Roxen Romania Eurovision 2020

After losing its 100% qualification record in 2018 and missing out again in 2019, Romania is shaking things up with Selectia Naționala 2020. Unlike previous editions, the 1 March final will only feature one artist — Roxen. And over the course of the evening she’ll perform five songs, one of which she’ll take to Eurovision 2020. And while local fans can catch the Eurovision selection by switching their televisions to TVR 1, international viewers will need to try alternative means.

Here’s when and how you can watch the grand final of Selectia Naționala 2020 with Roxen.

Watch Selectia Naționala 2020 online

Grand final — 1 March 2020

Time: 20:00 CET to 22:40 CET

The grand final of Selectia Naționala will be streamed live on the TVR website.

Watch Selectia Naționala 2020 online.

The selection will see Roxen perform five songs. The results will be determined by a 50/50 jury and public split.

The competing songs are:

  1. “Beautiful Disasters”
  2. “Cherry Red”
  3. “Colors”
  4. “Alcohol You”
  5. “Storm”

The show will be hosted by Eurovision veterans Elena Gheorghe and Connect-R. The former sang for Romania in 2009 while the latter was part of Moldova’s 2006 act. Both hosts are expected will sing too. Elena will reprise “Balkan Girls” with a new twist.  Meanwhile, Connect-R will treat fans to one of his big hits — “Eu vara nu dorm”.

There will also be guest performances from Norway’s Ulrikke, Cyprus’ Sandro and Eurovision 2012 winner Loreen. Dora Gaitanovici, who placed sixth in the 2018 national final, will perform a medley of some of Romania’s best-loved song contest entries.

Sabotage is a strong word when you don’t have proof.

In my opinion, it was the best performance tonight. If they intended to be better than the others, I can’t say.

Totally disagree about the comparison with Italy. But yeah, there’s some work to do. I felt she got more comfortable during the show, but tonight she’s competing just against herself. She’ll need much more control when paired with a bunch of other singers, some of them very skilled vocalists.

Is Elena singing in Makedonian or Aromanian? Sorry I don’t know how to call it. “Aromana”. She said she’s half Makedonian and half from Transylvania (Ardeal).

Una

That’s a dialect of the Romanian language.

Una

She said it. Yes it was Aromanian. A dialect spoken in the south of Romania. Very specific ethnic identity. Simona Halep (tennis) and Gheorghe Hago (football) are Makedons too.

The dancers were fabulous!

Alchohol You was the best so far IMO as per stage performance. The visuals were mindblowing. I was expecting the piano but what to do. Better delivery in body performance and vocally too. It looked like everyone liked it.

I agree, it was the best performance so far. And since “Storm” would be my last choice, I’ll settle down with this one. Can’t understand Romanian, but I believe the jury was more excited about it than about the previous songs.

Roxen very clearly and blatantly had a personal favorite song she wanted to send which is why she intentionally made this one have the nicest performance.

Elena’s second song – ECHO. It’s so good! I recommend you see it. Even without knowing Romanian it’s still good. The video tells a nice story. And it’s *very well done*!

Conchita was well received. RISE LIKE A PHOENIX! I haven’t heard the song in a while. I liked it!

Nevermind Ulrikke’s performance which was very good. But both Ulrikke and Conchita had similar wedding style dresses. Vocals were good and the songs too.

It is. No time for rehearsal thus the long shots. Even though there was a moment in Beautiful Disaster when the cameraperson did a few rounds around Roxen. That was my first fave moment of the evening.

Natalia Gordienco (or Gordienko? I have seen it written both ways) performed in the Romanian national final, this time without live backing vocals. Let’s say she has a lot of work to do from now to May.

On the other hand, Ulrikke (she’s also there) nailed it, as usual.

After three songs and considering the stage performance (voice and delivery can improve until Rotterdam) my top is:
1. Beautiful Disaster
2. Cherry Red
3. Colours
PS. It looks like there is a certain preference for song number 3 – not mine, but some opinions expressed after by other people.

I love “Beautiful Disaster” (love the totally non-romantic using of lyrics about love) but her vocals weren’t good on this one. I have a feeling “Alcohol For You” will win,

Awww. I want either Alcohol You or Beautiful Disaster to win. I personally don’t mind the vocals tonight even though I was a bit disappointed. There is time to improve until May. First big performances for Roxen so I am hopeful. Can’t wait for Alcohol You.

Re: comments on Roxen’s delivery of Cherry Red: 1. Male juror suggests that she smiles – friendly piece of advice for future performances. Considering that song is a BOP! 2. Female juror (Crina, not Luminita) – says that Roxen is a sort of artistic construct, hence the lack of smile. My question as a fan and viewer: how come not to smile when you sing a BOP? I mean, how can you expect people to *like* you when you don’t engage with the public with a *smile*? I was looking at her to see a hint of happiness or enjoyment… Read more »

Weird choice to have Roxen just standing there shaking her shoulders while glittered shirtless men dance capoeira around her during “Cherry Red”. The only time she interacted with them, they just (gently) pushed her to the back of the stage.

this is when one singer has to prepare multiple performances. In my opinion half way down compared with profesional videos. sound was not good. or she just chose one song already and prepared really good performance for it

Let’s see how the remaining 2 songs will be performed, but you have a point. I remember that Finland had put much more effort on the entries that ended up winning (and that were also the frontrunners) for Saara Alto and Darude.

They were trying something fancy there, but I don’t think it works. Though capoeira looks great on TV, I wish we could see more of her during the performance. By the way, Roxen looks gorgeous and her costumes are great so far.

She does look gorgeous indeed. Her styling is one of my highlights of the evening.
I loved the capoeira but the camera shots were strange. Yes, we could not see much of her. Mu guess is that what matters most right now is the song. The performance of the winning song will certainly be finetuned for Rotterdam.

She’s performed already Beautiful Disaster and Cherry Red (before 20:45 CET). The jurors give their opinions after each song. It looks like there is someone that sings after each song. First it was Dora, a former Eurovision contestant in selectia nationala – she’s from Buzau, the place where the show is held tonight. And now it’s one of the co-hosts that sings.

That running order makes no sense. They should start with a banger that isn’t the favourite Storm, go slower with Colors, then the awkward middle child Beautiful Disaster, pick up the pace with Cherry Red and then end with fan favourite highlight Alcohol You.
