He’s the reigning Eurovision champion whose career has gone from strength to strength following his victory at the contest in 2019, with a European tour, follow-up single, high-profile public appearances and enduring devotion from his many international fans. Now, Dutch star Duncan Laurence continues to slay his way through the international music scene with the release of his debut EP Worlds On Fire and new single “Someone Else”.

Duncan Laurence replays past relationships in “Someone Else”

“Someone Else” is a contemporary indie-pop track that explores the emotions people go through when reminiscing about past relationships.

Duncan recorded his new single in Los Angeles with a team of renowned songwriters and producers, including Brett “Leland” McLaughlin and Bram Inscore. McLaughlin and Inscore have previously worked with global stars such as Troye Sivan, Selena Gomez, Icona Pop and Mayer Hawthorne.

Possibly inspired by his own personal experiences, Duncan Laurence commented underneath the lyric video of “Someone Else” that he thinks the story behind the song is something that many people can connect with:

“‘Someone Else’ is about the feeling you can get when you’re all by yourself and your head starts spinning and replaying memories of a previous relationship. The emotional roller coaster of constantly thinking of that one person you loved so deeply but who you can’t be with anymore.”

“I think it’s a feeling a lot of people go through right now. Where you normally find comfort and distraction in your daily life, these days you are confronted almost every minute with those thoughts: like breaking up with a loved one and going crazy at the thought they’ve maybe already moved on to someone else…”

Worlds On Fire – Duncan Laurence gets emotional in debut EP

“Someone Else” is taken from Laurence’s debut EP Worlds On Fire, which was also released this week. The record features five tracks in total, including his Eurovision winning song “Arcade” and sophomore single “Love Don’t Hate It”.

The EP also includes two other brand-new songs, “Beautiful” and “Yet”. These two tracks are both emotional guitar-driven ballads that will resonate with those who fell in love with the rawness of “Arcade”.

The Dutch Eurovision winner has been eagerly awaiting the release of the EP, teasing fans for the past few weeks.

In a message to his fans on Instagram upon it’s release, Duncan wrote: “It’s here! My first EP ever. Please let me know in a comment what you think of the songs: which one’s your fav? Which one will you dance to? Sing along to? Cry to? Smile to? I wanna know EVERYTHING and all the feels.”

Duncan Laurence – Worlds On Fire

Two weeks ago, Laurence celebrated another career high as “Arcade”passed 100 million streams on Spotify. The song joined a select few Eurovision songs in the 100 million + streams club on Spotify.

This marked the first time that two entries from the same contest reached the milestone, as Mahmood’s “Soldi” crossed the line last August.

Duncan has some of the best post-Eurovision winning songs. Just like Loreen. Both are the winners with the best songs after winning Eurovision in my opinion.

For me it’s Lena, all her albums after ESC were amazing. The last album Only Love was even critically acclaimed by German music press that previously gave her bad reviews. It’s an impressive album from start to finish.

This probably would have been part of the interval act/opening act on Saturday if ESC wasn’t cancelled.
Come back next year in Rotterdam please Duncan!

Honestly one of my favorite winners of the 10s alongside Loreen, Emelie de Forest and Lena.
