Eurovision 2020 may have been cancelled, but Eurofans still have something to look forward to this summer: Netflix’s forthcoming film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Will Ferrell kicked the hype train into overgear when he dropped the first song of the film’s soundtrack, “Volcano Man“, the week of Eurovision. Now past Eurovision winners including Alexander Rybak and Jamala have covered the track.

While the song is rather humorous in nature, Eurovision 2016 winner Jamala took it to an emotional place. With the accompaniment of a keyboard and an acoustic guitar, the Ukrainian delivered a soulful rendition of the piece. She also showed her memorable whispery high notes, reminding us once again of her immense talent. In the video, Jamala wears angel wings on her ears.
Alexander Rybak
Norway’s Eurovision 2009 winner Alexander Rybak also joined in on the fun. He has done these violin overlay versions before, but this one has us more hyped than usual. The Norwegian charmer played a violin layer on top of the track and gave it a true Eurovision feel.
He wrote: “Haha it had to be done. I’m sooo happy that two of my favorite film makers David Dobkin and Will Ferrell have made a Netflix movie about Eurovision! I’m sure it will be hilarious! Will will you be my friend Will will you Will?”
Orgel Joke
70-year-old Dutch internet sensation Orgel Joke also joined the party. She recorded an instrumental organ version of the song. She made it clear that Netflix had directly asked her to make the video, but also added that she’s an avid fan of ESC. Since Rybak tagged Netflix Nordic in his post, it makes sense that he may have been asked too. If this is a big pr plan, it’s executed rather well.
Netflix synopsis
The film is now being teased directly on the Netflix platform. You can press a button for the service to remind you once it’s out (on June the 26th). The film also has a new synopsis. It reads: “Two small-town singers chase their pop star dreams at a global music competition, where high stakes, scheming rivals and onstage mishaps test their bond.”
An earlier synopsis, which is still listed on IMDB, says: “When aspiring musicians Lars and Sigrit are given the opportunity to represent their country at the world’s biggest song competition, they finally have a chance to prove that any dream worth having is a dream worth fighting for.”

Jamala’s cover is so beautiful! Alexander is a virtuoso with his violin. I’m glad this song is catching on and I’m looking forward to the film.

This movie is a joke and it will be a major flop. It’s made to make fun of Eurovision, too bad the ESC fans can’t see the mocking. It’ll be a strong contender to the 2021 Razzie Awards, in multiple categories, you’ll see

This is why Alexander and Jamala are two of my favourite ever winners. They will do follow and add to all things Eurovision!
I haven’t come to 2009 yet, but I did rate 2016 again and 1944 is certainly one of the most beautiful songs there. Jamala really made a huge impression with that spectacular performance and her cover now just proves how great of a singer she is. And Alexander… he is SO charming and likable. I did like both of his ESC songs.
