Hej Malmö!

On Saturday night Melodifestivalen 2020 Semi-Final 4 will take place at the Malmö Arena.

A final set of seven acts will share the stage. All of them have their eyes on the final at Friends Arena.

But only two can advance direct from the final and two indirectly via the duels of Andra Chansen. The other three will be out in the cold at the close of the show.

Song Snippets

Click on each act to hear their snippet:

1. Frida Öhrn – “We Are One”
2. William Stridh – “Molnljus”
3. Nanne Grönvall – “Carpool Karaoke”
4. Victor Crone – “Troubled Waters”
5. Ellen Benediktson & Simon Peyron – “Surface”
6. Jakob Karlberg – “Om du tror att jag saknar dig”
7. Hanna Ferm – “Brave”

Clips from each act’s stage rehearsals follow tonight at 21:00CET. These give our first impression of how the acts will look on Saturday night. We’ll only see the full performance and hear the full songs during the live show.

Melodifestivalen 2020 Semi Final 4 Running Order

Frida Öhrn kicks things off with an “arena country” entry. “We Are One” has drawn direct comparisons to pre-qualified finalist Anna Bergendahl’s 2019 entry “Ashes To Ashes”.

She’s followed by William Stridh. He rose to fame on Idol, but “Molnljus” has drawn a lukewarm response from critics.

Melfest icon Nanne Grönvall follows with her tribute to James Corden, “Carpool Karaoke”. She’s the only act this week using backing dancers, so can be relied on to bring us a real show.

Eurovision veteran Victor Crone sings in fourth. “Troubled Waters” has been tipped as a song to watch in the final.

Dynamic duo Ellen Bendiktson & Simon Peyron are on fifth. Their song “Surface” has drawn comparisons to A Star Is Born megahit “Shallow”. Camera angles will be key here.

Sixth sees a change in pace for Jakob Karlberg and “Om du tror att jag saknar dig”.

This week’s closer and the final entry in the competition comes from Hanna Ferm. She’ll sing “Brave”.

@schlagerprofilerna is in love! It loves @hannaferms’ voice, her artistry and “this kind of simple, quirky, pop song”. It draws comparisons to Marina & The Diamonds, Ava Max and Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts. However, it’s by no means a guaranteed winner. It doesn’t have the “in-your-face-schlager” of Anna Bergendahl’s “Kingdom Come” or the “I-recognise-this-from-the-radio vibe” of Dotter’s “Bulletproof”. And what about @victorcrone? Aftonbladet says his song starts quieter than Frida’s show opener but picks up nicely during the chorus. Schlager Profilerna boldly declares that the track is “much better” than “Storm”. Victor is said to be the male act to watch in this semi, and possibly in the final too alongside Robin Bengtsson. #melfest #melodifestivalen #esc2020 #eurovision #melfest2020

I liked William’s song the most from these snippets, the rest were okayish. Still prefer Anna’s, Dotter’s, Mariette’s, and(I forgot about them but only cause I haven’t really been to intrigued to really listen to any of the Melodifestivalen songs this year) The Mama’s songs are my favorite. But anyways good luck to all participants nonetheless.

By that rule The Mamas or a male act would win.

My favorite track from melodifestivalen is actually crying rivers by faith! How did it got eliminated? Don’t get it.
From this semi maybe the full version of brave will be better(together with the live performance), but I just don’t like the chorus..its quite generic and repetitive(and the lyrics medicore also.)
The rest in this semi are nothing special for me.
And honestly, probably dotter will win, but I’m not sure she can win in Rotterdam..

Massively underwhelmed by 95% of melfest this year. None of these songs jump out to me at all. Anna and Dotter are the front runners for me

I for one like Brave. I don’t think it will win because it’s not that type of song but its likely to do well and be a summer hit. It has a nice vibe although not sure if that is “quirky pop”
That said I do think 2020 MF is the strongest in years. Most of the songs should do really well in Rotterdam, which is more than I would say in 2018 and 2019. I even think they might get televote support. And yes, a woman will win..

I like Victors song, its really pleasant. I think he will get app votes from me. I can see this semi go either way, as I dont really dislike any of the songs except Nanne. Surface could be elevated with a good staging and Hanna Ferm will most likely have an amazing staging as well

MGP >>>>>>>>> Mellfest! San Remo >>>>>>>>> Mellfest. This is becoming a Pop contest for Sweden, the same pattern of songs year by year, we know it, you know it… The televoters in Eurovision know it and soon the juries will be fed up and bring Sweden down. It’s time for them to stay out of the final at least one year, and maybe they’ll reinvent themselves, like it happened in 2010 with Granny-voice (Anna) not qualifying, and then in 2011 and 2012 Sweden came back stronger and stronger (especially in 2012, Euphoria was epic!)

I can’t decide who to vote for in the final, Dotter or The Mamas. I love both!! Dotter is so good and The Mamas makes me smile and want to dance! It is going to be exciting to see the last semi live in Malmö but I doubt it will change my mind. Hannah is said to have a music video stage show and I’m fed up with those.

