Russia in Eurovision 2020: Little Big “Uno”

Little Big were internally selected and announced as Russia’s representatives in early March, despite having been rumoured for some time. They were due to sing “Uno” at Eurovision 2020.

The pop-punk rave band from Saint Petersburg currently consists of Ilya Prusikin, Sonya Tayurskaya, Anton Lissov and Sergey Makarov. They’re known for their lively songs that fuse rave and punk styles with satire and humour.

Little Big started off back in 2013 with “Everyday I’m Drinking”. They’ve toured across much of Russia and Europe, and collected numerous nominations and awards. For example, they won the award for the most trashy music video twice at the Berlin Music Video Awards with “Big Dick” and “LollyBomb“.

Their song “Skibidi” went viral in 2018, amassing more than 360 million views on YouTube. It comes as no surprise then that their Eurovision 2020 entry “Uno” racked up more than 25 million views on Youtube within its first four days. At the time of writing, it’s on the verge of cracking 70 million views.

What do the “Uno” lyrics mean?

While the lyrics may not be complicated or deep, “Uno” provides a fun party moment — and that’s what all the song is about. However, verses like “It’s gonna take more than one margarita”, “I’m gonna leave after night only with ya” make clear that there’s more to come after the party…

Lines like “I got that yummy yummy” or “Can we be chummy chummy right after midnight?” leave little to imagination. “All you have to do is to be ready for some action now”.

The song is filled with a plethora of Spanish clichés. Of course, after the “margarita” comes a “señorita”. And then, “Uno, dos, cuatro”, but there’s no “tres”.

Maybe Sergey Lazarev’s placings in both 2016 and 2019 had something to do with it?

Text

It’s gonna take more than one margarita,
I’m gonna call you my sweet señorita,
I’m gonna leave after night only with ya,
All you have to do is to be ready for some action now

Don’t be a dummy, dummy,
I got that yummy, yummy,
Can we be chummy, chummy,
Right after midnight

Yeah you so charming, bunny
Yeah you so funny, honey
All you have to do is to be ready for some action now!

It’s a shame they didn’t get to perform this. I just recently discovered Little Big, and I love their imaginative videos that blend some real talent with humor, and cultural representation. In some ways they remind me of LMFAO, but they’re very much their own band. Uno, Hypnodancer, Skidibi, and Faradanza get stuck in my head regularly.

The reason why there is no “tres” is because if you were to open your palm and start be doing relative fingers (“Uno” being the pinkie etc), you would have one middle finger left ,,,,

I’m positive that if this was sent by a less known band and was from a smaller country, like Moldova or Czechia, it would’ve been ridiculed.

In fact you’re completely wrong at the moment you write that some people have bad tastes… people have different tastes, what they like is not your business. Some people only like “serious” songs with profound lyrics, others love fun songs. A lot of Eurofans can lisen to everything and they are the ones I love. The fact that we had winners like Conchita, Mans, Jamala, Salvador, Netta and Duncan L. on the last 6 years show that European are open minded when it comes to music! All of them had great song 😉 Conclusion: you’re not the god music, no… Read more »

Nope, but I can say that I took waaaay more pleasure to look and listen at Eleni setting the arena on fire. And I got goosebumps when Salvador sang. It’s possible to like both of them. Music is not only technique and quality, it’s a question of emotions (Salvador’s words). Joy is an emotion and I felt joy with Eleni. PS: I studied and played music for 17 years now (I began at 6 years old), I play saxophone and piano. I see when a song is “musically superior” but the technique will never replace the feelings, whatever these feelings… Read more »

I think it would be more appropriate to say that the song is about creating a fun party moment, not the lyrics themselves, but maybe that’s just me lol.

I think they deserve some praise, it actually takes quite a lot of skill to create something which is so throw-away, but yet something which would have been so popular.
