Germany in Eurovision 2020: Ben Dolic “Violent Thing”

Broadcaster NDR chose Ben Dolic through an internal selection. The process saw two sets of juries assess all the submitted songs. Ultimately, Ben and his song were presented as the country’s act during Unser Lied für Rotterdam. This was Germany’s first internal selection since 2009.

As part of the process, Ben had to attend a songwriting camp. He recorded songs with many with well-respected songwriters and producers in London. This is also where things kicked off for his song “Violent Thing”. There Ben met Borislav Milanov, Connor Martin, Dag Lundberg, Jimmy Thorén and Peter St James. Together, they wrote and produced “Violent Thing”.

What do the “Violent Thing” lyrics mean?

“Violent Thing” is a catchy pop song about falling in love. It describes a night at the club where a boy sees a girl with big brown eyes and is immediately hooked on her.

The boy sings of this instantaneous love. The feeling is all-consuming, and he lacks the necessary vocabulary to describe it.

But it’s not all happiness. There is what could be interpreted as a moment of melancholy when Ben sings “I’m working on love / I’m waiting on something I need”. But this little expression is well hidden in the pre-chorus, just as the music builds up to the dazzling chorus in which everything is funky and naughty.

At the song’s official launch, Ben told our Florian about his interpretation of the song’s message.

“I’ve been asked this question a lot… and it’s hard to explain because it is a pop song. It does have a meaning of love and you can’t really go deep into the meaning. What I get from this experience is that love always wins. Because nobody could deny, at least in the song lyrics, that couple, that love. So it’s really something that always wins”.

Speaking to broadcaster NDR, songwriter Borislav Milanov explains the “violent” in “Violent Thing”. This love is not the romantic cosy love. It’s a passion that can’t be described. It’s when you simply feel drawn to a human being. There’s no logic. There’s a kind of violence in that you can’t defend yourself against such emotions. You lose control.

”Violent Thing” lyrics — Ben Dolic (Germany ESC 2020)

Written and composed by: Borislav Milanov, Peter St. James, Dag Lundberg, Jimmy Thorén and Connor Martin.

The Symphonix International team — headed by Borislav Milanov — have been responsible for some of the most popular Eurovision songs of recent years. Text

Got that thing that I can’t deny
Killing me soft with the big brown eyes
Such a violent thing, would you let me know

Knocking me down like a domino, oh

You know that I’m right here, I’m working on love
I’m waiting on something I need
I think that you, you know
You know what I want
You got me on the edge of my seat

Oh, don’t tell your mama what you’re doing tonight
24 hours ago you got that look in your eyes
Don’t need your number, ’cause I know you’ll be there
Hoppin’ all night and the beat don’t lie, we’re crystal clear
‘Cause if I got you with me tonight
Feeling like I’m feeling tonight
Don’t tell your mama
Ooh, you’re such a violent thing
Ooh, you’re such a violent thing

Shootin’ high, we’re getting low
Guns and roses all alone, yeah
And I wanna hear what you gotta say
But you won’t give me no audio, oh

You know that I’m right here, I’m working on love
I’m waiting on something I need
I think that you, you know
You know what I want
You got me on the edge of my seat

Oh, don’t tell your mama what you’re doing tonight
24 hours ago you got that look in your eyes
Don’t need your number, ’cause I know you’ll be there
Hoppin’ all night and the beat don’t lie, we’re crystal clear
‘Cause if I got you with me tonight
Feeling like I’m feeling tonight
Don’t tell your mama
Ooh, you’re such a violent thing
Ooh

You know that I’m right here, I’m working on love
I’m waiting on something I need
I think that you, you know
You know what I want
You got me on the edge of my seat

Oh, don’t tell your mama what you’re doing tonight
24 hours ago you got that look in your eyes
Don’t need your number, ’cause I know you’ll be there
Hoppin’ all night and the beat don’t lie, we’re crystal clear
‘Cause if I got you with me tonight
Feeling like I’m feeling tonight
Don’t tell your mama
Ooh, you’re such a violent thing
Ooh, you’re such a violent thing

Don’t tell your mama
Ooh, you’re such a violent thing

My #1 this year. I think that he would’ve ended up like #6 or #7 with both juries and televote but thanks to very divided results between both (Australia and Malta high with the juries but not top 5 with televote and Russia, Lithuania or Azerbaijan high with the televote but not top 5 with the juries), he would’ve ended up top 5 (even #4 according to my own simulation, lol).

This song is underrated! The fandom realises that this is the best big five song, but they don’t realise how great it is compared to the others. Quality, radio-friendly entry. How has it not been in any music charts yet…?
