls are kinda at the same level for me. Would be so happy if either of them won. Though, I would prefer Attention over Wild, I think.
The last place I also agree 100% on. Would be so embarrassed if we end up sending One last time to Rotterdam. It’s just a cringe-fest all the way through.

Ulrikke is the best here. Raylee’s song is cheap and a fanwank. Liza is a joke. No one else offers anything unique enough to comment on.

Rooting with all my heart for “Attention”, but I also like “Pray For Me” and “Som du er”.

I guess it’s between Ulrikke, Rein and Raylee and if I had to pick between these other 2 I would prefer “One Last Time”, for a simple reason: we’ll most probably have in the lineup something better in the same lane as “Wild” (also, if the intention is to send a bop, why not Akuvi’s one, in Norwegian?), while “viking schlager” certainly isn’t in anybody elses’s plans around Europe!

Any of the Danish songs would look weird as hell with viking schlager staging. But… well, “One Last Time” is weird too. In an enjoyable way, but weird.

This is a NF I have been following quite closely. I am going to focus on my favorites: 1. Rein – I am a sucker for an “event” song and this is one for me. The drama, the visuals, the beat, it all lends itself to an intoxicating 3 minutes – exactly what ESC is made for. I won’t pretend it’s the most sophisticated, original song ever, but it’s won me over 2. Ulrikke – I wanted to hate this as I normally don’t like over-hyped entries, but I must admit this is impressive. Definitely Lucie Jones vibes going on,… Read more »

Wow. A few points: 1. Interesting how none of the jury chose “Over the sea” or “One last time”; I have been hearing good things from fans of those songs. 2. It is nice to read a positive opinion of Liza’s song for a change – thanks Natalie for that. (I know I risk downvotes for making this point, but it is my opinion nevertheless.) 3. Referring to Robyn’s opinion, I do understand the potential “magic” of the brothers. I think the reason I wasn’t feeling it in the semi was because of that awful “kids in the choreography” choice,… Read more »

I think the Solli-Tangen brothers are great, but why do we need them both? It’s weird. Are they singing to each other? Are they singing to the same person?

The way it was choreographed, they were both singing about younger versions of themselves and their brotherly love for each other. (But the actual song might be different.)

My top 4:
1. Raylee – Wild

I personally hate Ulrikke’s song, and I think it is just a boring ballad, which is not what Norway is known for.

The Norwegian final is really good this year. Eventhough there is only one clear winner and a sure fire qualifier (Attention) there are many other great songs as well (hurts sometimes, som du er, pray for me, wild) and the rest are great fillers and make up a great show overall. No overall bad songs… Even the 2 sure non qualifiers aren’t that bad (out of air, over the sea).

Saturday is going to be fun to experience live ?

God please, if Raylee were to win, can we make sure it doesn’t turn out to be another Fuego 3.0 or She Got Me 2.0? It’s between Raylee and Ulrikke for me. “Wild” is pretty catchy, but if we were to send it, I hope we can do something about it so it differs from the performances I’ve mentioned…

Is still think Rein Alexander is the only worthy successor to Keiino. Ofc this year’s nmgp is not as strong as last year but still I think he is the only one that stands out. And I have to agree with some of the other comments that Wild sounds more like fuego than she got me did

Nicola

My faves include ‘Attention’ and ‘I am Gay’, as they are the 2 Mgp songs that I listen to that are actually in the final. My no.1 song out of the 25, ‘Talking about us’ didn’t even make the final (and I am probably in the minority, but I preferred this to ‘Wild. Although I do still like ‘Wild’, and the song is growing on me).
In the end tho, Norway should ultimately pick ‘Attention’ as the song that should represent them in Rotterdam.
Also love the variety of favourites in the Wiwi Jury!

‘When we first heard “Wild” in early January, it was obviously the best song of 2020 so far’. Well… just no. ‘Wild’ sounds more like a tasteless Cher Llyod’s song than ‘She Got Me’. How can we compare both of those songs ?!

This final I feel doesn’t really have any standout act.
There are songs which can have great televote appeal and not so for the juries (rein, raylee) and some with great jury appeal and less for televotes(attention), so I think it can go anywhere during the night.

Interesting to see how Som du er finished so highly for the bloggers.

1. Som du er

it is an issue, guitar heart. Imagine a white person singing “I am black”, or a rich person singing about how poor and penniless they are. It’s the same thing to a straight person singing about being gay. She is taking away the rights that many gay people have suffered through and making fun of them by saying “I am gay”, while many people who are actually gay can never say that for fear of being attacked or ridiculed or ostracised. Check yourself. And what gays have been singing about girls? I’d love some actual song names.
