On Friday it emerged that Tom Leeb won’t sing for France at Eurovision 2021, fuelling speculation about how broadcaster France 2 would choose their act for next year’s contest in Rotterdam. And on Saturday afternoon, during a call with Wiwibloggs, the country’s Head of Delegation gave us the answer.

Alexandra Redde-Amiel confirmed that France will not return to the Destination Eurovision format, which gave Eurofans Madame Monsieur and Bilal Hassani. Instead, it will use a new national selection format produced by the broadcaster, rather than by an outside studio as in years past.

France replaces Destination Eurovision with new national selection format

As Europe slowly loosens restrictions and charts a path forward from the pandemic, Alexandra said that she wants to rally “the Eurovision family”. France 2 is preparing to embark on a new journey for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, which will hopefully bring people together once again.

“After this tough time, we need to move forward, to feel good energy among the Eurovision family,” she told me on the phone from Paris. “France Télévisions is proud to announce a new national selection. It will not be Destination Eurovison but a brand new concept with the current project name Un Eurovision France. We have chosen to produce it internally with France TV Studio. It’s a way to spread the spirit of the Eurovision brand among our teams and channels all year long.”

Producing the show in-house, rather than through an outside company, is a significant point. It will allow France 2 to integrate it with the broadcaster’s other departments — across news, digital and more. This suggests more buzz and hype for the selection in the run-up to the show. And how many shows will there be, exactly?

“We will have one national event on primetime TV in an arena in a regional city of France as a finale for the selection. The public will get the power of choice. Regarding the jury, everything is still open now. But before all of that, we will make this selection live in various ways.”

So it seems that the public will definitely have a say. The jury element — or an in-studio panel as with Destination Eurovision — is less clear. But, as she says, “the game is very open.”

Are you excited to hear that France is returning to a national final format? Which elements from Destination Eurovision would you like to see included in their new format? Shout out your thoughts below!

This is the best news ever! I was so sad when Destination Eurovision didn’t return for 2020. But this sounds like they’re going to elevate the contest. While I do respect that they want to host the grand final outside Paris to spread the event through France, I think Arena 92 in France could stage a spectacular final, on par with Melodifestivalen. But I know they’ll be able to stage a spectacular show anywhere in France.

The last news are : it will talke place 3 or 4 months before the contest, january or february, the HOD want to make live eurovision in France during all the year (don’t know really what it means) and the more early the better, that’s why the submissions open in one week.

Please France select MAËLLE. The girl is so magnetic and has an outstanding voice. With a good sad/dramatic/powerful song (like l’Effet de masse) she could win it all

I’ve just looked to the past practise when they planned to hold Destination Eurovision. At nearly the same part of the year (the end of June) they opened the song submissions for DE 2018 and DE 2019.

Indeed this is a real good sign for what we may have in term of songs quality. For the first edition of DE in 2018, I remember the delegation received more than a thousand songs, and approximately the same for 2019, while this year, nobody knew until very end of October even what were the plans so this is understandable that singers, songwritters and music industry were not really receptive! Of course that led to what we all know, they choose The Best in Me among a hundred !!!! songs submitted. Compared to the previous years, it was yet clear… Read more »

I’m lacking to much information but at least we have a few and I prefer a NF, especially if they want the French to feel interested into the contest more. Happy information: – Whatever the name is (DE), an NF is an NF. I’m happy that there aren’t working with ITV Studio France. They’re flopping, every year The voice has lower ranking because there’s a fatigue with the program. It’s also not that we will not have some previous candidates from this program. -It’s written that it will be done in a region. I hope so much that it’s not… Read more »

Make it as quality as Destination Eurovision and ditch the covers for each artist and I’m sold. And make some room for the National Juries opinion and reflect it in the final result instead of International Jury making bad decisions as seen in 2019. Basically I hope France keeps up the song quality, ditch the useless covers, have room for all of the juries opinions and have a bunch of standout acts that would be stand out in Eurovision as well.

The thing is that nobody cares about Eurovision in France so Stade Pierre Mauroy or Accor Hotel Arena would be totally useless. Don’t expect a huge arena with 10 thousands of people in it. A small arena with 1000 or 2000 people would already be quite huge for an event like this in France. The most important is the songs and the stagings.

I really love Merci, but that year had a few similarly good songs, like Ok ou ko and Ciao. I have no idea whether any of them would bring France to top 10, as 2018 was really competitive. Still, I have a hunch that Ok ou ko would at least went better with the juries. Merci could have done the trick if their staging was better. France finally learned how to stage last year… but last year their song was merely okay. If they go in that direction with staging, but return to more complex entries, they might do good.

Hi Colin, I loved Emmy Lyiana and Malo in 2018, but I don’t think they would have scored better than Mercy Emmy had a song that would have been ignored by the public (the classic song everybody likes, nobody hates and nobody loves). Ciao was a bit unpredictable for me, could go either way, but certainly it was a big risk. I would say that Destination Eurovision… Read more »

Destination Eurovision was a pretty good national final. The format had its problems, but the most important was there: the quality of the entries. As Robin mentioned, I hope they keep using the same tactics from DE to find artists and songs. I just think they should settle down for it. Don’t want to read that 2 or 3 years from now they’ll be dropping it, or renaming it again.

Except DE was in Paris. A national event, live on TV, from a regional city, except for the Miss France contest, there are nothing !! I have no doubt that the arena will be full, peoples are happy when there are something important in their regions, even more if it’s on tv !! so no worry to have for that in my opinion.

Sadly i think my city, Montpellier will not be choosed, too big capacity (14.000 spectators) i think they will choose a city like Brest with a arena holding from 2.000 to 5.000 spectators.

