Stockpile some water and take shelter: Serbia are sending Hurricane to Eurovision 2020. The sassy three-piece topped both the professional jury and the public vote at Beovizija, Serbia’s national selection. The trio will perform the upbeat banger “Hasta la vista” in Rotterdam this May.

Beovizija returned for its third edition since being reintroduced as Serbia’s selection method back in 2018. Over the past few years, it’s helped bring the Balkan nation back to the Eurovision grand final but has not yet reached the success that it boasted in the 00s. Whether or not Hurricane will be able to break that spell is yet to be seen. But the temperature is definitely rising, which makes us want to delve deep into the lyrics and message of their toe-tapping number.

Serbia in Eurovision 2020: Hurricane “Hasta la vista”

Aside from Eurovision 2016 alum, Sanja Vučić, Hurricane includes Ksenija Knežević and Ivana Nikolić. If Ksenija’s name looks familiar — there’s a reason. She’s the daughter of another Eurovision alumni, Montenegro’s 2015 singer Knez.

The story of the group’s formation is explained by their founder, Zoran Milinković. After Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the Caribbean in 2017, Milinković participated in the cleanup efforts on the island of Saint Martin. After returning to Serbia, he then formed the group to send a message of support. Hurricane’s first single, fittingly, was named “Irma, Maria”. The music video showed cleanup efforts, whilst the song preached about the strength and will to rebuild after tragedy.

What do the “Hasta la vista” lyrics mean?”

The song doesn’t just bring life to the party: It comes with a message of empowerment. Hurricane’s “Hasta la vista” tells the tale of a troublesome man who thinks he is too good for the singers. But individually they remember to stay confident and true to themselves in the face of this man’s indifference.

The verses start with the girls venting feelings of restlessness and sleeplessness over a lover they’re currently obsessed with – despite the fact that he is not reciprocating the sentiments. He looks at them with an empty face and a cold heart. But with attitude as fierce as their group name suggests, the girls of Hurricane refuse to give up on themselves.

Going into the pre-chorus, their confidence builds as they begin to realise that they don’t need to prove themselves to anyone. They know their worth and they are enough. They tell this guy that dating them is never boring, yet he always finds himself with the wrong woman. They ultimately deliver an ultimatum: it is me or nothing.

In the chorus, our trio is in full swing, leaving this man behind in their dust.  They are unapologetic for who they are and say they’re ready to tell anyone who rejects them the same thing: it’s your loss, honey.

“Hasta la vista” lyrics — Hurricane (Serbia ESC 2020)

Written by Sanja Vučić and Kosana Stojić
Composed by Nemanja Antonić

Original lyrics

Jedan, dva, tri i kraj – odbrojano je znaj
Ruke uvis na moj znak, opet si sa njom, opet-opet si sa njom
Zbog tebe nemam sna.
Tišina ubija
Ostaćemo ti i ja, praznih pogleda.
Ti bez srca ja bez sna

Mada ponekad sam malo crazy
Al‘ sa mnom nikad nije dosadno u vezi
A ti uvek biraš pogrešnu sebi

Zbog tebe nemam sna
Tišina ubija
Nije ovo sujeta.
U ljubavi to je cute but psycho

Mada ponekad sam malo crazy
Al‘ sa mnom nikad nije dosadno u vezi
A ti uvek biraš pogrešnu sebi

Imam novi plan, imam imam novi plan
Hasta la vista, baby
Hasta la vista, baby oohh
Hasta la, Hasta la vista, baby
Hasta la vista, baby
Hasta la vista, baby

English translation

One, two, three: it’s the end – your time’s up
Hands up on my sign, you’re with her again, again, you’re with her
I’m sleepless because of you.
The silence is killing me
You and I will be left with empty looks
You with no heart, I with no sleep

Though I might be a bit crazy sometimes
But dating me is never boring
But you always pick the wrong girl for yourself
Now, my dear, take it or leave it

Hasta la vista, baby, I have a new plan, I have, I have a new plan
Hasta la vista, baby, It’s clear as day, clear as, clear as day.
Say “thank you” to me for loving you, for falling for a guy like you
Oh, well, sorry you didn’t end up liking me
Hasta la vista, baby

One, two, three: it’s the end – your time’s up
Hands up on my sign, you’re with her again, again, you’re with her
I’m sleepless because of you
The silence is killing me
This is not vanity
When it comes to love, it’s cute but psycho

