The fans were craving it, and the queen finally delivered. Melodifestivalen 2020 fan favourite and the bookmakers’ bet Dotter has released the music video for her Melfest follow-up “Backfire”.

Dotter’s “Backfire” (Official Music Video)

“Backfire” stays true to the lyrical motif of “Bulletproof”, but the music video gives off a different feel. It also helps that the song is poppier and has more instrumental diversity to rely on. As always, Dotter stays true to her focus on visuals to help the track feel even more powerful.

Lyrically, “Backfire” is about how karma can be a b-word (Backfire? Bulletproof?). The song tells us that if you do something bad, you should expect the world to get you back for it. But in “Backfire” this idea is not so general. In particular, the song is about remembering to lend a hand when someone is in a bad place mentally.

The music video, directed by Dotter, as well as Keisha Von Arnold and Kristoffer Jansson, features a lot of choreography and strobing lights that help one imagine this on the Eurovision stage. The Sacha Jean-Baptiste choreography certainly assists this visualisation. Von Arnold also appears in the video as part of a dance troupe. She’s previously performed with Eurovision top-five finishers in both 2018 and 2019 — Eleni Foureira and Luca Hänni respectively.

The video’s colour palette ranges from light green to black with a touch of blue. That’s a contrast to Dotter’s extremely red Melfest 2020 performance, as well as the gold performance of “Cry” in 2018.

“Backfire” lyrics — Dotter

Don’t put me down
It’s gonna backfire
Don’t put me down

Stop pretend you’re in love with the summer
Oh I’ve seen how you dance in the rain
And I know what you’ve done to the others
Just to be lady crown sovereign
In the rain
Shake it all of in the rain
Maybe you should look back at the summer
Again, oh, uh

Sometimes I feel like I’m crossing the line
But you know I get hurt all the time
Shouldn’t feel like committing a crime
Gotta speak through my mind

Don’t put me down
It’s gonna backfire
Don’t put me down
I say it’s gonna hurt

Don’t put me down
Don’t put me down

Oh I put my own heart first

Don’t put me down
It’s gonna backfire

I was never afraid, to be honest
Easy living my life every day
I got hit by your lies like a rocket
Gotta leave it behind
Ease the pain, let it drain
Wash it all off, let it drain
Cause you couldn’t keep up what you’ve promised
Again, oh, uh

Sometimes I feel like I’m crossing the line
But you know I get hurt all the time
Shouldn’t feel like committing a crime
Gotta speak through my mind

Don’t put me down
It’s gonna backfire
Don’t put me down
I say it’s gonna hurt
Don’t put me down
Don’t put me down
Oh I put my own heart first
Don’t put me down
It’s gonna backfıre

It’s gonna backfire

It’s gonna backfire

It’s gonna backfire

I feel like I’m crossing the line
But you know I got hurt all the time
Shouldn’t feel like committing a crime
Got to speak through my mind

Don’t put me down
It’s gonna backfire
Don’t put me down
I Say it’s gonna hurt
Don’t put me down
Don’t put me down
Oh I put my own heart first

Don’t put me down
It’s gonna backfire

It’s gonna backfire

It’s gonna backfıre

It’s gonna backfire

It’s gonna backfıre

I don’t like this that much but she did just write a really, really good song for Hanna Ferm. I guess she’s just one of those that I prefer as a songwriter than a performer.