I dont like how people here and on the eurofan bubble criticise this choice and already say it will be a failure. Personnally, the fact that the French NF will be held in a big Arena hypes me a lot. It will be so different than the 2014 NF who was held in a little studio. Here, you can potentially have a Melodifestivalen arena configuration or Fête de la Musique arena configuration, which means it can be a big show ! + a televote and jury, so the result can be better than Destination Eurovision

Are we really doubting that FiK won’t take place? LRT said it would keep “Pabandom is naujo” for 2021, after its overall success in terms of production. I can see Arilena Ara being internally chosen and FiK proceeding without it’s winner appearing on ESC. As with Sanremo, it’s a very old and esteemed festival in it’s own right and it hasn’t always been linked to ESC. We’ll see. My personal issue with one-artist NFs is usually the lack of variety and I also prefer multiple artist NFs. Take UMK 2018 and 2019 for example – All three songs were of the similar style, quality and genre, making me not care at all which one wins. Romania and Israel this year improved on that, but I’d still argue there were some issues. Eden’s three more fan-favorite songs were still not that dissimilar in genre and Roxen clearly had a preference which song to sing, which made it an obvious choice. Thankfully, voters picked-up on that, otherwise we could have… Read more »

I am always wondering how come everyone picks only since January and then we have a cluster in February and March. Out of 40+ countries, one would think at least some of them would use the September 1st rule by having their NF early, or at least release competing songs. Some of the internal choices might stick out better if they are released October or November. They’d have all the attention to themselves, instead of fans being all over the place. Very interesting points, Colin. Yes indeed. In my view, re: your words: the Eurovision season basically starts end of December the year prior with Albania. Some countries do release the name of the artist but that doesn’t do much. Then a bit of movement in January, then some NS in February and at least 5-7 NS in the last Saturday prior to EBU’s deadline. And then the usual suspects release their internally picked song very last minute. So the Eurovision season is about six months out of 12 – last half of December till half May with the contest takes… Read more »

I have some weird feeling the UK will bring back the national final, but different to the Eurovision: You Decide

The winner is already decided. It’s Tom Leeb. When you have such clueless people forcing the worst kind of song on you, guaranteed to make you place in the bottom five, you truly win by not going. Better to have an NF with the applicants selecting or writing their own songs. And please, forbid whoever selected the 2019 song from selecting any of the 2020 NF entries. I mean, it’d be almost certain they’d reject anything good.

I think you mean 2020/2021 rather than 2019/2020, unless you didn’t like Roi.

Indeed. I meant 2021 but also indeed, the 2019 one was the ultimate horror.

French there ! She said a few weeks ago that she understood the “this world, the importance of eurofans”. She started very bad with the choice of the song but then she formalized the acoustic revamp, then Tom not coming back, then the announcement of a brand new NF. Not everything is black and the new NF doesn’t sound very low-cost so we’ll have to wait and see but I just read other interviews and she seems very ambitous about the Eurovision brand and to wants to make it live “all year” so we’ll have to wait and see. The… Read more »

Yes, Alexandra seems really involve with the Eurovision sphere since her coming, and the way this new selection will move in region is a huge sign because this is what France TV already does for other various shows which take place each year and are always good productions, attracting the interest of people. So what we know so far is that no matter what, the 2021 French act will benefit from all of this, with more exposure, hype and interest. And the most important thing : that’s the public who will DECIDE at the end. Thank you Team France!!

Destination Eurovision was so good because of the quality of entries they got. The producers worked with record labels to get their hottest upcoming acts. Will the new national final take this approach? Or will we see something more like the candidates of the 2014 contest?

I’m also worried but the fact that it will take place in a big arena hypes me so much because DE missed that I think.

I just hope that it will include 10 songs maximum and good stagings ! And quality songs, of course but I’m not worried about that.

The hottest¿ Well, not always. I still remember Battista Acquaviva… She sang horrible and the staging was one of the worst I have ever seen.

Oh, Wiwibloggs is very early, they probably knew the news before and had to wait for publishing it because it has been formalized like 55 minutes ago. So we’re talking about national final in an big arena in a french city, why not ?! Destination Eurovision woud have gained a lot to be in an Arena like Norway does. The codename “Eurovision France” is bad, though, but it will likely be changed. It will probably have less contestants than DE and I’m happy about that. I prefer 7 or 8 possible top 10 songs, rather than 18 songs that go… Read more »

Yeah, choosing 18 acts from different styles, tastes, which sound quite professional seems hard, and almost unfeasible without external broadcasters/studios, etc. But I think that move has been done all because of the copyright issues from the broadcasters. Same happened in Germany with their “Unser Song für …” externalized productions. That might be the reason as well why all previous Destination Eurovision performances have been erased from YouTube. Bringing the production back to France TV is their only way to get the entire attention and responsibility on the entry, facing also its consequences if the results aren’t the desired ones.… Read more »

Well, it might not be Destination Eurovision in name, but it could still be on the same level for song quality. Better than another internal selection at least. Vive la France!

Really unsure as to why they decided to remove destination Eurovision in the first place. They were churning out very solid acts that just didn’t end up hitting the mark on the night. I was sure that they would stumble across a very good entry relatively soon, so I’m not sure why they seem to have lost faith in what they had. A national final either way seems to be a better option for France. J’espère qu’ils vont réussir l’année prochaine

I imagine the negative reaction to Tom Leeb’s song must have motivated France 2 to make this change. Also the fact that they want to host it in an arena makes me think that they’re trying to emulate Melodifestivalen.

lol, France will never be a ebu pet like sweden

also this puts france into a direction they should not go at all, with all their class they had in 70’s 80’s 90’s

Obviously it’s still super early but I’m so excited and happy for my country that we’re bringing back a national selection. Can’t wait ?
