She would have brought passion and fierceness to Eurovision with “Empires” — her dramatic ballad about how mankind can build up the world and then tear it apart. But the cancellation of Eurovision 2020 ultimately brought an end to Alicja Szemplińska‘s journey to Rotterdam. Thankfully for the Polish star — and most of the other confirmed 2020 participants — the dream is not over yet.
The Eurovision bubble is still recovering from the loss of Eurovision 2020. And so are the artists. In recent days we’ve collected the 2020 artists’ responses to the cancellation announcement, and Alicja’s voice was prominent among them.
“My dears! The worst-case scenario just came true and this year’s Eurovision in Rotterdam has been cancelled. We all know the reason. Health is the most important, so let’s take care of it as well as we can! Right now I’m returning to the studio to record new songs and I will keep you posted. Kind regards and I just want to hug you all in these difficult times! Stay tuned!”
Poland: Alicja Szemplińska for Eurovision 2021?
Now that she’s had a few days to let it all sink in, Alicja has expressed her will to go to Eurovision in 2021 on her Instagram account.
“As you know, this year’s Eurovision Song Contest has been cancelled. The reason, of course, is the unfortunate coronavirus”, she opened. “Of course, this information, albeit expected, made me very sad. Together with [my producers], I put a lot of heart and work into the preparation of the song”.
“Eurovision will take place on a new date, and we can only hope that we will be the same group of participants who were to participate in this year’s edition. Everyone will be in good health and with even greater passion and willingness will present their songs to the world and it will be a real festival of music!”
She signed off with on an empowering note. “For now, we stay at home. And as soon as the virus gives us peace, we come back with doubled strength”. In a comment, she replied to user @dziewiton, saying: “I would be thrilled if I could participate in [Eurovision 2021] and represent Poland!”
This isn’t a confirmation. But hopefully Poland’s TVP is taking note.

Yes, she will..and these exams sometimes require a lot of preparation…
I wouldn’t be surprised if Roxie will be chosen for ESC 2021, as in the beginning of January next year she turns 16, and since around 2019 there were some comments among fans that it wouldn’t be surprising if TVP decides to choose this girl in 2021…

Let’s be real: I think TVP really wanted her to win the NF in the first place, given her clout and the JESC-winning team of songwriters she was working with. I doubt they’d turn down the opportunity to send her again.
It would be a great loss for the contest if Poland doesn’t keep her as its representative. I really hope to see her next year. Fingers crossed!

I disagree with the majority of comments here. Empires is a very powerful song and is in my personal top 10 of 2020. I still think that Alicja can make another great song with her talent.

I love “Empire”. One of few ESC songs I’m still listening to. So, yes, pleeeeeaaase!
I think TVP should give her a chance in 2021 but of course we need much better entry. I would even accept another ballad if Alicja feels good in this kind of song but not so heavy, archaic and overdramatic.

Would love to her back! But yeah she deserves a better song, “Empires” wasn’t bad, but her voice and her charisma has winning potential. I’d like a more modern ballad.

Yeah, if she’s going to come back next year, Alicja definitely deserves a better song that will highlight her voice better. In a way, this cancellation is a blessing in disguise–it gives some artists a second chance to create greater songs than they had for 2020.
