San Marino has staged another Eurovision comeback, and this time the microstate is counting on Italian-Eritrean singer Senhit to get it back to the grand final for the second year in a row. She let the fandom choose her entry from two shortlisted song and the fans ultimately voted for “Freaky!” — a disco-infused number that builds on last year’s disco-era number from Serhat. The track was written by an Italian-Swedish team consisting of Gianluigi Fazio, Henrik Steen Hansen and Nanna Bottos Olsen. Eurovision fans who know Senhit only from her Eurovision 2011 ballad “Stand By” will see a woman reborn.

San Marino in Eurovision 2020: Senhit “Freaky!”

Forty-year-old Senhit Zadik Zadik participated at Eurovision 2011 with the smooth ballad “Stand By”. Then spelling her name Senit, she failed to make it to the final. Nine years after that experience, she returns to the song contest with a renewed image and style, ready to offer an explosive performance and to help San Marino reach a third grand final after Valentina Monetta in 2014 and Serhat in 2019. Senhit won’t be alone in this adventure. Behind her is Luca Tommassini — for years one of the leading names in Italian showbusiness — who she’s chosen as creative director for this year’s Sammarinese participation.

Born and raised in Bologna to Eritrean parents, she brings an international outlook and a wide range of musical influences. She began her career at the age of 20, in the world of musicals, performing in German-speaking countries in shows such as “Fame” and “The Lion King”. Live audiences do not intimidate this tigress.

The singer has released several albums and an EP, and has a long list of singles, both in Italian and English. Among the most recent ones are “Something on Your Mind“, “Un bel niente” and “Heart Ache“. Senhit is a multi-faceted talent. Her oeuvre spans Italian pop to ballads, rock, country, electropop, house, dance and soul.

What do the “Freaky!” lyrics mean?

At its core “Freaky!” is a call for all of us to celebrate life and the things that matter most: friendship, love and relationships.

The verses describe a relationship at its peak, when emotions and feelings are flowing on full throttle. When Senhit’s beloved touches her, she can “feel your love all over my body”. This includes her beating heart and, given the sensual video, perhaps some other areas too. Senhit showcases a playful relationship where the pair really live their best life — day, night and every hour in between.

“Drinks on rooftops, kiss in the dark, dance around late in the park,” she sings. When others “say we cray” and that she “must be faking” her feelings, Senhit just turns the dial up a few more notches: “But you and I we like it freaky, freaky, freaky!”

The chorus sums up her message: that we should all seize the day, break the existing rules and lay down our own. “Life goes by too quickly now not to be freaking it up!” Inspirational words for troubled times.

Senhit – “Freaky” Lyrics

So, when you touch me, I feel your love all over my body
(Body, body, body, body)
You make me feel like I’m spinning from the way that you want me
(Want me, want me, want me, want me, want me, want)

Put on a show,
c-c-completely
Some people think our love is freaky, freaky, freaky
They say we cray, I must be faking
But you and I, we like it freaky, freaky, freaky

Drinks on rooftops and kiss in the dark
Dance around late at night in the park
Sparkle it up, dressing in colours
‘Cause life is good when we’re freaky, freaky, freaky

So, when you touch me, I feel your love all over my body
(Body, body, body, body)
You make me feel like I’m spinning from the way that you want me
(Want me, want me, want me)

Yeah, we wanna break all the rules
And make up some new
Then we’ll destroy all of them too
‘Cause that’s what we do, oh yeah
And life goes by too quickly now not to be freaking it up
Freaking it up
Freaky, freaky, freaky

Drinks on rooftops and kiss in the dark
Dance around late at night in the park
Sparkle it up, dressing in colours
‘Cause life is good when we’re freaky, freaky, freaky

Freaky, freaky, freaky
Freaky, freaky, freaky

They say we cray, I must be faking
But you and I, we like it freaky, freaky, freaky
Sparkle it up, dressing in colours
‘Cause life is good when we’re freaky, freaky, freaky

Yeah, we wanna break all the rules
And make up some new
Then we’ll destroy all of them too
‘Cause that’s what we do, oh yeah
And life goes by too quickly now not to be freaking it up
Freaking it up (Freaky, freaky, freaky)
Break all the rules
And make up some new
Then we’ll destroy all of them too
‘Cause that’s what we do, oh yeah
And life goes by too quickly now not to be freaking it up
Freaking it up (Freaky, freaky, freaky)
They say we cray, I must be faking
But you and I, we like it freaky, freaky, freaky
Sparkle it up, dressing in colours
‘Cause life is good when we’re freaky, freaky, freaky

I like and admire Senhit, which is why it is so difficult to admit I am not into this song at all.
It is just hard for me not to hear the words “freaky” and “cray” without negative connotations – I was bullied with those words for many years. It’s a sad reminder of a time of my life I would like to forget, which also happened to involve disco music. I know, I’m getting old. I see the fun for others though, and Eurovision needs some disco every year.

Sending a hug to you, Purple. I get what you mean, though I think this song does a much much better job of celebrating difference then the very abysmal attempt made by last year’s UK NF song ‘Freaks’. (As we discussed last year! Man, I really hated that song). I think the tone is different here. I think San Marino are using ‘freaky’ here to mean something more like ‘quirky’/cool and maybe also ‘jiggy’. If being freaky means to be something odd and eccentric, is the non-freaky something common and ordinary, dull even? The small-minded might bully those they don’t… Read more »

Entries like Freaky further my point that this year has a lot of cool mom/dad/aunt/etc energy. Hope she can pull it off on stage.

You wanna know why I love San Marino so much and root for them every year? 2018 was the first time I actively followed Eurovision from start to finish. Right around that time, I was going through a particularly rough patch in my life. I was very depressed and it felt like everything was falling apart. I wasn’t achieving any of the things I wanted. It all felt so hopeless. But I couldn’t help but look at San Marino, this tiny little country, who go out there every year on that big stage and make an effort. Would Eurovision be… Read more »

Joe, that is an inspiring story. I just wanted you to know that my comments below are nothing to do with San Marino at all, it’s just I don’t like the song. I’ll explain why if we get to the Wiwi jury stage this year. Your post was a useful reminder for me to not be too harsh on certain entries as like myself, there can be some entries which have a deep personal connection and even if I don’t feel that myself, others might.
Best of wishes mate.

Oh Joe, that’s a wonderful story 🙂
It made me feel happier just reading that. I’m really glad the plucky spirit of San Marino helped you.

Reminds me of something I read recently:
“We make things and seed them into the world, never fully knowing — perhaps never knowing at all — whom they will reach and how they will blossom in other hearts, how their meaning will unfold in contexts we never imagined.”