Though I might be a bit crazy sometimes
but dating me is never boring
But you always pick the wrong girl for yourself
Now, my dear, take it or leave it

Hasta la vista, baby, I have a new plan, I have, I have a new plan
Hasta la vista, baby, It’s clear as day, clear as, clear as day.
Say “thank you” to me for loving you, for falling for a guy like you
Oh, well, sorry you didn’t end up liking me
Hasta la vista, baby

Oh yes, like it or not
I want to give myself to you
And may the world turn around
You and me on the edge of insanity
When I say it’s the end
When I say it’s the end

Hasta la vista, baby, I have a new plan, I have, I have a new plan
Hasta la vista, baby, It’s clear as day, clear as, clear as day.
Say “thank you” to me for loving you, for falling for a guy like you
Oh, well, sorry you didn’t end up liking me

Hasta la vista, baby
I have a new plan, I have a new plan
Hasta la vista, baby
Hasta la vista, baby oohh
Hasta la, Hasta la vista, baby
Hasta la vista, baby
Hasta la vista, baby

Hello Everyone. it is strange that no one sees that the lyrics of this song as well as the change of performance of Sanja Vucic have a symbolic meaning. In superficial terms, this is a love affair, and in fact it is a reckoning with the false morals and musical taste of the Eurovision audience.

Sanja Vucic is trying so hard to act like Nicole Scherzinger, lmao. Can’t believe she is the same artist who sang Shelter.

Shelter is song written completely by another artist (Ivana Peters), not Sanja. ”Hasta la vista” is co-written by Sanja, so I guess this is more her song and she’s not trying so hard. But who is real Sanja, we don’t know lol

You can’t expect Hasta La Vista and Shelter’s songwriter to be the same person by miles, lol. She poses entirely two different characteristics, though.

So.. not giving up on the junk/trash concept, “we’ll be arrogant bitches and we’ll do what we want”.. YOLO everybody.. ahmm.. nope.. it is tasteless and it is moving towards repugnant as times passes.. Like”I don’t care if you like me or not cuz I am the best”.. what exactly are you best at? 2 of the 3 can hardly sing.. and I don’t even care for you, just walking down the street minding my business and there you are in my face saying well HASTA LA VISTA TO YOU.. well fine.. whatever.. i never even planned something with you..… Read more »

Lmao chill, what is the story in your head based on song hahaha, Hasta la vista she say to toxic relationship. And calling someone arrogant bitch based on song is more immature. If you see their interviews they are actually very sweet and down- to-earth girls.

I find it funny how people press minuses but they do not support that minus with a stance.. I do not call her anything, it’s the image they are portraying that says that. There is no toxic relationship mentioning, the only toxic is judging by the lyrics the girl, she gives him a choice but when he chooses somebody else she goes nuts, she can’t sleep she hates him but she craves for him.. I mean.. weird.. no wonder he left you…

Damn not that I will analyse now Hasta la vista like it’s Shakespeare, but I didn’t see that, it’s more like on-off relationship which could be often toxic for both sides and she decides to end it finally. I will just relax and dance instead, don’t know who gives you minuses, but you should not pay attention to minuses : )

The song is about a man who is repeatedly caught cheating, so she decides to say goodbye. It was written from her imagination as Sanja has had the same boyfriend for a few years. And it is mainly a song that people can use and interpret as they wish: they could use it as a good workout or dance song as it is very energetic.

I sometimes wonder what the point of a lyrics article is for a song like this. I think everyone knows what it’s about from the title, and I don’t think the purpose of the song is to contemplate the intricacies and emotional depth of the words? I suppose it is helpful to confirm what I thought the song was about as my knowledge of Serbian is zero.

I agree, regardless of the minuses we will both receive 😉 Just because many people didn’t like your comment doesn’t mean it is incorrect..

I’ll leave it. I actually find it very boring, musically and lyrically. Israel is good in the up-tempo department. I suppose it’s a good product for the target audience? I honestly can’t tell with this genre.

Hurricane wanted SJB and were ready to pay for everything but unfortunately RTS is stuck in the 90s so they refused and now some people that are also stuck in the 90s are going to their staging. They deserve so much better, RTS is sabotaging their own country

It is better they keep their outfits they had at the national final because I fear they could do so much worse – just look at what they did in 2013 with Moje 3.