I’ve heard William’s snippet again and it is very good and pleasant.
Sad this kind of songs never do well at Melodifestivalen but then you see Darin’s last song doing very well right now in Sweden. Or Victor Leskell, Molly Sanden, etc.
It’s like there are 2 different Swedens xd

Dotter or Anna for the win in March! These songs are not bad, but those two are the ones which stand out in Mello 2020 and those which will have stronger options to score another top-5 for Sweden.
Should it be Dotterdam or Anna’s revenge after a decade? Swedes, you choose.

Yes. Let’s stop sending songs, backing vocalists, producers etc. to the other countries and start to step up in melodifestivalen. But I saw this coming already when they presented the acts on the press conference. The show used to be the best window to promote a new song and to get familiar with the Swedish audience. Today people just release singles when they like. Major Swedish acts has no interest in the competition. Molly Sandén, Darin, Danny Saucedo etc. won’t return because people already listen to their new releases. Same for acts that see themselves too unique for the contest:… Read more »

…But really, the largest acts go to tv4 instead. Same with show hosts. And with spotify you can go from unknown to a debut single without a competition like this. To go back to success the competition needs to reinvent Swedish music. Not be a weak copy of it. What about reintroducing live music? Getting a major rock band to compete. Getting another likeable dansband. A major R&B musician like Oskar Linnros or Seynabo Sey. What about Timbuktu, Petter or similar hiphop acts with a long carrier. Maybe Doktor Alban or Dogge Doggelito could succeed with a well produced song… Read more »

Yes, we’ve won 6 times, but I want them to constantly bring quality. Of course I watch the show no matter. Maybe you do too. What do you suggest? That I just support them no matter the quality? Also, I made an analysis of the shows position in Sweden. Before it was really THE way to get plays on radio and sell records. Today it’s still watched, but they don’t succeed in getting major acts to the show. For example Salem al Fakir, Darin and Agnes has participated when they were really popular names. Artists with similar popularity today only… Read more »

I’m pleasantly surprised by SF4.

My top from those snippets:
1. Victor Crone — he should be able to sing this effectively on stage and the song sounds good. I like that it seems like the second part in a story of songs, from Storm to Troubled Waters.
2. William Stridh — his voice sounds really nice and it would be refreshing to have Sweden send something in Swedish.

As it stands though, from what I’ve seen, I want Sweden to send The Mamas to Rotterdam.

Well, I like Hanna’s song but we’ ll have to wait until Saturday to see if she is a contender. I mean for many, Anna and (mostly) Dotter were AC or not even top 4 when their snippets came out and now we all talk about them. For good or bad this a contest and the staging can really elevate a song so we shouldn’t judge Hanna from a one minute snippet. P.S I really like this year’s hosts but i don’t live in Sweden now so i don’t know what people think about them. I would appreciate it if… Read more »

If Sweden wants to send a song that will be different than any of the others at Rotterdam than it needs to send the Mamas. It’s not necessarily the best song in the selection but it is the most unique.

I enjoy Hanna’s song but I’m not sure if it’s distinctive enough to be the best choice for esc. (without seeing the staging ofc) Definitely sounds like an Ava Max song which is completely fine with me. Victor has a song that must be heard fully to appreciate it, but as for now I’m a bit disappointed. For Eurovision I would choose either Dotter, Anna or Hanna for a solid top 5/top 10 finish or Felix Sandman as more of a wild card.

Briekimchi

In my opinion, Hanna probably has the strongest female entry so far. I expect it to go DTF.
Victor Crone’s got a slightly weaker version of Storm. Seems to be more in his vocal range so overall, it might work out better for him.

Frida and Ellen/Simon AC.

At this point, I think a very non-Wiwiblogg commenter friendly song is probably going to win.

Going off of the snippets, I think this is actually quite a tough semi final to call, results wise. I am a bit let down with Hanna, she sounds great and the song sounds good, but I was expecting more, given how much she was being hyped up to win the whole thing. Surface was the real surprise to me, I had no idea what to expect with Ellen & Simon, and I think it might be my favourite of these 7. Anna Bergendahl is still my favourite of the lot though, looking forward to seeing the performance clips later!

Yep, now i’m sure SF2 is the strongest this season. In my opinion, after SF3 & SF4 came out, there’s nothing as standout as Anna & Dotter (Kingdom Come is my personal winner, it’s full package)

DTF: Victor & Hanna
AC: Frida/Ellen&Simon/Nanne

Yeah so Hanna Ferm’s song doesn’t scream ‘winner’ of MF or Eurovision to me. If I had to pick a top two it would be the Mamas and Dotter. And out of the two, the Mamas edge it for me. It’s just more fun and can get you dancing plus it makes more sense lyrically (I can’t understand the “The choir sings forever rest in peace” lyric in the Bulletproof chorus – can someone explain that to me?) Either way I don’t think Sweden is going to win Eurovision this year

Because its about her celeberty status. It’s not the song. She would probably go to the final no matter the song. She already was the runner up in Swedish Idol together with placing well last year. The odds are based on her likeableness

As expected, Victor and Hanna have the songs which sound best at first. As a fan of Storm, of course that I instantly like Troubled Waters, but I wish if he had moved away from the same style and lyrics just a bit. It literally is Storm 2.0, but I guess I’m okay with that. Hanna’s song isn’t re-inventing the wheel either, but it’s catchy and could make an energetic performance. I guess the only other real threat to be DTF is Nanne, because this is funny and with the right presentation, it could be the Road Trip or Rolandz… Read more »
