In Lisbon, she performed wearing a huge mountainous dress. Now Estonian opera star Elina Nechayeva is returning to rocky terrain with her operatic take on “Volcano Man”, from the upcoming Netflix Eurovision movie.

In the film EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: The Story of Fire Saga, “Volcano Man” is performed by the Icelandic duo Fire Saga, played by Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams. But now Estonia’s Eurovision 2018 diva Elina Nechayeva has created an epic operatic cover.

In the elegant performance, Elina reminds listeners of the vocal talents that saw her earn an eighth-place finish with “La forza” at Eurovision 2018.

While some Eurovision stars have covered “Volcano Man” in their homes during lockdown, Elina has had the freedom to go outside. The video is set in a mountain-side terrain, which Elina explores while wearing a flowing lilac gown.

Her version of “Volcano Man” slows things down. She takes her time with the song and brings operatic flourishes to the song which has its origins as a synthpop Europop parody.

Eurovision stars cover “Volcano Man”

Elina joins a growing list of past Eurovision stars who have covered “Volcano Man”. Previously Eurovision 2009 winner Alexander Rybak performed along with the song on his violin, adding some energetic string style.

Eurovision 2016 winner Jamala also performed a cover. Accompanied by two musicians on a keyboard and acoustic guitar, she delivered a gentle, soulful version of song which showed off Jamala’s vocal talents.

Moldova’s Eurovision 2019 singer Anna Odobescu delivered a disco version of “Volcano Man”, showing off her power vocals along with a revved-up version of the song.

And most recently, Iceland’s Eurovision 2020 act Daði Freyr performed a synthpop version of the song from his home studio.

The trailer of EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: The Story of Fire Saga was released yesterday, giving Eurovision fans more of a taste of what the film will hold. As well as “Volcano Man”, several other songs can be heard in the trailer, exploring different styles from the Eurovision songbook.

I just love how you see a bunch of ESC fans whining and complaining about the movie and how Americans “ruined” Eurovision, but meanwhile a bunch of actual ESC contestants are just vibing and doing covers of the song and are having fun with this. Actual contestants who had Eurovision be a major part of their life can take a joke, so i don’t know why the fans can’t.

Kate should sing this now. Her angelic voice can floor me without using opera technique.
